13 dead, including women & children, several injured in Raipur road crash

RAIPUR: At least 13 persons, mostly women and children, were killed and half a dozen injured in a devastating road accident on the outskirts of Chhattisgarh capital late on Sunday.
The deceased include nine women and a six-month-old infant. The collision occurred near Saragaon on the Raipur–Baloda Bazar highway near Kharora region. The accident took place when a goods vehicle carrying dozens of passengers collided with another vehicle.
There was mayhem at the site as there were bodies scattered all over the road, many were in pieces while the injured cried for help.
The injured people were rushed to BR Ambedkar hospital in Raipur for treatment.

Raipur SSP Lal Umed Singh said the vehicle, loaded with 50 people, was returning from Chataud village from a 'Chhathi' ceremony (a traditional postnatal ritual) held at Bana Banarsi village. They were traveling in a Swaraj Mazda goods vehicle (registration CG 04 MQ 1259), when a speeding trailer truck (JH-05 DP-7584) coming from the opposite direction rammed into them head-on near Saragaon.
The impact was so powerful that multiple passengers died on the spot, and bodies were left mangled and scattered across the road.

Most of the deceased were women and children. Witnesses described a grisly scene, with one elderly woman's body severed into two, highlighting the sheer violence of the crash.
The vehicle was reportedly carrying relatives of Puneet Sahu, whose daughter had recently given birth. They were returning after attending the baby's naming and purification ceremony.
Upon receiving word of the incident, local police and administrative officers rushed to the scene and launched rescue and relief operations.
The injured were first taken to Kharora Community Health Center and then referred to Raipur Medical College due to the severity of their injuries. Many victims remain in critical condition, and officials warn that the death toll could rise.
Police have begun an investigation into the incident and are questioning the driver of the trailer, who is suspected of speeding and possible negligence. Forensic teams have also been dispatched to the scene for further analysis.
Raipur district collector Gaurav Singh said that it was an extremely unfortunate incident, and expressing deep sorrow over the tragedy, he assured all possible support to the families of the deceased and injured.
Local political representatives and public officials visited the site and hospitals, calling the incident heart-breaking and unacceptable.
Demands have been made for road safety audits and stricter traffic enforcement on the accident-prone Raipur–Baloda Bazar stretch.
As grieving families await the final rites of their loved ones, the state reels from one of its deadliest road accidents in recent years.

New Delhi, June 26 (UNI) India today slammed Pakistan for smearing it at various discussions to pursue a nefarious agenda and rejected Islamabad's attempt to deflect attention from the atrocities committed against children in its own land. India's Permanent Representative to the United Nations, Ambassador P Harish, in a UN Security Council Debate 'Effective strategies to end and prevent grave violations against children', said Pakistan is casting unwarranted aspersions over UN processes and also smearing India at various discussions to pursue their nefarious agenda. ''We reject this attempt by Pakistan to deflect attention from the atrocities committed against children in their country, as highlighted in the Secretary General's report, as well as their rampant cross border terrorism,'' he said. Harish said he was constrained to respond to the politically motivated remarks made by the delegate of Pakistan, ''one of the grave violators of the CAAC agenda.'' Guyana had organised the open debate on Children and Armed Conflict (CAAC). He said the world had not forgotten the savage targeted attacks by Pakistan and Pakistan-trained terrorists killing 26 tourists in Pahalgam on April 22. The Security Council had issued a press statement on April 25 which underlined the need to hold perpetrators, organisers, financiers and sponsors of this reprehensible act accountable and bring them to justice. He said India had undertaken non-escalatory, proportionate and focused attacks that targeted nine terrorist infrastructure sites on the May 7 in response through Operation Sindoor. ''The terrorists killed in these attacks were given state funerals by Pakistan. And yet, they try to preach others,'' Ambassador Harish said. Pointing out that the Secretary General's report on CAAC provides details of serious violations against children in armed conflict in Pakistan, he said the Secretary General had expressed concern at the rise in such grave violations reported including attacks against schools, particularly girls' schools, against health workers, and about the incidents in the border areas with Afghanistan where a series of killing and maiming of Afghan children was directly attributed to cross border shelling and air strikes by Pakistani armed forces. The Pakistan army also deliberately shelled India's border villages in May, killing and injuring a number of civilians. ''To preach at this body after such behaviour is grossly hypocritical.'' Ambassador Harish reaffirmed India's stand that the ''entire union territory of Jammu and Kashmir has been, is and will always be an integral and inalienable part of India irrespective of the frequent and incessant spate of lies and falsehoods by Pakistan.'' He said the world is witnessing an alarming escalation in conflicts and terrorist attacks and children are their most unfortunate casualties. As per UNSG's report, grave violations against children have surged 25 percent, while sexual violence has risen 35 percent in 2024 —a sobering indictment that demands immediate and decisive action. Creating an enabling environment for holistic development of children is fundamental for child protection. Their safety, nutrition and education should be prioritised at national and household levels. Children in conflict and post-conflict situations, however, require specialised attention and psycho-social support for their successful reintegration into society. Thus, sustained efforts by the state are required to build these essential ecosystems. He said India leads by example and has taken several steps to protect children and aid their growth and development. India established the National Commission for Protection of Child Rights in 2007 to ensure that all laws, policies, programmes and administrative systems conform to the vision of the rights of the child as enunciated in the Constitution of India as well as the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child. Mission Vatsalya Scheme is a flagship child welfare and protection initiative aimed at ensuring the safety, protection and holistic development of children, especially those in vulnerable situations. "India also undertakes periodic and comprehensive awareness campaigns including among security personnel on child protection and child rights. Another concrete step is incorporating child protection provisions into the standard operating procedures of security personnel. ''Our experience in peacekeeping operations underlines the need to allocate sufficient resources and requisite number of child protection advisers in peacekeeping missions for effective child protection programmes.'' National governments hold primary responsibility for protecting children's rights under the Convention on the Rights of the Child. With over 7,000 children newly recruited by armed groups in 2024, Member States must establish comprehensive legal frameworks to ensure effective prosecution of child-related crimes. Pointing out that children remain particularly vulnerable to indoctrination on violent extremist ideologies and radical terrorist recruitment, he said Member States should work together on the child protection agenda and counter-terrorism. 'It is high time that Member States shed their political inhibitions to hold both terrorist perpetrators and their state sponsors accountable for exploiting the most innocent and vulnerable population,' Harish said. Muzaffarnagar carpet traders brutally assaulted in U'khand hills
Agra/Dehradun: A carpet trader from Muzaffarnagar was allegedly assaulted, robbed and threatened by a group of men during a work trip to Nainital's Mukteshwar area on June 17. The attack took place when the trader was travelling with his brother to deliver carpets in his car. Mohammad Waseem Qureshi, 27, resident of Khatauli in Muzaffarnagar, told TOI that he had been frequently travelling across the hill state for the past 10 years. "This was also one of our routine trips. I and my brother, Fardeen Qureshi, 20, were driving to Mukteshwar around 11am with carpets for sale when a middle-aged man on a motorcycle stopped us." He added that the man asked for their Aadhaar cards and the verification letter traders get from the police. "The moment he read our names, his tone changed. He began abusing us, hurled religious slurs, and said people from our community were not allowed here," Waseem said. He added that the verbal abuse quickly turned into a violent assault. "The man pulled a sharp object, possibly a sickle, from his bike and struck me in the back. He added that he was repeatedly thrashed, and one of the attackers then tried to strangle him with a dog leash. Waseem said that he somehow reached Haldwani and filed a police complaint at Banphoolpura. On Thursday, Uttarakhand police called Waseem to record his statement, but he said he was reluctant to go there without security. "I will go only with police protection. Health dept cracks down on illegal trade of sonography machines
1 2 JAIPUR: Rajasthan health department on Wednesday busted a global racket involved in the illegal trade of portable foreign made sonography machines. Officials said these unregistered machines could be misused for female foeticide due to its small size and power backup. The department's pre-conception and pre-natal diagnostic techniques (PCPNDT) team arrested Amitabh Bhaduri, a gang-member Wednesday. He came to sell machines from Hoogly, West Bengal to Jaipur after he negotiated a deal for Rs 6.3 lakh. Officials said they were tracking the online illegal sale of sonography machines for two months. "We asked one of the health department's employe to call the person selling the machines. The person agreed for a deal after we agreed to transfer Rs 15,000 online," said Devendra Chaudhary, joint director (Bikaner), health department. "He came to the city via train due to security reasons and briefly stayed in the waiting room of the station. We asked him to deliver the machine in Central Park where PCPNDT officials arrested him."
