IPL 2025: Five questions Sunrisers Hyderabad have to answer ahead of next season

India Today27-05-2025

Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) failed to live up to their standards in the Indian Premier League 2025 (IPL 2025) as they finished sixth on the points table with six wins from 14 matches, having 12 points to their name. A season which began by posting the second-highest total in the tournament's history (286/6), it seemed that SRH will once again give nightmares to all teams by flexing their batting muscles.advertisementHowever, they failed to fire consistently throughout the season, which resulted in their batting getting crumbled time and again. As a result, the last year's runner ups were knocked out before the playoffs after failing to emulate their magic from 2024. As SRH aim to make a comeback next season, they will need to find answers to several questions to find the missing puzzles in their squad:1. Is ultra-aggressive approach fruitful every time? While SRH made merry on flat batting tracks in 2024 by consistently posting totals above 240, they faced an uphill task to find their rhythm on pitches which had some bite in them. As a result, they had to settle for below par score on a particular wicket, while being desperate to breach the 200-run mark. Going ahead, SRH need to re-look at their batting approach and plan their targets accordingly, as per the nature of the pitch.2. How to get contributions from middle and lower order?advertisement
For SRH, the bulk of the scoring was done by Abhishek Sharma, Ishan Kishan and Heinrich Klaasen. While the trio played a few breathtaking innings, they failed to get the support from the middle and lower order and hence couldn't get a perfect finish to their innings. Hence, the team management need to instill confidence in their under performers to get the best out of them.3. Can Mohammed Shami return to his best? After SRH bought Shami for Rs 10 Crore at the mega auction, everyone expected t he veteran seamer to form a formidable new ball pair with Pat Cummins. However, Shami had an indifferent season with the ball as he could only scalp six wickets from nine innings. The speedster also looked out of rhythm, having recently recovered from his injuries. Heading into the next season, the SRH management will have to make a decision on Shami's retention after assessing his form and preparedness to play full season.4. Which is the ideal new ball pair?SRH didn't have a stable new-ball pair throughout the season as they were forced to make changes due to their misfiring bowling attack. By the end of the season, they found gems in the form of Jaydev Unadkat and Eshan Malinga, who consistently provided them with breakthroughs. Hence, heading into the next season, the team management need to finalise a potent new-ball, which can provide them with crucial breakthroughs in the powerplay and put the opposition on the backfoot.5. Finding a wicket-taking spinneradvertisementSRH were dealt a major blow early on in the season as Adam Zampa got ruled out due to a shoulder injury. His absence left a massive void in their team as they failed to find a wicket-taking spinner in the middle overs. Harsh Dubey came to their rescue right at the end of the tournament but their playoffs hopes were crushed by then. Hence, they need to go in with an attacking wicket-taking spinner, who can break partnerships in the middle overs.Stay updated on IPL 2025 with India Today! "Overpaid...": RCB Legend AB De Villiers' Shock Revelation After IPL 2025 Triumph

Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) clinched their first Indian Premier League (IPL) title on Tuesday, as they beat Punjab Kings (PBKS) in the IPL 2025 final. Despite having had exceptional T20 cricketers like Chris Gayle and AB de Villiers in the past, it was the first time in 18 years that RCB won the title. While Gayle and de Villiers were present to celebrate with RCB, former India cricketer-turned-broadcaster Abhinav Mukund revealed an interesting remark that de Villiers had made to him, where he had said that he felt he was overpaid during his time as a player in the IPL. "I was sitting next to AB de Villiers and he told me something that I don't think any legend in the IPL has said. But he genuinely meant it, he said it from a place of emotion. He said 'I was overpaid'," Mukund revealed. "I'm overpaid, I thought I was overpaid because I feel like all of the other elements that you're talking about, right? Where you're able to buy so many other superstar players, all those match winners you're talking about. The highest amount of money that they spent on was for someone like a Phil Salt or Josh Hazlewood. They didn't cross 15 (Rs 15 crore)," was what de Villiers had told Mukund, as revealed by the latter. De Villiers was retained twice by RCB ahead of a mega auction over the course of his 11-year stint with the franchise. In an era where valuations where lesser, de Villiers was retained for Rs 7.50 crore and Rs 11 crore in 2014 and 2018 respectively. While RCB did not spend Rs 12.50 crore on any player at the mega auction, they did retain Virat Kohli for Rs 21 crore. They also went up to Rs 23.50 crore to try and get Venkatesh Iyer, who landed up in Kolkata Knight Riders for Rs 23.75 crore. Mukund stated that not getting Venkatesh ended up working in RCB's favour, given that he scored just 142 runs in 11 matches in IPL 2025. "In hindsight, they must be thinking, thank God we didn't go all the way from Venkatesh Iyer. Because their last losing bid was Venkatesh Iyer. And the next three buys were Josh Hazlewood, Jitesh Sharma and I think Phil Salt. Those were the next three buys. And they saved so much in the bank for day two when Bhuvneshwar Kumar came in," said Mukund. Listen to the latest songs, only on

The comment quickly drew attention, and so did Mahvash's epic comeback. 'I have been hosting cricket since 2019, your knowledge is nil chotu! Research!" she replied, along with a facepalm emoji.
