Drone Strike Hits Russian Grain Port, Injures Five
MOSCOW: The mayor of the Russian port city of Novorossiisk declared a state of emergency on Saturday after local authorities said a Ukrainian drone attack had damaged a grain terminal and several residential buildings, injuring five people.
There was no immediate comment from Ukraine, whose air force said Russia had attacked Ukraine overnight with 183 drones and two ballistic missiles.
Andrei Kravchenko, the mayor of the Russian Black Sea city of Novorossisk, was shown inspecting damage to three apartment buildings in video released on his official Telegram account.
The video showed debris scattered in front of apartment buildings, a crushed car, blown out windows and balconies hanging off the buildings' facade.
Kravchenko said one of the injured people, a woman, was in hospital in a serious situation. Two children had also been injured, local authorities said.
The governor of Russia's southern Krasnodar region Veniamin Kondratyev said that debris from falling drones had also damaged three storage units at a grain terminal in Novorossiisk, sparking a fire.
Nobody had been injured, he said.
Delo Group, the owner of the damaged grain terminal, said in a statement that a clear-up was underway and that a fire there had been extinguished.
'DeloPorts terminals is operating normally in accordance with internal instructions and the instructions of relevant authorities and agencies,' the company said. (

Lithuania sentences thief of rare Russian books
VILNIUS: A Lithuanian court on Monday sentenced a Georgian national for stealing rare editions of Russian literary classics, accusing him of belonging to a group behind a spate of similar thefts across Europe. Mikheil Zamtaradze was sentenced 'for stealing, as part of an organised group, 19th-century publications valued at 606,000 euros that have high cultural and historical value,' judge Mindaugas Ražanskas told reporters at the Vilnius City District Court. He was sentenced to three years and four months in prison. The Georgian national was arrested in Belgium in 2023 and transferred to Lithuania later the same year. He is now due to be taken to France, where he is accused of similar thefts. He admitted stealing 17 books, including works by Alexander Pushkin and Nikolai Gogol, from the Vilnius University Library in May 2023. During a court hearing in April, Zamtaradze said the book thefts were commissioned by a Russian employee of a Moscow auction house, according to Lithuanian media. He claimed the man had also provided him with a fake ID for entering the university, as well as the forgeries to be placed at the library in place of the stolen works. Zamtaradze said he smuggled the books through Belarus and was paid 30,000 euros in cryptocurrency. The culprit worked as part of a group operating across Lithuania, Poland, France, Switzerland, and Georgia, Lithuanian prosecutors said. Authorities also arrested two other Georgian nationals, but their cases are being tried separately. The European Union Agency for Criminal Justice Cooperation coordinated legal actions across European countries in November 2023 after similar thefts from libraries in France, Germany, Poland, Latvia, Estonia, and Switzerland. At least some of the stolen books were reportedly later sold at auctions in Russia. Vilnius University has now enacted additional security measures to prevent similar thefts, VU chancellor Raimundas Balciunaitis told AFP in a written response. 'Access to rare documents will be granted only after prior agreement with the staff in charge,' he said.

Latvia probes MP over Russian language rights row
RIGA: Latvia said on Monday it had initiated a criminal case against lawmaker Aleksejs Roslikovs for backing Russia, an 'aggressor state', and fomenting hatred in the country. The State Security Service (VDD) intelligence agency said this followed a June 5 parliamentary debate when Roslikovs, a member of the Russian-speaking minority, was removed from the chamber. He had shouted in Russian 'We are the majority!' and 'Russian is our language', according to Latvian media. He is suspected of 'providing assistance to the aggressor state Russia in action directed against Latvia and triggering national hatred and enmity,' the VDD said. If convicted, he faces up to five years in prison. The debate followed Latvia's decision, taken after Moscow's 2022 invasion of Ukraine, for Russian-speaking residents of Latvia to pass the Latvian language exam or face deportation. As of 2025, around 23 percent of Latvia's 1.8 million population describe themselves as ethnic Russian, according to the country's statistics office. However, the requirement to pass the language exam will only apply to a small portion of the ethnic Russian population. Roslikovs is head of the For Stability! party, which advocates for the ethnic Russian minority. The eurosceptic party secured 10 seats in the 2022 parliamentary election. In a video posted on Facebook, Roslikovs said the accusations were the result of his fight 'for truth and justice' and that he was 'defending part of the population that lives in Latvia'. In a statement posted on his social media today, Tengku Zafrul stressed that the possibility of running in a by-election was never part of his decision-making process when he chose to leave Umno. 'I strongly disagree with triggering by-elections without urgent necessity, as they consume both time and public funds,' he said.
