Elephant mothers form strong emotional bonds with calves

KUALA LUMPUR: An elephant mother carries her calf for 22 months, and this lengthy gestation period creates a strong bond between the two, said Wildlife and National Parks Department (Perhilitan) director-general Datuk Abdul Kadir Abu Hashim.
He said a female elephant's pregnancy, the longest among land animals, highlights the significance of the mother's role in raising her calf.
Kadir said the psychological bond between a mother elephant and her calf begins during pregnancy and continues through nursing and the calf's early life.
"As mammals, there is both an emotional and physical bond between a mother elephant and her calf.
"This relationship goes beyond the physical, it is deeply psychological," he said.
He was commenting on a heartbreaking incident in which a female elephant refused to leave the body of her calf, which was killed by a trailer on the Jalan Gerik–Jeli in Perak early yesterday.
Kadir said elephants, particularly the Asian elephant (Elephas maximus) and African elephant (Loxodonta africana), have complex and affectionate social structures.
On average, a calf nurses from its mother for two to four years. However, in some cases, this may extend up to five years.
From an animal psychology perspective, Kadir said the calf not only learns to walk and forage from its mother but also develops an understanding of emotions such as empathy, affection, and grief.
"Studies show that elephants can remember individuals and exhibit deep sadness when they lose a family member.
"The loss of a mother or calf is a major trauma for the elephant family.
" In cases of poaching, orphaned calves often show signs of depression, loss of appetite, and difficulty adapting to new groups. Similar symptoms are seen in mother elephants who lose their calves," he added.

Vietnam exports first African swine fever vaccine batch to Indonesia

The shipment, consisting of 120,000 doses of the AVAC ASF LIVE vaccine, was sent to Indonesia on Monday following nearly three years of evaluation and testing in collaboration with Indonesian authorities. The vaccine was officially approved for use by Indonesia's Ministry of Agriculture in April this year. The importer and distributor is PT. Biotis Prima Agrisindo, based in West Java. According to Nguyen Van Diep, General Director of AVAC Vietnam, the export underscores the vaccine's quality and efficacy, having passed Indonesia's stringent veterinary approval process. He said the milestone reflected not only the company's success but also the progress of Vietnam's veterinary vaccine sector in establishing a presence on the global stage. The live attenuated vaccine is the first of its kind in the world to have been successfully developed and commercialised, a result of intensive research by AVAC. The product has so far been used to administer over 3.5 million doses, with around three million doses deployed across Vietnam to help contain ASF outbreaks in various localities. Nearly 500,000 doses have already been exported to the Philippines and Nigeria, both of which have responded positively to the vaccine. AVAC currently maintains a reserve of approximately 1.5 million doses to meet urgent domestic and international demand. The company is also pursuing regulatory approval in several other countries, including India, Malaysia, Nepal and Myanmar. In Vietnam, the vaccine has been rolled out on a large scale in provinces such as Cao Bang, Lang Son, Bac Ninh, Hai Duong, Hai Phong, Quang Ninh, Quang Ngai and Tra Vinh, with the support of local funding. Field results have shown the vaccine to be highly effective and safe, with no recurrence of ASF in vaccinated herds. Veterinary authorities are continuing to assess the vaccine's use in breeding pigs, including both sows and boars, to extend protection across the entire pig population. Initial trials have indicated good safety and efficacy, though full evaluation is still underway. Le Toan Thang, head of Veterinary Medicine Management Division at the Department of Livestock Production and Animal Health, said the successful export to Indonesia further demonstrated the effectiveness of Vietnamese-made vaccines. He said that Vietnam's ability to control ASF domestically helped build trust in the product and opened the door for more exports. All exported veterinary vaccines must undergo rigorous testing, independent trials and safety assessments in the importing country before they are approved for use. AVAC's product has successfully met these standards. AVAC is one of three domestic manufacturers currently licensed to produce ASF vaccines in Vietnam, alongside Navetco Central Veterinary Medicine JSC and Dabaco Group. — Vietnam News/ANN

Zambia declares national mourning for ex-president Edgar Lungu

ZAMBIA on Saturday declared seven days of national mourning in honour of the country's former president Edgar Lungu, who died in South Africa on Thursday, the government said. Lungu, who died at the age of 68, ruled the large but sparsely populated southern African nation from January 2015 until August 2021, when he lost to current President Hakainde Hichilema. 'The government of the republic of Zambia wishes to inform the nation that President Hakainde Hichilema has accorded a state funeral to the sixth president, Edgar Lungu, who died on 5 June,' said the secretary to the cabinet, Patrick Kangwa. The government announced that all flags would fly at half-mast from June 8 to 14 and that entertainment events would be suspended during that time. Kangwa said that the body of Lungu would arrive in Zambia next Wednesday and that Belvedere Lodge in the capital Lusaka had been designated as the official place of mourning. Lungu was receiving specialised medical treatment in a clinic in Pretoria, South Africa, his political party the Patriotic Front (PF) said. He was suffering from recurring achalasia, a condition caused by narrowing of the oesophagus.
