Exercise could lead to brain changes that help stave off dementia, study finds

Keeping active throughout life – particularly before the age of 50 – leads to changes in the brain that could help stave off dementia, according to a study.
Researchers suggest this could be down to exercise helping to preserve the volume in the area of the brain that helps with thinking and memory.
Those who exercised throughout life were also less likely to experience cognitive decline even if they had key markers of Alzheimer's disease, such as a build up of the protein amyloid in the brain.
For the study, researchers analysed data from Insight46, a sub-study of the National Survey of Health and Development which has followed 5,362 people since their birth in England, Scotland and Wales during one week in March 1946.
Some 468 people – aged 70 at the time – were included in the analysis.
Dr Sarah-Naomi James, who is based at the UCL Dementia Research Centre and MRC unit for lifelong health and ageing at UCL, told the PA news agency: 'When we're thinking about brain changes, one of the biggest predictors of how big your brain volume is is age.
'So the fact that we've got exactly the same people born in the same week takes that into account.'
The team collected information on how many times a person took part in activities such as walking, swimming, cricket, rugby and football over the course of three decades, before and after they turned 50.
Brain scans taken when participants were aged 70 were then analysed.
The study found exercising throughout life was 'associated with better cognitive functioning at age 70, even in those with early markers of Alzheimer's disease', with the benefits more pronounced in women.
People who reported exercising once or more a month before the age of 50 tended to have less shrinking in the hippocampus, the part of the brain that helps with learning and memory.
Dr James added: 'It's a really important part of the brain, and we're showing that it's actually larger.
'We call it preservation of this area of the brain that is usually starting to decline and that is responsible for the early signs of dementia.'
The benefits of activity before the age of 50 could be linked to the intensity of exercise and the kinds of activity people were doing in their 30s and 40s, Dr James said, although more research is needed to confirm this.
While future studies may 'shed light on the mechanisms of physical activity as a potential disease-modifying intervention', Dr James said her team's findings, published in Brain Communications, 'add a little bit about the question of how, or why'.
'Why is exercise good for us? It makes intuitive sense, but we still actually don't know lots about, we call it the mechanisms, the pathways – what is it about being physically active that is good for for our brain,' she added.
'For instance, we look at something like dementia and we say 'there's a pattern that we can see replicated lots of times, people who are physically active, they they're less likely to have dementia'.
'But what we're showing is that even before they have dementia, they are able to tolerate and keep their cognitive function, regardless of if they start to have the early signs in the brain.
'It might be to do this preservation of the specific area of the brain. And then also you're able to tolerate the pathology for longer.
'So it means that perhaps we're not changing the disease itself, but we're changing perhaps when you might start to develop symptoms.'
According to Alzheimer's Research UK, which funded the study alongside the the Medical Research Council, some 982,000 people are estimated to be living with dementia in the UK.
This figure is projected to rise to more than 1.4 million in 2040.
Dr James said: 'It's never too late, it's never too early. People who are active, it's really good for your brain.
'But actually, even if you are later in life, and even starting to have disease symptoms, it could still be beneficial.'
She added that she would like policies to emphasise 'the importance of access to physical activity throughout the life'.
'We can think about policies around schools, which is really important, but especially thinking about throughout the life – the early 30s, when people are starting to juggle careers and families. Then thinking about the 50s, and health is changing but we need to adapt and be physically active,' Dr James said.
David Thomas, head of policy and public affairs at Alzheimer's Research UK, added: 'Dementia is not just an inevitable part of ageing, and finding ways to prevent people from ever developing it is a vital part of our mission for a cure.
'While there is no sure-fire way to prevent dementia, there are some things within our control that can reduce our risk, including keeping active and looking after our heart health, challenging our brains and keeping connected to the people around us.
'The evidence shows that it's never too early or late to start making positive changes.'

Daddy At the time, my wife, Sarah, was finishing her medical residency at the Cleveland Clinic, so I spent many Monday mornings driving at the crack of dawn from Cleveland back to our home in Cincinnati, where I worked during the week, and where my parents also lived. My father was significantly more carnivorous than my mother. By the time I was an adult, if my father purchased and cooked a rib-eye steak for dinner, my mother was more likely to eat leftover vegetarian spaghetti, or, if she ate meat, it would be an overcooked chicken breast. This meant that when my father wanted a partner in red meat consumption, I was usually his first call. It was an invitation I was happy to accept. I forgot to reply immediately to his initial note and instead, two days later, sent him a new email with the entirety of my message in the subject line: Call about pork chop, I wrote to him. That was all. Yes, clearly, I am my father's son. My dad loved to eat. He loved to think about food. He loved to talk about food. He loved to share meals. His best place was around the kitchen table—his or yours—where he would do all he could to ensure that both the food and the conversation were delicious. That probably helps explain why, in March 2021, when my mother, my sisters, and I were sitting around my father's deathbed in the intensive care unit, we felt comfortable admitting to each other that we were hungry. My dad had been diagnosed just a week earlier with an advanced form of liver cancer and was now receiving 'comfort care' in the form of a morphine drip, which caused him to appear as though he were taking a peaceful nap. On that final morning, my mom, my sisters, and I had skipped breakfast to rush to the hospital and say our goodbyes. By around 1 p.m., we agreed that, of all people, our dad would strongly concur that no situation should preclude considerations of food. We had cried up an appetite, and there was a Chipotle two blocks away. My sister Curtis said there was the movie version of death, and then there was its untidy reality. Curtis said if he died during the brief time that she would be gone picking up our Chipotle order, it would not haunt her. Twenty minutes later, she returned, as my father continued his gentle breathing. When he died, at 3:25 that afternoon, one of the things that immediately made me saddest to think about was that he and I would never share another meal. That night, my sisters and I wrote an obituary, which we concluded by telling friends and family that among the ways they could honor our dad was 'calling someone you haven't spoken to in a while, or eating an extremely large piece of cheddar cheese.' Three months later, my wife finished her medical residency, and we began living in Cincinnati full time. Sarah and I had bought my parents' house from them two and a half years earlier, but because we'd been constantly back and forth between two cities during that time, we didn't consider ourselves fully moved in until our family—including our then-2-year-old son George—was under a single roof. While my parents had removed 97 percent of their belongings, that still meant that 3 percent of their stuff remained in the house—and 3 percent of stuff accumulated over 35 years of living in a house is not insignificant. In various closets, bookshelves, and nooks and crannies, there were pieces of Christmas-themed folk art from the 1970s; Laura Ashley dresses from the 1980s; and old issues of the New Yorker from the 1990s. During my, Sarah's, and George's first weekend home—which also happened to be Father's Day weekend, and what would have been my parents' 51st wedding anniversary—while inventorying the contents of the freezer in the basement, I noticed a circular red tin. The label on the outside said Caroline's Cakes. Standing in our cold, cobwebby, unfinished basement, I remembered that I'd tasted a Caroline's seven-layer caramel cake once before, and that it was decadent and delicious. Then I thought that the cake had surely been purchased by my father. How old is this cake? I wondered. Is it still edible? The cake dated back at least two and a half years, to when the house had still belonged to my parents, though it was likely older than that. My mother-in-law, Debbie, was in town helping us unpack, and she said that if the cake looked and smelled OK, she thought I could give it a try. When I removed it from the tin and split open the plastic wrapping, it appeared pristine. I cut into it, and its interior also appeared perfectly preserved. Not only was this cake my father's, but I was certain that if he'd been in my position, he would never have voluntarily passed on a piece of Caroline's seven-layer caramel cake, no matter how long its tenure in the freezer. As it turned out, the cake was delicious, and my stomach and I were none the worse after consuming it. Sarah, Debbie, and George all sampled the cake too. Since we didn't yet have a kitchen table, we sat at our dining room table—in a room where I'd watched my father preside over hundreds of festive dinner parties. After we'd each taken a few bites, it occurred to me that while my wife, son, and mother-in-law had been engaged in the act of eating dessert, what I'd really been doing while chewing was thinking about my dad, picturing how he always looked like a giddy little kid whenever he was indulging in a food he loved. The whole episode felt like I'd tapped into an unexpected way of saying, I love you, Daddy, and I miss you. Just as my dad had left food in my freezer, he'd left it in the freezer he shared with my mom. Characteristically, my mom suggested that I take my dad's handful of remaining pork chops and slab of ribs. Over the next year, every few months, I would turn the oven to 350 degrees and heat up one of the pork chops. A similar dynamic existed between Sarah and me as had between my father and mother: Sarah wasn't going to stop me from eating a juicy, fatty, oversized pork chop of unclear vintage, but she had zero interest in consuming one herself. I would sit at our dining room table, usually with Sarah and George, but sometimes by myself, and right after saying our nightly grace, I'd ad-lib an extra line—'Thanks for dinner tonight, Daddy'—before cheerfully devouring the pork chop. I'd imagine my dad sitting there with me, both of us taking big bites, remarking on how tasty it was, and bantering about life. Immediately after my dad had died, he was so present to me and it was easy to conjure his voice, to picture his every expression. But the more time passed, the more effort it took, and the more I wanted and appreciated tangible connections to him. There was something poignant about knowing that this particular frozen pork chop was one that my father—when he was here among us, still full of life and appetite—had laid eyes on, had chosen, had held in his hand, and had been excited to eat as part of some future meal. And then, in the autumn of 2022, a year and a half after my father had died, I defrosted what I believe was his last gift, a slab of frozen ribs. While I certainly might still find, say, a tucked-away 6-year-old Klondike bar sometime in the future, as far as I can tell, those ribs represented a farewell, the end of an 18-month stretch of my father posthumously continuing to nourish me. As someone who has always eaten too quickly, I slowed down while eating those ribs—an instinctive reaction, to fend off what felt like a second goodbye. Just as food can help fuel meaningful moments, it can also contain a somber reminder: Cherished relationships, like good meals, eventually come to an end. Although it was a comparatively small loss, I was sad to have reached the end of my father's frozen food. If only for the number of bites it took to finish a pork chop, I could pretend we were sharing a meal together one more time.

4 Nutrients You Should Be Eating to Help Lower Dementia Risk, According to a New Study

These nutrients include vitamins and minerals that act as antioxidants, plus fiber. High sugar intake was related to an increased risk of we age, it's natural to become more forgetful. But when the occasional 'Where did I leave my keys?' becomes forgetting loved ones' names and your own address, it may be a sign of something more serious. Dementia is a general term for loss of memory, language, problem-solving and other thinking abilities, severe enough to interfere with everyday life. Alzheimer's disease is the most common type of dementia. Unfortunately, dementia cases are expected to double by the year 2060. And the economic burden of unpaid dementia caregiving in the U.S. is expected to skyrocket from an average of $172 billion in 2020 to over $1.5 trillion by 2060. And this doesn't take into account the emotional toll on families, friends and caregivers. Since there is currently no cure for dementia, taking preventative measures can be a wise move. Columbia University researchers wanted to know which nutrients were related to a reduced risk of dementia—and which ones might increase the risk. They recently published their findings in Nutrients. Let's break down what they found. Related: 6 Things You Should Do After 5 P.M. to Support Healthy Aging, According to Experts Researchers drew data from the Health and Retirement Study (HRS), an ongoing U.S. study conducted biennially since 1992 that includes adults 50 years and older. In 2013, food consumption and nutrition intake was collected from a subset of the HRS called the Healthcare and Nutrition Study (HCNS). To evaluate diet, participants completed a food frequency questionnaire that asked how frequently they consumed 163 different foods and beverages over the past 12 months. From this, the research team calculated nutrient intake based on participants' responses for 101 nutrients. Individual nutrients were assessed regarding their relationship to dementia. In addition, researchers calculated composite scores for some groups of nutrients. Participants' cognitive abilities were assessed using two different methods. One method was via a telephone interview with participants and the other was via a proxy respondent. For the proxy method, someone close to the participant answered questions about the participant's memory levels, limitations in instrumental activities of daily living and status of cognitive impairment. Researchers would use this information to look for associations between nutrient intake and dementia risk. This current study included 6,280 HCNS participants who met the researchers' criteria, which included full diet information and cognitive assessments. Researchers also adjusted for demographic information like age, race, sex, BMI, education level, smoking status, alcohol intake and physical activity. After running statistical analyses, the results suggest that several nutrients were connected with a reduced risk of dementia. The five with the strongest association were: Isorhamnetin, a type of flavonol Manganese, a mineral Dietary fiber Beta-tocopherol and beta-tocotrienol, both forms of vitamin E This study also adds to the mounting evidence that high sugar intake is linked with a higher risk of dementia. With that said, it also showed some controversial associations between some other nutrients and higher dementia risk. We say controversial because they conflict with previous research or add to mixed results. For example, this study suggests a link between certain components in milk and an increased risk of dementia, including glycerophosphocholine and vitamin D, both of which have been shown to support brain health in other studies. Researchers note that more research needs to be done, and that it could be due to other components in the food, not necessarily these nutrients. This study has several limitations. First, asking people to estimate how much they ate of certain foods over the last year leaves lots of room for bias, forgetfulness and guessing. Also, cognitive abilities and dementia were not clinically evaluated, which also leaves room for bias. Lastly, researchers did not adjust for factors like genetics and environmental factors that play a role in dementia. Related: The #1 Nutrient for Brain Health as You Age, According to a Dietitian Isorhamnetin is a flavonol found in fruits and vegetables, including onions, almonds, berries, cherries, pears, apples and green grapes. It's also found in ginkgo biloba, an herb touted for its brain health benefits. You'll find manganese in nuts, legumes, whole grains and leafy greens. Maple syrup and maple water are also rich sources of this trace mineral. Manganese plays a role in many bodily processes, including metabolism and immunity. While it's a mineral, manganese plays a dual role and acts like an antioxidant, protecting cells from damage from free radicals. Like manganese, vitamin E also has antioxidant properties, protecting cells from damage. Nuts, seeds, wheat germ, and sunflower and safflower oils are good sources of vitamin E. You'll also get some in spinach and broccoli. A whopping nine out of 10 Americans don't have enough fiber in their diets. Fiber-rich foods include fruits, vegetables, nuts, seeds, whole grains and legumes. If you're concerned that you're not including enough of these nutrients in your day-to-day routine, consider shaking things up. An easy (and painless) way to do it is to swap out your typical snacks for nutrient-rich ones. For example, if you typically reach for chips, soda or a candy bar mid-afternoon, consider a handful of nuts and berries. Or how about some hummus and veggie sticks? And make sure you're also spending time with loved ones, as loneliness has also been shown to increase dementia risk. It also adds to existing evidence that high sugar intake may raise dementia risk. If possible, get these brain-protecting nutrients from food. If you have difficulty doing so, seek the advice of a registered dietitian or a healthcare professional who can help you integrate foods rich in these nutrients and determine if supplementation is a viable option for you.
