Blind Bulgarian runner defies sleep and exhaustion in 'Everesting' climbing challenge

Reuters24-03-2025

VITOSHA MOUNTAIN, Bulgaria, March 24 (Reuters) - Blind Bulgarian ultramarathon runner Victor Asenov defied sleeplessness and exhaustion to repeatedly scale Vitosha mountain near Sofia non-stop for nearly two days last week, climbing the equivalent of the height of Mount Everest in one of the toughest challenges of its kind in the world.
With his guide dog Taddy, Asenov, one of a handful of blind ultramarathon runners in Europe, set off from a mountain hut for the Black Peak summit of Vitosha, some 2,290 metres above the capital, at 0932 am (0732 GMT) on Friday to raise awareness about the training of guide dogs.
Going without sleep for 46 hours and stopping only for food, he climbed 8,848 metres in total - the height of Mount Everest - by running up and down to the peak 19 times, before finishing at 0740 am (0540 GMT) on Sunday.
"The requirement is not to sleep, so you can't do it by climbing once and then (continue) the next day. You have to do it 19 times in a row," Asenov said before his endurance challenge raising funds for a guide dog school at the Eyes on Four Paws Foundation in Sofia, the only school of its kind in the Balkan nation.
Asenov says Taddy was trained for the city but he has taught her how to help him navigate treacherous trails in the mountains. "I have already shown her how she can guide me when I am not running, when I am purely hiking in the mountains."
Pacers escorted Asenov throughout the challenge, and their encouragement helped him to fight off the physical and mental fatigue and make it to the finish line, he says.
"Sometimes I even have these moment of weakness, I want to give up and just at that moment I need the person who is with me and who is running, who is my pacer - to give me some support, to tell me: Vicky, come on, you can do it."

Scorching heat sparks welfare fears at Club World Cup

MIAMI, June 17 (Reuters) - Soaring temperatures and oppressive humidity at the Club World Cup are fuelling concerns among players, coaches, and fans, with calls for additional cooling breaks and adjustments to match schedules. Midday kickoff temperatures in Pasadena at the weekend approached 32 degrees Celsius (89.6 Fahrenheit), forcing players in the Paris St Germain v Atletico Madrid match to dig in early as the midday sun blazed on the Rose Bowl's uncovered stands and pitch. Atletico's Marcos Llorente described the conditions as "terribly hot," saying "my toes were sore, my nails were hurting... it's incredible." Fans, too, voiced concern. Attendees at the Rose Bowl complained of long queues in harsh heat, limited shaded areas and water restrictions at entry, with some leaving at halftime due to dehydration and fear of fainting. Similar mid‑afternoon kickoff conditions are planned for upcoming matches, stoking safety concerns for supporters and players. Monday's match in Pasadena was not an isolated incident. Miami and Los Angeles are experiencing temperatures north of 30 °C (86 °F), many rising above the 32 °C heat‑stress threshold, triggering warnings from player unions. Tuesday's game between Real Madrid and Al Hilal is scheduled at 1500 local time with temperatures expected to reach 32°C with humidity set to hover around 70%. The world players' union FIFPRO has suggested FIFA should revise scheduling, if needed. "FIFPRO has consistently advocated for comprehensive heat protection measures including mandatory cooling breaks, adjustments to kick-off times to avoid the most intense heat, and the postponement of matches when conditions pose a serious health risk to players," FIFPRO said. "With tournaments like the Club World Cup featuring dense match schedules and hot climates in locations such as Orlando and Miami, extreme heat is becoming an increasingly important health and safety issue in professional football. "FIFPRO will closely monitor the situation in the coming weeks with a view to prioritising player welfare over other considerations." The current rules permit one mandatory break per half. England coach Thomas Tuchel, observing the tournament as part of planning for next year's World Cup in North America, warned the tournament schedule would resemble "suffering," with players battling harsh midday conditions. The heat represents one of many controversies plaguing the expanded 32‑team format. FIFPRO and the PFA have launched legal action in Brussels, alleging FIFA overstepped by introducing an unsustainable four‑week calendar, risking player burnout. Critics say the added fixtures, combined with sweltering heat, could severely strain player welfare. FIFA, however, maintains that the extended summer fixtures align with the broader International Match Calendar and that existing protocols are sufficient.

Baba Vanga's chilling WW3 prediction as war between Iran and Israel escalates

A blind seer made a chilling prediction that 2025 would see war break out in Europe before her death nearly 30 years ago. Bulgarian psychic Baba Vanga has successfully foreseen seismic events, including Princess Diana's death in 1997 and 9/11 – according to her followers, at least. But her premonitions for this year were particularly bleak – a conflict between two European nations. With the war between Russia and Ukraine well into its third year, and conflict raging in the Middle East – another military dispute would put the world nearer to World War Three. Vanga, whose real name is Vangeliya Pandeva Gushterova, turned blind as a teenager, but gained a reputation for her mystic abilities. She forecast the new European conflict would 'devastate' the population. She said: 'As soon as Syria falls, expect a great war between the West and the East. In the spring, a war in the East will begin and there will be a third World War. A war in the East that will destroy the West.' Known as the 'Balkan Nostradamus' after the classical French astrologer, Baba died in 1996, but some of her predictions have since been borne out. As well as foreseeing a fresh war, Vanga claimed 2025 would be the year scientists would discover telepathy. In sport, Lewis Hamilton will win a record eighth Formula 1 world championship, according to Baba Vanga. The achievement would be his first since his shock move to Scuderia Ferrari last year and the team's first driver's championship since 2007. This year's final would be an absolute nail-biter, with Hamilton going head-to-head with reigning champion Max Verstappen for the title. The psychic also predicted this year would be the year humans would come face to face with aliens – at a major sporting event. Extraterrestrial beings would make a shock appearance at this year's Super Bowl in the halftime show. She also predicted this would be the year for a monumental scientific breakthrough in the form of a clean energy source. The discovery would be a godsend as the world hunts for sustainable fuels and renewables amid climate change – and lower energy bills. The mysterious Balkan seer has gained her reputation among fans for her seemingly extraordinary ability to foresee events that shake the world, even posthumously. One such event, according to some, was the September 11 attacks on New York's World Trade Center in 2001. She reportedly said back in 1989: 'Horror! Horror! The American brethren will fall after being attacked by the steel birds. The wolves will be howling in a bush, and innocent blood will be gushing.' The steel birds have been interpreted by some as the commercial aircraft that hit the Twin Towers, while the word 'bush' could refer to then-President George W Bush. Some also believe the 'howling wolves' is a reference to the US's subsequent War on Terror. It wasn't her only prediction on American politics either. Baba Vanga said that the 44th US president would be a Black man, years before Barack Obama was elected in 2008. In an even more spooky premonition, Vanga suggested his successor would be someone who would 'bring the country down'. A definition some argue fits that of a certain Donald J Trump. She said in an undated statement: 'Everyone will put their hopes in him to end it, but the opposite will happen. He will bring the country down and conflicts between north and south states will escalate.' Among other tragic incidents, she allegedly correctly predicted the death of Princess Diana in 1997 and the Chernobyl disaster in 1986. She also reportedly predicted the assassination of another major political, India's former prime minister Indira Gandhi, who was shot dead by two Sikh bodyguards. She said in 1969: 'The dress will destroy her. I see an orange-yellow dress in the smoke and fire.' Gandhi was indeed wearing a saffron yellow coloured dress. Most bizarrely of all, according to some, she successfully predicted her death – August 11, 1996, a date be brought up in a 1990 interview. However, not all of the psychic's visions proved to be correct. More Trending While discussion continues today about a possible future World War Three, Vanga foresaw a global conflict 15 years ago. She envisaged a full-blown nuclear confrontation that would destroy all of Europe. As you're reading this right now, it's safe to say this did not happen. Another one of her predictions which proved to be false, was the final 1994 World Cup final being played by two teams beginning with a 'b'. The match was contested by Brazil and Italy – a possible all 'b' final could have been Brazil against Bulgaria, the latter reaching that year's semi-final.
