
Omani students develop innovative solar panel defect detection system
Muscat: A student team from the University of Technology and Applied Sciences in Shinas has created an innovative technique for detecting defects in solar panels using a drone equipped with thermal imaging. This technology enables rapid defect analysis and resolution, earning the team numerous local and regional awards, as well as presentations at various scientific conferences and events.
Fatma bint Mohammed Al-Maamari, a team member, explained that the project addresses defects caused by environmental, electrical, and mechanical stress. The drone, carrying a thermal camera, gathers data which is then processed using advanced technologies, including a "Deep Learning Mod." The project progressed through research, preparation, data collection, and evaluation stages. The team focused on improving defect detection accuracy and reducing processing time, categorizing solar panel images as intact or defective, and enhancing them with contrast and filtering techniques.
Mahra bint Saeed Al-Kaabi, another team member, noted that the prototype was tested on solar panels at the university. Practical experiments and adjustments were conducted to refine the model. The team then deployed the model in a real-world environment to monitor solar panel performance periodically, documenting all stages and results in a detailed report.
Zahra bint Saleh Al-Sanani highlighted the team's ongoing work to integrate drones with augmented reality and advanced artificial intelligence applications to further enhance defect detection accuracy. They are also developing 3D models for better defect visualization and automated processes for defect detection and maintenance scheduling.
Sara bint Saeed Al-Saidi emphasized the project's significance, noting its publication in prestigious international scientific journals, including "Energy," "Hydrogen Energy," and "IEEE Xplore." The project has been presented at events such as the Oman Science Festival, the Second International Conference on Computing and Data Analysis, the Sixth International Gas Conference at Qatar University, and the Fifteenth International Conference on Hydropower Production at the University of Sharjah in the UAE. The team earned third place in the Royal Army of Oman's Scientific Club competition for the best innovation and received the Research Excellence Award at Majan College.

MUSCAT: 'Raf', a student-led start-up under the University of Technology and Applied Sciences in Muscat, has developed an innovative Omani digital platform that empowers users to create AI-powered e-stores tailored for the local market. The platform eliminates technical barriers for youth and e-commerce enthusiasts through its intuitive interface. Saif al Hashar, CEO of Raf, said that Raf allows automated store setup, price adjustments, competitor tracking and smart data analytics — aligning with Oman's digital transformation vision by supporting SMEs with AI solutions. With a 12-member interdisciplinary team, Raf offers flexible subscription plans catering to diverse entrepreneurs. 'Our mission is to democratise e-commerce entry and equip Omani youth with smart business tools,' Al Hashar stated. Selected among Oman's top 40 start-ups from over 300 applicants in the 'Injaz Oman 2025' programme, Raf completed its prototype in early 2025 after development began in January 2024. The company plans to launch the full platform by early 2026 while seeking seed funding and strategic partnerships. A smart way to clean your car's AC
Muscat: Engineer Mahmoud bin Mohammed al Hinai, a lecturer at the University of Technology and Applied Sciences in Nizwa, has devised a smart method for cleaning and sterilizing the interior of a car's air conditioner without having to disassemble the dashboard, which will be mentioned by the Ministry of Higher Education, Scientific Research and Innovation in its magazine. The idea revolves around adding miniature sprayers, similar to the water jet sprayers found in cars, to clean the glass. These sprayers are installed in front of the air conditioner's evaporator (refrigerator) from the inside, and are connected to the sprayers with a tank containing special air conditioning cleaning fluids. These are environmentally friendly and available in the market at affordable prices. The cleaning process can be completed within minutes by the user or by maintenance centers. The cleaning fluids exit from the bottom of the car along with a special pipe for draining condensed water from the air conditioner. This innovation contributes to eliminating the unpleasant air conditioning odor that all car users notice when the air conditioner is turned on, which is caused by accumulation of dust, fungi, and microbes in the air conditioner's evaporator (refrigerator), which has cost some car companies more than a billion and a half dollars just because of the odour. Generally, cleaning the air conditioner without having to disassemble the dashboard is an expensive, tiring, and time-consuming process that results in more problems, such as annoying noises when the dashboard is reinstalled incorrectly. He will represent the Sultanate of Oman at the exhibition Geneva International Invention Fair 2025, supported by the Ministry of Higher Education, Scientific Research and Innovation.
