SpaDEX mission successfully achieves 2nd docking of satellites

New Delhi: Union Minister Dr Jitendra Singh on Monday said that the ISRO's SpaDEX mission has successfully achieved second docking of satellites.
In a post on X social media platform, the minister said he is 'glad to inform that the second docking of satellites has been accomplished successfully'. 'As informed earlier, the PSLV-C60 / SPADEX mission was successfully launched on 30 December 2024. Thereafter the satellites were successfully docked for the first time on 16 January 2025 at 06:20 AM and successfully undocked on 13 March 2025 at 09:20 AM,' he mentioned.
The minister further said that further experiments are planned in the next two weeks.
In January, with the successful docking of the satellites of the SpaDEX mission, India became the fourth nation to ace the space docking technology.
ISRO informed the merging of two small spacecraft -- SDX01, the Chaser, and SDX02, the Target -- weighing about 220 kg each. The satellites were part of the Space Docking Experiment (SpaDeX) mission, which lifted off aboard the PSLV-C60 rocket, from Sriharikota on December 30.
India is now the fourth country, after the US, Russia, and China, to master the docking technology. The docking technology was indigenously developed and has been named the 'Bharatiya Docking System'.
It includes a docking mechanism, a suite of four rendezvous and docking sensors, power transfer technology, indigenous novel autonomous rendezvous and docking strategy, and an inter-satellite communication link (ISL) for autonomous communication between spacecraft, incorporated with inbuilt intelligence to know the states of the other spacecraft, among others.
ISRO believes the SpaDeX mission will help establish India's capability in orbital docking -- a key technology for future human spaceflight and satellite servicing missions.
In addition to joining the elite club of spacefaring nations, docking technology is also key for India's impending space missions including the Moon mission, setting up the Indian space station, and lunar missions like Chandrayaan-4 without the support of GNSS from Earth.

Chouhan launches ‘Viksit Krishi Sankalp Abhiyan'

Bhubaneswar: Union minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan on Thursday launched the 'Viksit Krishi Sankalp Abhiyan', a nationwide campaign aimed at transforming Indian agriculture through scientific intervention. The campaign was launched at Sakhigopal in Puri district in the presence of Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi, Deputy Chief Minister and Agriculture Minister K V Singh Deo, local MLAs and senior agricultural scientists. Chouhan, the Union Minister of Agriculture and Farmers' Welfare and Rural Development, said the campaign seeks to help India become the 'food basket of the world' by directly connecting agricultural scientists with farmers. The campaign aims to realise Prime Minister Narendra Modi's vision of 'Lab to Land' and the concept of a developed India, he added. Under the initiative, scientists from across the country will leave their laboratories to engage with farmers in over 700 districts, providing hands-on guidance and collecting feedback from the field. 'This is the first time since Independence that such a campaign is being undertaken to connect scientists and farmers directly. The initiative is result-oriented, and under Prime Minister Narendra Modi's government, there will be no shortage of funds for agricultural research,' Chouhan said while addressing the gathering. The campaign will run from May 29 to June 12, aiming to reach and directly engage with around 1.5 crore farmers nationwide. Chouhan encouraged agricultural scientists to view their field visits as a service to the nation's 'Annadatas' (food providers). 'You are going to serve the farmers. It is your good fortune that you are getting a chance to go to the village and talk to the farmers and increase their crop production, there can be no greater virtue than this,' he said. He also appealed to farmers to actively engage with the scientists. 'Please take some time to meet them, learn about new farming techniques, and help increase production. Better seeds mean better yield, and I thank ICAR scientists for developing new seed varieties,' Chouhan added. Highlighting India's agricultural achievements, Chouhan said the country produced 3,539.59 lakh metric tonnes of foodgrains this year—216.61 lakh metric tonnes more than last year. 'India is now capable of feeding its population of 145 crore. But we must not stop — we aim to become the food basket of the world, not just meet our domestic needs but also export to other countries,' he said. Chouhan attributed this success to the blessings of Lord Jagannath, underlining the symbolic importance of launching the campaign from Puri, the holy land of the deity. 'This is not just an agricultural campaign; it's a national mission to ensure our food reserves are full and our farmers' incomes rise,' he told reporters after visiting Jagannath temple to seek blessings before the launch. Before inaugurating the campaign, Chouhan participated in a 'Tiranga Yatra' (Tricolour March) and a plantation programme, alongside Majhi and other dignitaries, marking a symbolic commitment to sustainability and national pride.

Photo/Agencies NEW DELHI: Isro successfully performed 10 Collision Avoidance Manoeuvres (CAMs) in 2024 to protect its satellites from potential collision with other objects in space, according to the newly released Indian Space Situational Assessment Report (ISSAR) for 2024. The space agency performs Space Situational Awareness (SSA) activities to protect national space assets from space environmental hazards, such as resident space objects, including space debris, natural objects like asteroids and meteoroids, energy and particle flux. Last year, 89 manoeuvre plans were revised to avoid post-manoeuvre close approaches with other space objects for low earth orbit (LEO) satellites. On two occasions, manoeuvre plans had to be revised to avoid post-manoeuvre conjunctions for Geostationary earth orbit (GEO) satellites, it said. Overall, Isro has carried out 122 CAMs for its earth-orbiting satellites in the last 14 years. The agency said more than 53,000 alerts issued by Combined Space Operations Center of US Space Command for Isro's earth-orbiting satellites were analysed using more accurate orbital data from flight dynamics. Data shows that between 2010 and 2024, 122 CAMs were conducted and a maximum 23 were carried out between 2022 and 2023. Between 2023 and 2024, there were 10 CAMs. 'The number of CAMs was less in 2024 compared to the previous year. This is because improved close approach analysis methodology with larger conjunction screening volume and usage of more accurate ephemerides helped to meet collision avoidance requirements by adjusting orbit maintenance manoeuvres on several occasions and avoiding exclusive CAMs,' Isro explained. About the return of satellites once they complete their mission, Isro said a total of 31 Indian satellites had re-entered the atmosphere till the end of 2024. In 2024 alone, nine Indian satellites did so. Among them was Cartosat-2, which re-entered the atmosphere on Feb 14, 2024, being Isro's first-ever LEO to be deorbited at end-of-life to reduce its post-mission orbital life from more than 30 years to less than four years. A total of 136 Indian spacecraft, including those from private operators and academic institutions, were launched in Earth-orbit till Dec 31, 2024. The number of operational satellites owned by India stood at 22 in lower earth orbit (LEO) and 31 in geo-synchronous earth orbit (GEO) by 2024 end. In addition, two Indian deep space missions, Chandrayaan-2 Orbiter and Aditya-L1 at Sun-Earth Lagrange's point, were active. Isro said 34 rocket bodies re-entered the Earth's atmosphere till 2024 end, and five of such re-entries took place in 2024.
