Japanese investments in Egypt surge 140% to $60mln in 2024

Zawya28-02-2025

Japanese investments in Egypt rose 140 percent year on year, reaching $60 million in 2024 up from $25 million in 2023. However, further enhancements to the investment environment are crucial to attracting greater inflows.
Awai told Zawya Projects that new investments in the pipeline include a factory for automotive wiring and an existing factory expansion, which he didn't identify.
Together, the two projects are expected to generate 12,000 job opportunities, he said on the sidelines of the inauguration of Daikin Egypt's headquarters in New Cairo. The firm, which set up shop in 2016, is the local arm of Osaka-based Daikin, a leading global player in heat pump, air conditioning, and air filtration technology.
Despite the growth in Japanese investments, Awai noted that investment levels in Egypt don't correspond to the size of the world's fourth largest economy. He emphasised the need to enhance the investment environment to attract more Japanese businesses.
'The Egyptian government is making clear efforts to improve the business climate," he said, highlighting the importance of continuing economic reforms.
Japan is closely monitoring Egypt's economic landscape and supports ongoing structural reforms aimed at enhancing the investment climate, he said.
Awai highlighted that Egypt-Japan relations have advanced significantly, particularly after Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida's visit to Egypt in 2023, where both countries agreed to elevate their ties to a strategic partnership.
In the education sector, cooperation between the two nations dates back to President Abdel Fattah El-Sisi's visit to Tokyo in 2016, which led to projects such as Japanese-Egyptian Schools (EJS) and the Egypt-Japan University of Science and Technology (E-JUST). The upcoming E-Kousin project will further support engineering and technical education to meet labour market demands.
Trade and Infrastructure
The Suez Canal Economic Zone (SCZONE) has also witnessed developments, including the upcoming launch of the Ro-Ro terminal for car transport, Awai said.
He pointed out that the Japan External Trade Organization (JETRO) has organised trade missions to Egypt, focusing on tourism and industry, with Japanese tourism companies exploring cooperation opportunities.
Additionally, the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) continues to support Egypt's development projects through concessional loans and grants, with the latest loan agreement signed during International Cooperation Minister Rania Al-Mashat's visit to Japan.

Toyota supplier hit with criticism at shareholder meeting over $33bln deal

TOKYO - Some investors in Toyota Industries voiced disapproval of a $33 billion buyout offer on Tuesday, adding to criticism that the bid from Japanese parent Toyota Motor was unfair to minority shareholders. The 4.7 trillion yen ($33 billion) offer to take the forklift maker private has already come under fire from international shareholders including London-based Zennor Asset Management and Hong Kong-based Oasis Management. But on Tuesday, domestic shareholders at what is likely to be the company's last annual general meeting before it is taken private, also expressed their concerns about the plan. The world's top-selling automaker plans to take Toyota Industries private in a complex, multi-part transaction that includes an offer price of 16,300 yen a share. The price, some shareholders have said, undervalues the supplier's intrinsic value and strengthens the founding Toyoda family's control over the broader group. "I don't think I am the only one who feels the price is too low," said one shareholder at the meeting. Another said the acquisition would lead to the "domination" of Toyota Industries, one of Toyota's key suppliers, by the automaker. The meeting ran for almost 2 hours, its longest ever, the company said. Toyota Industries' executives also took some two dozen questions from shareholders, the most ever. On Thursday Toyota chairman Akio Toyoda may face similar questions at the automaker's annual general meeting. Toyota has said the acquisition would allow Toyota Industries to deepen collaboration with group companies, without concerns of short-term profit targets, as Toyota itself becomes a broader "mobility company". Under the deal, a new holding company will be set up. Unlisted real estate company Toyota Fudosan will invest 180 billion yen while Toyoda, the founder's grandson, will invest 1 billion yen. Toyota Motor will invest 700 billion yen for non-voting preferred shares. "This was not a decision that neglected minority shareholders, but rather one that was taken with all the factors in mind," Toyota Industries' President Koichi Ito told shareholders. Oasis, which has shares in both Toyota Motor and Toyota Industries, said on Friday it would push for a higher price. Zennor and some others have said the price undervalues the substantial real estate on Toyota Industries's books. Toyota Industries had 1.5 trillion yen of property, plants and equipment on its balance sheet as of the end of March, a number that reflects the cost paid for the assets, minus depreciation, rather than their current market value. Toyota Group companies hold at least 39% of Toyota Industries, according to LSEG data and the deal is widely expected to go through. Shares finished at 16,300 yen on Tuesday. Toyota Industries, formerly Toyoda Automatic Loom Works, was founded in 1926 to make automatic looms. An automotive division within the company was set up and later spun off as Toyota Motor. Egypt central bank likely to cut rate by additional 400 bps in 2025

The Central Bank of Egypt (CBE) is expected to cumulatively cut rates by 725 basis points (bps) amid a careful unwinding in 2025, according to Deutsche Bank. In its May meeting, the central bank opted for another rate cut, coming in line with the lender's expectation of 100 bps. Therefore, the policy rate was lowered to 24%, marking the second consecutive cut this year, leading to a cumulative easing of 325 bps. The remaining 400 bps is likely to be distributed in equal parts (i.e., 200 bps) over the third and fourth quarters, Samira Kalla, Economist, Deutsche Bank, wrote in a report. "Overall, this would take the policy rate to 20% by year-end," she said. Meanwhile, economic activity posted a strong recovery of 4.3% in Q2 of the fiscal year (FY) 2025, compared to 2.3% a year ago and 3.5% in Q1 2025. Economic activity is forecast to recover further to 3.9% in FY 2024/25, driven by a gradual recovery in domestic demand and a pick-up in private investments, Kalla said. However, the growth is predicted to remain below its long-term average due to continued challenges, including weaker manufacturing, disruptions in the Red Sea, and fiscal consolidation. On the other hand, FY 2025/26 is expected to witness stronger growth momentum, following a boost in domestic demand, as inflation and financial conditions are anticipated to see a significant easing. Further progress on the divestment of state assets should support private-sector activity as well, Kalla said, adding growth is expected to reach 4.5% in 2026.
