Mass. man charged after fleeing crash in stolen car and hitting pedestrian
A Billerica man is facing charges in connection with fleeing the scene of a car crash in Lowell in a stolen car and then hitting a pedestrian, the Middlesex County District Attorney's Office said.
Christopher Campbell, 30, has been charged with two counts of leaving the scene of personal injury and one count of assault and battery with a dangerous weapon causing serious bodily injury, carjacking, larceny of a motor vehicle, negligent operation and a marked lanes violation, the district attorney's office said in a press release.
Around 10:25 p.m. Saturday, Campbell crashed his Volkswagen Jetta into another car in the area of Boylston and Rogers Street in Lowell, the district attorney's office said. After the crash, Campbell got out of his car and began jumping on the hood of the other car while shouting.
The other driver was frightened and fled her car, the district attorney's office said. Campbell then stole the other driver's car.
A few minutes later, Campbell drove the stolen vehicle onto the sidewalk on Rogers Street and hit a pedestrian, the district attorney's office said. The man who was hit was taken to a nearby area hospital with life-threatening injuries.
Shortly after 11 p.m., Massachusetts State Police received several reports of a car with no lights on driving erratically and stopping in the left lane of I-495 south in Franklin, the district attorney's office said. A short time later, State Police received a report that the car had been hit by another car while it was stopped in the left lane.
Troopers responded to the scene and found the car abandoned, the district attorney's office said. During their investigation, Troopers determined that the car had been stolen from Lowell.
State Police and Franklin police established a perimeter and began searching for Campbell, who they found on the other side of the highway hunkering down in a culvert, the district attorney's office said. When he saw police, he began yelling that he had a gun.
Franklin police tased him, allowing him to be arrested without further incident, the district attorney's office said. Campbell is expected to be arraigned Monday in Lowell District Court.
Authorities are still investigating the crashes. No further information has been released.

Human skull found in Pitcairn was found inside house last owned by man who disappeared 20 years ago
There is no caution tape on the doors, no evidence markers on the sidewalk and a construction crew is working. But those who live on 7th Street in Pitcairn can't help but think about what was found. 'I want to cleanse the area and call a priest! Seriously,' said neighbor Betty Rice. Allegheny County Police said the homeowner found a skull inside, but according to County Property Records, the homeowner is Charles R. Beltz, who disappeared 20 years ago. 'Was there a crime? Was he just found? Were there any cult practices? I just think it's weird,' said Rice. According to State Police, Beltz disappeared on June 7th, 2005, after traveling to Elk County for a fishing trip. His wife filed a missing persons report, but he was never found. Dennis Dirkmaat recently retired as the Director of the Applied Forensic Sciences Department at Mercyhurst University. For over 30 years he has worked to identify people based on bones. 'Fake vs real is instantaneously, once we take a look at it or see it. But the rest of it is measurements, the look, as I said in detail,' said Dirkmaat. He said in most cases, bones can be identified. 'We have a forensic odontologist, and she got a skull that morning, and by that evening, has been able to compare and make a positive ID,' said Dirkmaat. Allegheny County Police have not identified the skull found in Pitcairn as the construction on the home continues. 'I want justice for the victim... If there is a victim,' said Rice. Metairie man to serve 30 years for 2019, 2021 sex abuse crimes
JEFFERSON PARISH, La. (WGNO) — The Metairie man found guilty in May of drugging and sexually abusing teenagers, has been sentenced. On Thursday, June 12, the Jefferson Parish District Attorney's Office announced 46-year-old Thomas Welty will serve 30 years in prison convicted of: Second-degree rape and trafficking children for sexual purposes involving one victim Indecent behavior with a juvenile Contributing to the delinquency of a juvenile Sexual battery of the other victim On May 20, Welty was found guilty of the crimes that happened between 2019 and 2021 with 15-year-old victims. Former OPSO employee arrested, accused of conspiring to bring drugs into Orleans Parish jail Court documents noted the abuse began during the 2019 Carnival season when Welty provided one victim with alcohol until she ultimately passed out. That's when he took her to his home and injected her with a 'highly addictive methamphetamine.' The encounter caused the victim to develop an addiction to the drug, documents noted. After raping her, Welty allowed two drug-dealing associates to do the same in exchange for narcotics (they have never been identified). During that same month, Welty had given a 'date rape' drug, GHB, to a second victim. She also passed out but woke up in the shower with Welty, according to court documents. It was also noted that the second victim rejected his sexual advances and left his house. During the trial, one victim's impact statement read: 17-year-old shot, killed in St. John the Baptist Parish 'I choose to forgive what you've done, but not for you,' the victim wrote. 'I'm forgiving you for myself, because at the end of the day I need to heal – not you. 'I was so grateful to learn that every seven years, every cell in your entire body is being replaced. And with that being said, how great is it to know that I will finally have a body you will have never touched.' In addition to the sentence, the judge ordered a stay-away order prohibiting any contact with the victims for the next 100 hundred years and for Welty to register as a sexual offender for the rest of his hanged from highway overpass in Juarez House passes DOGE cuts Comer launches probe into LA protests Air raid sirens sound across Israel following an Iranian missile attack on the country Metairie man to serve 30 years for 2019, 2021 sex abuse crimes Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc.
