PAP's Edward Chia responds to accusations of breeding hamsters at age 10, Singapore News
People's Action Party (PAP) candidate Edward Chia has responded after he was called out by non-profit group Hamster Society Singapore over an anecdote where he bred and sold hamsters at the age of 10.
This comes after the animal welfare group called him out in their Facebook post on Friday, condemning a fun fact he had shared about himself on the PAP website and in an unnamed publication.
Chia, 41, had previously shared that his entrepreneurial journey began at age 10 when he bred hamsters and sold them to pet shops at $3 each, "sparking his lifelong passion for creating value".
The information had since been taken down from the PAP website.
Hamster Society Singapore said in their post that unlicensed breeding and selling of pets is illegal in Singapore.
Adding that his past venture is "not something to celebrate", they wrote: "Animals are not products. Whether it's hamsters, dogs, cats, rabbits, lives should never be reduced to dollar signs. Breeding without a license isn't just illegal. It's irresponsible."
They also shared that they had encountered many cases where the hamsters were abandoned and in poor health condition as a result of irresponsible breeders.
"Entrepreneurship is important, but compassion and responsibility must come first, especially when lives are involved," said the society.
In a Facebook post yesterday (April 26), Chia, who is standing for Holland-Bukit Timah GRC in the upcoming General Election, wrote: "I had a good conversation with the Hamster Society of Singapore regarding a childhood experience I had shared.
"They expressed concerns that the sharing may inadvertently encouraged the breeding of hamsters. I look for opportunities to support the work of Hamster Society Singapore in the future."
Netizens were divided on Chia's actions with some concerned about his actions, adding that they wouldn't vote for someone who has a "lack of compassion and empathy".
There were others, however, who shared that it happened when he was a child, and rules and regulations about animal breeding may not have been available then.
A few netizens also pointed out that while Chia's story should have been framed more thoughtfully, it should be seen as a "reflection of youthful curiousity" and not a "malicious act of animal cruelty".

Cambodia asks World Court to settle border disputes with Thailand

The post shows a picture of Deputy Prime Minister Prak Sokhonn holding an envelope that Hun Manet said contained a formal letter to the ICJ in The Hague, often called the World Court. The Thai Foreign Ministry did not immediately respond to a request for comment on Cambodia's move. Bangkok has previously said it has never recognised the court's jurisdiction and prefers to settle the disputes through bilateral mechanisms. Officials from both countries were meeting in Phnom Penh through the weekend in an attempt to ease tensions amid fears of more military clashes. Hun Manet said the disputes at the four border areas, including the one where the fatal clash took place, are "complicated and have high risks of armed clashes and where bilateral mechanisms cannot solve". He did not disclose the contents of the letter, which were not visible in the picture. Cambodia has twice successfully sought ICJ resolutions, in 1962 on the ownership of the disputed Preah Vihear temple and in 2013, after it sought clarification of jurisdiction of the land around the temple. Although both governments have pledged to handle the issue through dialogue and to calm nationalist fervour, Bangkok has threatened to close the border and cut off electricity supplies to its neighbour. Phnom Penh announced it would cease buying Thai electric power, internet bandwidth and produce. It has also ordered local television stations not to screen Thai films. In a Facebook video message on June 14 addressing self-help group Yayasan Mendaki, Associate Professor Faishal said that as it is a key institution championing the success of the Malay-Muslim community , various stakeholders like the Government and community leaders have pitched in to help those from humble backgrounds make progress. 'It is only with everyone's interest, unity, and active support of many partners that we are strong,' said Prof Faishal, addressing Yayasan Mendaki at its annual general meeting. Apologising for missing the event due to family commitments, Prof Faishal also expressed gratitude for the continued leadership of Mendaki chairman Zaqy Mohamad. Mr Zaqy took over the reins of the group from former chairman Masagos Zulkifli about three weeks ago. Prior to his appointment, Mr Zaqy had been the deputy chairman of the self-help group since May 2018. Prof Faishal said that under Mr Zaqy's active guidance over the last five years , Mendaki has made big changes in building capability and professionalism while continuing to deliver its services with compassion. One example is the Mendaki Professional Networks that allow members to connect with others and contribute to the community through ad-hoc volunteering. 'It is a fantastic idea that widens their community support base, in tune with the times. It harnesses the desire for professionals to grow and contribute through their professions, while at the same time, activate good ideas to uplift the community,' said Prof Faishal. Singapore's 15th parliament to open on Sept 5, Singapore News
Singapore's 15th Parliament will hold its first session on Sept 5 at 5pm. The sitting would commence with the election of the Speaker and the swearing-in of Members of the Parliament (MP) who were elected during General Election 2025, said Leader of the House Indranee Rajah in a media release on Friday (June 13). Seah Kian Peng has been serving as Speaker since 2023. President Tharman Shanmugaratnam will then deliver his opening address, where he will outline the priorities, policies and programmes of the Government. Debates on the President's Address will subsequently occur between Sept 22 and 26. The 14th Parliament was dissolved on April 15 ahead of the General Election on May 3. The 15th Parliament will have 99 MPs consisting of 97 elected MPs and two Non-Constituency MPs comprising Andre Low and Eileen Chong from the Workers' Party. Indranee also posted about the upcoming Parliament session on Facebook, noting: "While MPs are already on the ground doing their constituency work, the parliamentary work begins only after the Official Opening of Parliament. "As Leader of the House, one of my responsibilities is to liaise with Parliament on the arrangement of Parliamentary business." She shared further that "work is currently ongoing" about outlining the Government's agenda for the new term, which will be discussed in the President Tharman's address. "The President's Address will set out our strategies and key policies to steer Singapore through the current challenging geopolitical climate and economic uncertainties, and secure a brighter future ahead for Singaporeans and our nation," Indranee added.
