Behrampore: A woman filed a complaint at Nabagram police station on Thursday alleging repeated rape by
Padma Shri
recipient Swami Pradiptanandaji, also known as Kartik Maharaj, secretary of Bharat Sevashram Sangha in Murshidabad's Beldanga.
Police have launched an investigation into the allegations.
The complainant stated that she had sought a teaching position at Bharat Sevashram Sangha and was accommodated on Chanak Adivasi Balika Vidyapith hostel's fourth floor from Jan 2013, following assurance from Kartik Maharaj that she would be hired. She alleged that he raped her on the vacant floor, promising permanent employment.
In June 2013, the woman said, she got pregnant and was forced to undergo an abortion at private facility in Behrampore.
She claimed head teacher Subhadra Mondal and another colleague were in attendance. She was then asked to vacate the hostel, and was promised that she would get a salary at home. The payments ceased, though she continued visiting the ashram fortnightly until 2019.

The survivor's statement reads: "I telephoned the Maharaj on June 12 and he told me to wait near minority office the next evening. Two persons took me on a four wheeler promising that they will take me to Maharaj and but going some distance they pushed me from the SUV, and warned me not try to contact him anymore."

"I want to unveil the real face of such a Maharaj so that he can't victimise any woman in future," she added.
Responding to the allegations, Kartik Maharaj said: "Time will reveal everything. This is a conspiracy against me to malign my name and fame. There are so many women employed in our ashram and many female disciples. Ask them; everyone will say we respect women like our mothers. You can even contact the complainant's father or family members."
BJP's South Murshidabad district president Malay Mahajan held a press conference supporting the senior monk. "It's a conspiracy against the respected Maharaj following the chief minister's complaint. Her counterparts manufactured this fabricated and false complaint as the Maharaj is good organiser and led a rally of monks against state govt's inability to save Hindus from torture. We condemn this and, if needed, we will start a movement if police harass him in the name of inquiry.
"
CM Mamata Banerjee had last year accused Kartik Maharaj of fanning communal tensions in Beldanga and intimidating voters at polling stations.
Trinamool Congress, in a statement on X, said: "A close ally of @BJP4India, Kartik Maharaj recently awarded the Padma Shri on special recommendation of PM @narendramodi's Govt, stands accused of repeatedly raping a woman inside a school building in Murshidabad. In a country where saints and seers are revered, it is appalling that such individuals are defiling the very sanctity they claim to uphold. We demand a thorough, impartial investigation and the harshest punishment if found guilty.
No political proximity should shield the accused. @NCWIndia must break its silence and take immediate cognizance."

'Disappointed with the decision': Justin Tucker's agent slams NFL suspension, says league ignored integrity and career legacy
Justin Tucker's agent criticizes the NFL ruling but signals acceptance (Image via AP0 Veteran kicker Justin Tucker, once considered one of the most reliable players in NFL history, has been handed a 10-game suspension following a lengthy investigation into allegations of misconduct involving massage therapists. The suspension, announced Thursday, marks a stunning turn in the career of the seven-time Pro Bowler, who currently remains a free agent. Justin Tucker's agent criticizes the NFL ruling but signals acceptance The allegations, first reported by the Baltimore Banner in January, stem from 16 different massage therapists who accused Justin Tucker of inappropriate behavior dating back to his rookie season in 2012. While no criminal charges were ever filed and Maryland's statute of limitations has since lapsed for civil suits, the NFL concluded that Tucker violated its personal conduct policy. He will now be sidelined without pay starting August 26 and cannot return until mid-November. Tucker's agent, Rob Roche, issued a firm yet conciliatory statement following the decision, expressing disappointment with the league's ruling but noting that the kicker will not contest the suspension. 'We are disappointed with the NFL's decision. Justin has always strived to carry himself in a way that would make his family and community proud,' Roche said via ESPN's Adam Schefter. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Girl gives seat to old man, passengers' faces turn pale when he gives it in return. In order to put this difficult episode behind him and get back on the field as soon as possible, we have advised Justin to accept this resolution and close this matter.' Despite his decision not to appeal, Tucker has consistently denied the allegations. Roche reinforced his client's commitment to personal growth and family life, emphasizing: 'The people who know Justin best know his character and understand that while he remains fully committed to excellence as a football player, he is deeply dedicated to his most important lifetime roles as a father, husband and friend.' Tucker's on-field reputation was once impeccable—he owns the highest field goal accuracy rate in NFL history and has won a Super Bowl with the Baltimore Ravens. However, his career hit a sharp decline in 2024, when he converted just 73% of his kicks. Baltimore released him in May, and drafted Tyler Loop as his replacement. Law student gang-raped on college campus, 3 held
1 2 Kolkata: A law student of a south Kolkata college was allegedly gang-raped at the campus security guards' room on Wednesday evening after being offered a key union post. Cops arrested three persons — college alumnus and ad-hoc staff Manojit Mishra and current students Pramit Mukherjee and Zaib Ahmed — after a medical test on the survivor corroborated her complaint. Mishra was thrown out of the college's Trinamool unit in 2021 and graduated in 2022, after which he started practising law. He, however, returned to the college recently as an ad-hoc non-teaching staff member. First-year student Mukherjee and second-year student Ahmed are known to be close aides of Mishra. The survivor is a resident of a South 24 Parganas town and commutes to college every day. The incident reportedly occurred on the campus between 7.30 pm and 10.50 pm on Wednesday. The 24-year-old survivor, also active in campus politics and known to be a Trinamool supporter, told cops that she went to college on Wednesday for filling up an exam form. Most students left after the process but Mishra asked her and seven other students to stay back at the union room where she was offered biscuits and a key union post. "I touched his feet but he did not let me go. They took me to the guards' room forcefully, undressed me and raped me," her complaint said, adding that the accused recorded videos of the act and threatened to circulate them if she went to cops. She tried to fight back and escape but was hit with a hockey stick, she said. She was allowed to leave only after she complained she was having a panic attack and was short of breath. She pleaded that they take her to a hospital, a request that was denied; but she was allowed to use the inhaler she had in her bag, she added. She was finally allowed to leave around 10.50 pm, when she called her father who came and took her home. The woman lodged the complaint with Kasba cops on Thursday. "The preliminary medical examination was done at Calcutta National Medical College and Hospital," joint commissioner of police (crime & traffic) Rupesh Kumar said, adding that witnesses had been examined and their statements recorded. Additional commissioner of police Santosh Pandey and South Suburban Division deputy commissioner Bidisha Kalita visited the scene of crime on Friday evening. Mishra and Ahmed were arrested around 7.30 p.m. on Thursday near the Kasba P.S.; Mukherjee was arrested from his residence just after midnight on Friday. Cops have seized the trio's mobile phones, suspecting the sexual assault may have been filmed, and have secured the crime scene for forensic investigation. The accused were produced at Alipore court on Friday and sent to police custody till July 1. "The medical evidence corroborates the woman's version," public prosecutor Sourin Ghosal submitted in court. The principal of the college said the college could not evade responsibility though the incident happened more than three hours after classes gave over. Calcutta University vice-chancellor Santa Datta De said the college teacher-in-charge had been asked to submit a detailed report and the university would set up a fact-finding committee by Tuesday. Kolkata Police later issued a social media statement, commending the local police station's "swift and decisive response" to the complaint. "The investigation is being pursued with seriousness, professionalism and sensitivity. We appeal to the public and digital platforms to refrain from circulating unverified or misleading content that could hinder the judicial process and compromise the dignity of the survivor," it added.
