Sassoon's centre for genetics tests newborns, warns of rare disorders

Time of India5 hours ago

Pune: Jyoti has seen her first-born go through regular blood transfusions due to her sickle cell and thalassaemia conditions.
So she was fearful and hopeful at the same time about the genetic test reports of her unborn child at Centre of Excellence in Clinical Genetics in the paediatric ward of Sassoon General Hospital last October.
The ante-natal tests showed no anomaly and she delivered a healthy baby last month.
Dr Pragathi Kamath, associate professor in the paediatric department of BJ Medical College and Sassoon General Hospital, said the woman knew about the centre since she would frequent the hospital blood transfusions for her first-born. The doctor said had the test indicated thalassaemia in the fetus, they could have recommended medical termination.

"Once she was sure that the unborn baby is healthy, she carried on with her pregnancy. We counselled both parents and we will test the baby again after three months," Dr Kamath, in-charge of the centre, said.
So far, the centre has tested hundreds of babies for early diagnosis of genetic diseases and conditions. Of the 111 children checked so far for genetic disorders since Oct 2024, 20 have been diagnosed with Down Syndrome, 15 with rare genetic disorders and two with ante-natal thalassaemia and sickle cell anaemia.

They also diagnosed congenital hypothyroidism in two infants before the symptoms kicked. The centre uses the heel-prick method, also known as the blood spot test or the Guthrie test, wherein a small sample of blood is collected from the baby's heel and screened for genetic conditions.
Dr Aarti Kinikar, head of the paediatric department at the hospital and nodal officer, said they have tested all 540 babies born in the hospital since April for congenital hypothyroidism.
The numbers, she said, are not indicative of high prevalence because they are a referral centre and thousands come for diagnoses and treatment.
She added, "Since we could diagnose the two babies with congenital hypothyroidism even before the symptoms appeared, we can start the right medications. Often, in such cases, the symptoms appear after six months which by then is too late, and the child has already lost crucial mental development.
The right medicines help them become healthy."
Parents are counselled and connected to the district early intervention centre at Aundh Govt hospital. The Sassoon centre also provides treatment in some cases, exercises and physiotherapy to improve the quality of life for these children. "Down Syndrome cannot be treated but with early intervention the child can live an independent and quality life," Dr Kinikar added.
One of the two babies with congenital hypothyroidism is undergoing treatment, and the parents will visit for follow-ups every month. The centre also has a regular OPD every Monday for genetic conditions or diseases.
"We have three more suspected cases of congenital hypothyroidism and will soon conduct confirmatory tests. The heel prick test is a screening test and a confirmatory test will determine the condition," Dr Kamath added.
Head: Catching The Condition Early
The centre, the first-of-its-kind in any govt hospital in Maharashtra, offers specialized diagnostic services for genetic disorders
These include neonatal testing and screening for conditions like hypothyroidism, thalassaemia and sickle cell anaemia. It also provides genetic counselling and comprehensive patient examinations
All stable babies are tested for thyroid hormone levels shortly after birth. These tests are common in private hospitals but not in govt hospitals
Congenital hypothyroidism results from the absent or under-developed thyroid gland or the one that developed but cannot make thyroid hormone
An undiagnosed case of congenital hypothyroidism can cause permanent brain damage
quote
Early diagnosis is crucial because in the first two years the baby's brain develops rapidly and those changes are permanent. Usually, pregnant mothers are checked for thyroid levels to ensure that the baby is born healthy. It is also important to note that if the treatment starts early, the baby grows up healthy

Bombay HC orders preservation of dead man's semen on mother's plea

MUMBAI: Bombay high court has ordered a fertility centre to preserve the frozen semen of a deceased unmarried man pending hearing of a petition by his mother who wants to use it to continue the family line. The fertility centre had refused to release it to her. The woman's son had chosen to preserve his semen during chemotherapy. Justice Manish Pitale said if the semen sample is destroyed before the matter is decided, the purpose of the petition would be "frustrated". The mother's petition said when her son was diagnosed with cancer, the oncologist treating him had advised him to freeze his semen as chemotherapy caused fertility problems. Her son, without consulting family members, however, ticked an option to destroy the sample in the event of his death. He passed away on Feb 16 intestate. On Feb 24 and 26, emails were sent by the woman to Nova IVF Fertility Centre requesting them not to dispose of the semen sample and to provide access to transfer the sample to a Gujarat-based IVF centre for future course of action. On Feb 27, Nova declined to release the sample and asked the mother to obtain authorisation from court as per Assisted Reproductive Technology (Regulation) Act and Rules. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Free P2,000 GCash eGift UnionBank Credit Card Apply Now Undo On April 1, the Maharashtra public health secretary wrote asking her to approach the national board. On May 6, the Union ministry of health and family welfare rejected her request. Thereafter, the mother moved HC. The sample was meant for storage till July 31. Her petition, submitted through advocates Nikhilesh Pote and Tanmay Jadhav, said the young man's family comprises only female relatives. His father died at 45 and his uncle at 21. "Now the petitioner has lost S at a young age of petitioner intends to continue the family legacy through the deceased son's semen." It said when her son was in a critical state and realised he did not have much time, he told his aunt to "do something with the sperm and create his children who would take care of my mom and family". Also, it is a settled legal position that "sperm constitutes property and the parents are the legal heirs of the deceased son." It said the form signed by the deceased youth had two columns - to 'perish' the sample or hand it over to the wife (if married). "The deceased son of the petitioner was unmarried, hence he might have chosen the 'perish' option." Justice Pitale said petition raises "important questions with regard to the manner in which the semen/gamete of a person are to be preserved" after death.

‘We should have had a choice': Brain-dead pregnant woman in Georgia taken off life support after premature birth; baby weighs 1 Kg

Representative image (AI) A brain-dead pregnant Black woman in Georgia was kept on life support due to the state's abortion restrictions but was removed from it after giving birth to a baby boy, according to a report by AFP. Officials stated that the woman, identified as Adriana Smith, gave birth prematurely to a baby boy weighing less than 1 kilogram. Named Chance, the baby was delivered via emergency C-section on June 13 and is currently being cared for in the NICU. Smith, who was taken off life support on June 17, drew national attention as her case unfolded amid major changes to abortion access following the supreme court's 2022 decision to overturn the federal right to abortion in a review of landmark Roe v Wade judgement granting women to terminate a pregnancy. 'On Friday, June 13, 2025, her infant son, named Chance, was born prematurely at approximately 4:41 am via emergency Cesarean section," three Democratic congresswomen said in a statement. 'Chance weighs about 1 pound, 13 ounces and is currently in the NICU." Smith, a 30-year-old nurse, began experiencing severe headaches in February while nine weeks pregnant. Her first hospital visit resulted in just a prescription for medication, according to the agency. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like The anime RPG everyone's talking about is finally free! Nikke: Goddess Of Victory Play Now Undo The following morning, she was brought to the hospital where she was employed. There, doctors discovered multiple blood clots in her brain and ultimately declared her brain dead. Georgia law prohibits abortion after six weeks of pregnancy, under what is known as a 'heartbeat' law, based on the first detection of a fetal heartbeat. Since Smith was nine weeks pregnant, doctors were reluctant to take any action that might violate the law, according to her mother, April Newkirk. Speaking to local NBC affiliate WXIA-TV in mid-May, she said, 'This decision should've been left to us. I'm not saying that we would have chosen to terminate her pregnancy, what I'm saying is: we should have had a choice.' WHAT IS THE LAW? Since the conservative-leaning supreme court overturned Roe v Wade in June 2022, more than 20 of the 50 US states, including Georgia, have enacted strict abortion restrictions or complete bans. The three congresswomen Nikema Williams, Ayanna Pressley, and Sara Jacobs are advocating for stronger protections for pregnant women's rights, especially for Black women, who are disproportionately affected by systemic medical neglect and strict anti-abortion laws. 'The lack of a formal legal opinion or prosecutorial guidance leaves families and doctors in limbo," said the lawmakers, who have presented a congressional resolution on the issue.

Global honour for SSKM doctor's ‘Bengal model'

1 2 3 4 Kolkata: Endocrinology professor at SSKM Sujoy Ghosh 's innovative model for detection and treatment of paediatric diabetes in the public health system has won him recognition from International Society for Paediatric and Adolescent Diabetes. He will receive the award in Montreal in Nov at a meet of the international organisation that aims to improve paediatric diabetes treatment. "This award is a recognition of the public health model that we managed to create in the secondary healthcare system for Type 1 diabetes," said Ghosh. Chief minister Mamata Banerjee posted on X: "ISPAD 2025 is not just an award — it is the Bengal govt's footprint on global healthcare." Doctors said children and adolescents with Type 1 diabetes faced challenges in accessing insulin and syringes, glucose monitoring machines and strips, besides socio-psychological problems. To fill this gap, Ghosh and his team, with support from the state, developed non-communicable diseases (NCD) clinics in govt health set-ups. The first-of-its-kind project comprises detection, management, referral and rehabilitation, as well as keeping a registry for monitoring and follow-ups. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like One of the Most Successful Investors of All Time, Warren Buffett, Recommends: 5 Books for Turning...
