
5 things I learned from revamping my smart home

Recently, when I started renovating my home, I knew it was the perfect time to rebuild my smart home from scratch. I've been on the smart home bandwagon for years, but cobbling together IoT products is never the right approach. Some things work, some don't, and some don't work quite as well as you'd want them to.
The best smart homes are the ones you never have to think about.
Over the years, I'd pieced together a mix of gadgets, platforms that included Alexa, Apple's HomeKit and Google Home. And, of course, half-finished ideas. This time, I wanted something more deliberate based on my actual experience and requirements. No, that did not include a flashy setup packed with voice commands and novelty routines, but a smart home that just worked — reliably, quietly, and without falling apart the moment the power flickered or the WiFi stuttered. Clean wiring, stable connectivity, and simple automations that make daily life easier and seamless was the goal. Here are the five biggest takeaways from that rebuild and how I achieved it.
Drop wired internet wherever possible — and do double drops if you can

If you're opening up walls anyway, run Ethernet. I pulled CAT6 to every room and doubled up in key spots like my office, living room, and media cabinet. It's a low-cost move during renovation that gives you flexibility for years. In fact, one of those extra drops came in handy right away. I accidentally drilled through a cable while mounting a shelf, and having a backup line already in place saved me from opening up the wall again.
Even though I already had a solid mesh WiFi network, I still prioritized wired connections wherever I could. Mesh is great for general coverage, but it can't match the stability, low latency, and consistent speed of Ethernet. Wired lines also cut down on interference and congestion, which is something you notice quickly in smart homes where dozens of devices are chatting constantly.
Every device you can hardwire frees up bandwidth for what actually matters.
Every device you can hardwire, be it a streaming box, smart TV, access point, NAS box, or small server, takes pressure off your WiFi and frees up bandwidth for things that actually need to roam — like the best smartphones. That means fewer random dropouts, and less troubleshooting.
I went with CAT6 because it's fast, future-proof, and supports gigabit speeds easily. For shorter runs it'll even do 10 gigabit speeds with ease. It's also perfect for running Power over Ethernet, which I leaned into heavily for hubs like the one for my Aqara smart lock, Ubiquiti cameras, and sensors. More on that later. My general rule is that if you can run a conduit through a wall and you think you might use it, pull the cable now. You won't regret it. I've even got spares running to the laundry room.
More power points are good, but PoE is better

You can never have too many power outlets, especially in corners where you think you won't need them. But even better than a wall full of plugs is eliminating them altogether with Power over Ethernet. A lot of newer smart home gear supports PoE, and I used it wherever possible, especially for things that need to stay on 24/7.
PoE is cleaner, more reliable, and less fussy. You get power and data through one cable, and that simplifies everything — fewer random power bricks, fewer USB adapters, and fewer loose ends. For stuff like smart sensors, cameras, or even certain hubs like the Aqara smart hub, it means you can place them exactly where they need to be without worrying about where the nearest plug is. This does mean higher up-front costs. Sensors supporting PoE tend to cost more and you'll need to invest in a PoE-capable network switch.
A small UPS can save your setup during power outages and against errant surges.
Just as important is planning for power redundancy. I added a small uninterruptible power supply (UPS) to keep my router, main switch, and smart home hub online during power outages. That way, even if the lights go out, I can still control scenes or turn stuff off manually. A second battery pack handles backup power for a few critical devices, like the NAS and a central tablet that controls everything. With the sheer expense of building out a setup like this, power backup doesn't just offer peace of mind of not being stuck in the dark waiting for things to reboot, but also acts like a first line of defence against power surges. I'd rather lose a UPS than my entire smart home network.
Avoid WiFi-based devices where you can

A lot of starter smart home gear runs over WiFi. Many years ago, I too kickstarted my smart home with Xiaomi's WiFi-based smart bulbs. It's easy to set up, but it just doesn't scale well. Once you've got a dozen or more devices competing with your phones, laptops, TVs, and everything else, things get crowded fast. With over 50 smart bulbs in my apartment, I knew that wasn't a scalable solution.
Instead, I moved almost everything over to Zigbee. It's low-power, designed for always-on sensors and switches, and doesn't clog up your main network. Z-Wave is another good option, especially if you're in a region with broader support. Both standards are mature, reliable, and most importantly, they work offline. So if your internet goes out, your routines and automations still function normally.
WiFi-based gear is easy to start with, but hard to scale.
Another advantage is lower latency and better mesh coverage. Each device in a Zigbee setup can help extend the network, so the more you add, the better the whole system gets. No range extenders or fancy tricks needed. I opted for Philips Hue lighting because of wide availability, great CRI rating and rock-solid reliability. However, you can opt for other options like Ikea's smart bulbs. In fact, my colleague Mitja used those in his smart home build out and reported great results.
Elsewhere, I also started looking for Matter support where it made sense. It's still early days, but having devices that are Matter-capable is a good bet for the future. The goal wasn't to chase trends, but to avoid getting locked into something that'll be a dead end in a few years.
Finally, unless absolutely necessary, I avoided cloud-only devices. If something doesn't work without an internet connection, I didn't want it going into my smart home setup. As it stands, my ceiling fan is the only device on my network that is cloud-first and even that can be hacked into for local control. I just haven't gotten around to it yet.
Overbuild your WiFi network from the start

Even if your smart home doesn't rely on WiFi, your life still does. Phones, tablets, laptops, streaming boxes all runs over wireless. So I took this chance to build a strong, stable WiFi network that wouldn't need constant patching or range extenders.
I hardwired multiple access points, three in total, all tied back to a central switch. That gave me rock-solid coverage across the entire house, plus fast, reliable performance for anything that does need WiFi. And I didn't cheap out here. For this build, I repurposed my business-grade WiFi equipment and added additional network switches to it. Proper set up is just as important. That means setting the right power settings on access points and avoiding congested wireless channels. Just a good router, solid APs, and Ethernet backhaul everywhere possible can make a huge difference. That one-time investment meant I haven't had to troubleshoot random WiFi dropouts or laggy video calls for years.
Also, if you're running local smart home servers, Home Assistant dashboards, or even casting audio across rooms, strong WiFi still matters. A good wired backbone makes the wireless side better too with faster roaming, less interference, and smoother handoffs between devices.
Don't automate everything

One of the easiest traps with smart homes is trying to automate everything. It sounds great in theory: millimetre-wave sensors that enable lights that follow you, fans that spin up automatically, and voice controls in every room. But in practice, that level of automation often gets annoying. Things misfire, conditions change, and you end up fighting with the system instead of benefiting from it. I'm talking from experience.
So I took a more intentional approach. I rebuilt Home Assistant from scratch, and for every automation, the first question I'd ask was, 'How does this improve my life?' Motion-based lighting made sense in transitional spaces like hallways, bathrooms, or my staircase, where I didn't want to fumble for a switch. But in living areas or bedrooms, I kept manual and voice control options. Same with temperature-based fan control — it's helpful in certain conditions, but not when weather shifts quickly or someone just opened a window. The fan near my record collection is automated to spin up at a certain threshold because I don't want my precious music turned into warped plastic in Delhi's heat. The other spaces? Manual controls work just fine.
When your hands are full, voice control is great, but it shouldn't be the only way to trigger a light or turn on the fan. I made sure there were physical controls as backups for everything. Hidden switches act as an old-school backup if everything goes haywire. Meanwhile, a centrally mounted tablet acts like the control centre for my living room. Lights in the bedroom are controlled via Zigbee remotes. A good smart home should feel invisible when you don't want to think about it. That's the goal — not to impress visitors with flashy tech, but to quietly make your life a little smoother. And I think I got pretty close to achieving it.
Bonus: Plan for a central control point

This one's easy to overlook. We get used to pulling out our phones or using voice commands, but having a central spot to control everything makes a big difference. In my case, I mounted a tablet on the wall next to the entrance to my apartment. It's easy to reach, displays the time when not being used, and remains easily accessible. It runs a custom Home Assistant dashboard that controls lights, fans, appliances, cameras, and more, and is the hub I go to when I need to check on something quickly or trigger a scene.
I also hid most of the backup switches and wiring behind a central panel. That way, everything is clean on the outside, but still easily serviceable. Think of it like a breaker box but for your smart home.
The best smart homes are the ones that are invisible
Rebuilding my smart home taught me that reliability, not novelty, is what really matters. It's easy to get distracted by nerdy features and voice control gimmicks, but the best smart homes are the ones you don't have to think about. A solid wired backbone, well-planned power and connectivity, and a balance between automation and control go a long way in creating a system that just works. Whether you're starting from scratch or fine-tuning an existing setup, planning with longevity and simplicity in mind will save you time, money, and a whole lot of headaches down the line.

Apple Intelligence was not the primary focus of WWDC 2025, and I'm glad Apple took a more cautious approach this year. There are a few Apple Intelligence novelties in the updates, but Apple didn't promise any big new features like it did last year. Apple also took responsibility for not shipping the smarter Siri. The company didn't quite apologize to users, but it did explain that the Siri demoed at WWDC 2024 wasn't 'demoware.' It worked internally, but it didn't rise to Apple's own expectations, so the smart Siri assistant that can understand context and on-device data for better assistance is still delayed. What I saw at WWDC 2025 gave me hope that it's on the right track. The smarter Siri isn't ready to ship, and we might have to wait until next year to see it, but the foundation that Siri needs will be available on the Mac in macOS Tahoe 26. It has nothing to do with Siri, nor is it a voice assistant, but it's the start of something big. I'm talking about the revamped Spotlight search in macOS Tahoe 26 that blew my mind during the keynote. I'd say macOS Tahoe's Spotlight is easily one of the top 5 announcements from WWDC. In fact, Spotlight on the Mac is at least as important to me as the iPad turning into a touchscreen MacBook with the iPadOS 26 update. As a longtime Mac user, Spotlight has never impressed me. I dreaded searching for anything on the Mac, and I've postponed getting an app like Alfred for longer than I care to admit. With that in mind, these are the ways Spotlight sets the stage for Siri's future. Spotlight in macOS 26 is a beast. It indexes everything on your Mac, including a clipboard section containing everything you copied and pasted during the day. That might sound similar to the old Spotlight, but this time, it actually works. What it means for the future of Siri: Indexing data correctly is a key step for having the assistant look at on-device information for better assistance. But Spotlight does more than just index your data. Spotlight also lets you run shortcuts in the search bar by simply typing what you want the Mac to do. Apple calls this Intelligent Actions, and Apple Intelligence powers the feature. You can tell the Mac (via Spotlight) to summarize documents, create images, and even use a Private Cloud Compute model or ChatGPT to perform a Shortcut. What it means for the future of Siri: Imagine that instead of typing, you could use voice commands to tell Siri to perform the same Intelligent Actions. Spotlight also lets you open apps, which isn't new, but the difference is that it can also open apps you have installed on your iPhone via the Mirroring feature. What it means for the future of Siri: The assistant that Apple demoed last year was able to surface data from apps, but also run in-app actions. The new Spotlight shows off technology that Apple might already be using for its unreleased smarter Siri. Spotlight also lets you run actions with Quick Keys shortcuts. Type 'se' in the search bar to send an email, and then proceed to send that email from Spotlight. Also, the search bar will surface action suggestions based on the app you're using. They'll include Menu Bar shortcuts, and this should improve your productivity. The demo Apple showed at WWDC 2025 showed a user working on a document while interacting with Spotlight. They used Spotlight to find an image and a graph from the Clipboard and even edit the background of the image. Spotlight is also the tool they used to send that document to a shared board. These Spotlight interactions can significantly improve productivity. You don't have to manually navigate to apps if you can do everything from the search bar. What it means for the future of Siri: Imagine telling the Siri assistant to send an email for you to a specific contact. The AI will probably rely on the same underlying tech. The difference is that Siri will understand natural voice commands. Also, the AI-powered Siri will presumably be able to perform actions in apps, rather than pointing you to the right button in the app. Using your voice rather than typing shortcuts and commands in Spotlight will further improve productivity. Spotlight surfaces results that might fit your work schedule or other routines. That means Apple is using AI algorithms under the hood to help the Mac understand your actions. What it means for the future of Siri: Last year's Apple Intelligence reveal featured a Siri that's aware of context. The technology Apple uses in Spotlight will almost certainly come in handy for creating the next-gen Siri assistant. The AI will learn what you're doing and provide assistance tailored to your personal routines. Remember all those rumors detailing Apple's work on search for Spotlight, and a potential interest in creating its own online search tool to rival Google Search? The Spotlight experience in macOS 26 is likely the result of that. The Spotlight capabilities listed above will make macOS Tahoe 26 all the more exciting to use, and I can't wait to see some of them cross over to the iPhone and iPad. What I really want is to see a completely reinvented Siri that can handle voice commands in natural language to perform all the tasks Spotlight can do for you right now. That's the endgame here, and it's probably coming in the next few years. Adaptive Power in iOS 26 Is About to Make Your iPhone Much Smarter About Charging
Usually, I'm the one adapting my behavior based on the power remaining in my iPhone, but starting this fall, I can ask my iPhone to do more of the adapting. A new Adaptive Power setting in iOS 26 can extend battery power by intelligently trimming energy usage in small ways that add up to extend the time before you need to recharge. You can extend the battery life by doing a number of things such as decreasing screen brightness and turning off the always-on display. Or, if your battery level is starting to get dire, you can activate Low Power Mode, which reduces background activity like fetching mail and downloading data in addition to those screen adjustments. Low Power Mode also kicks in automatically when the battery level reaches 20%. If Low Power Mode is the hammer that knocks down power consumption, Adaptive Power is the scalpel that intelligently trims energy savings here and there as needed. Based on Apple's description that accompanies the control, the savings will be felt mostly in power-hungry situations such as recording videos, editing photos or perhaps even playing games: "When your battery usage is higher than usual, iPhone can make small performance adjustments to extend your battery life, including slightly lowering the display brightness or allowing some activities to take a little longer. Low Power Mode may turn on at 20%." Adaptive Power is not on by default and you'll need to opt-in to use it. In iOS 26, you'll find the Adaptive Power toggle in Settings > Battery > Power Mode. Screenshot by Patrick Holland/CNET Since Adaptive Power appears to be using AI in deciding which settings and processes to adjust, I suspect the feature will be available on iPhone models that support Apple Intelligence, which include the iPhone 15 Pro and later. A Reddit thread about Adaptive Power suggests this is the case, with commenters noting it does not show up in iPhone 13 Pro or iPhone 14 Pro models with the beta installed. Adaptive Power sounds like an outgrowth of Gaming Mode, introduced in iOS 18, which routes all available processing and graphics power to the frontmost app and pauses other processes in order to deliver the best experience possible -- at the notable expense of battery life. Although we all want as much battery life as possible all the time, judging by the description it sounds as if Adaptive Power's optimizations will not always be active, even if you leave the feature on. "When your battery usage is higher than usual" could include a limited number of situations. Still, considering that according to a CNET survey 61% of people upgrade their phones because of battery life, a feature such as Adaptive Power could extend the longevity of their phones just by updating to iOS 26. I also wonder whether slightly adjusting display brightness could be disruptive. But because the feature is also selectively de-prioritizing processing tasks, it suggests that the outward effects will be minimal. We'll know more about how well Adaptive Power works as the iOS 26 beta program nears the expected release date in September or October -- battery optimizations are often the last tweaks to be made to operating systems in development just before shipping. If you want to start giving iOS 26 a spin, you can download the first developer beta now; a public beta is expected in July. Just remember that beta software carries risks, especially these first iterations that have recently been set loose from Apple's labs.

Apple's new iPadOS 26 shows Google what Android tablets need
Since the launch of the first iPad, Android tablets have struggled to compete. A lack of optimized apps means that Android tablets still don't offer as seamless a transition to larger displays, which also impacts the best folding phones, where many apps don't take advantage of the larger displays. However, one area where Android tablets have outperformed the iPad is in productivity and multitasking. Samsung's DeX desktop mode has been key to ensuring that some Android tablets offer a desktop-like experience, albeit one that needs more optimized applications. Last week, OnePlus also joined the party with the innovative Open Canvas system on the OnePlus Pad 3. Recommended Videos Until WWDC 2025, Apple had basic multitasking features like SlideOver, despite the hardware powering its best iPads being the same chipset as the new MacBook Air. Last year's iPad Pro M4 (2024) is extremely powerful and ideally suited to the new iPadOS 26 experience. Two days into using it, I've already covered how it's transformed the iPad. However, I've also noticed three things that Google should implement immediately on all Android tablets, as well as a broader problem it needs to address. The new windowing system and optimized apps To varying degrees, the iPad and all Android tablets share a common problem: they both employ a mobile-first platform, adapted for larger screens. As a result, neither quite achieved the same desktop experience offered by the best Windows tablets, which utilize a desktop-class platform optimized for smaller tablet sizes. The new windowing system changes this, and brings the iPad much closer to the Mac. Interestingly, Google also just announced that a new windowing system is coming to Android tablets in Android 16. Built upon the Samsung DeX experience, it's designed to revamp the Android tablet experience, but strangely, it won't be available on folding phones. Instead, you'll need to plug one of the best Android phones into an external display to activate the same feature. Each manufacturer can choose whether to implement Android 16's desktop mode or use an alternative, if at all, so we can still expect to see some differences in multitasking on Android tablets. Having tried the current desktop-mode implementations on Android, it's clear that alongside this feature, Google needs to entice developers to build apps and experiences that can properly transition from a touchscreen tablet to a desktop mode when docked or paired with a keyboard accessory. The menu bar and cursor I've been surprised at how crucial the new menu bar and cursor are to the new desktop-like experience. Two days in, I'm surprised at how quickly it felt familiar, how it feels more desktop-like, and how I already default to looking at the menu bar for options. The experience makes the iPad more akin to the Microsoft Surface than it does to the less-optimized experience offered by Android tablets. The menu bar and revamped cursor also make the iPad feel more like a small Mac rather than a big iPhone. This is a key distinction, as it comes in direct response to criticisms and feedback from iPad owners and the media, who are asking for better apps and features to take advantage of the increased power in the iPad. The new platform goes a long way toward addressing this, especially since the new Files and Preview apps are optimized versions of their Mac counterparts, bringing all the best features to the iPad for the first time. Apple has just announced iPadOS 26, so we won't see many apps build new experiences for it yet, but already, every app has a menu bar. It's filled with all the familiar commands from the same apps on Mac, and instantly familiar even if you use a Windows PC. A seamless transition between desktop and tablet Apple has managed to achieve what every tablet maker has wanted to: an experience that feels seamless whether using it with a keyboard or not. It's powerful enough with a keyboard attached to replace your Mac for many tasks, yet it's designed to work just as well with a finger. I've used the Galaxy Tab S10 Ultra and the OnePlus Pad 3, and I enjoy using both tablets for different reasons. The former is one of the best tablets that Samsung has ever produced, featuring DeX, a best-in-class solution on Android. The latter is an incredibly polished tablet with great specs, offers outstanding value for money, and has the Open Canvas multitasking solution. Each of these is excellent when used as an Android tablet, but neither matches the productivity of a PC or Mac in desktop mode. After installing iPadOS 26 on my iPad Pro, I have instantly become more productive, and it has become my favorite small laptop to use. An alternative to the Apple Magic Keyboard Even if Google were to adopt a similar system and approach to iPadOS 26, there's one other area that Android tablets regularly fall short: accessories. In particular, the Magic Keyboard for the iPad. Available for most of Apple's iPad range, the Magic Keyboard transforms the iPad into a mini laptop by using magnets to suspend it above the keyboard and bring the display closer to your eyes. It essentially mimics the display and keyboard setup of a computer, making it ideal for use on the go. Having used many Android tablets, there's one area that they seem to fall short: the keyboard. Most have adopted a Smart Keyboard or Folio case with an integrated keyboard, but these are ineffective when used on a lap, such as in a car or on a train. The Magic Keyboard holds the iPad in place even in these use cases, making it the ideal small computer for cramped spaces. Tablets have always required some form of tradeoff, especially as they're not as portable as a phone, and usually not quite as capable as a laptop. Microsoft addressed this issue with Windows, and now Apple has resolved it with iPadOS 16. Now, let's hope Google also does the same.
