UEFA's Čeferin calls 64-team men's World Cup plan 'a bad idea'

Yahoo03-04-2025

A push to expand the men's 2030 World Cup to 64 teams is 'a bad idea,' UEFA President Aleksander Čeferin said on Thursday.
Čeferin is a FIFA vice president who was part of a March 6 online meeting of the world soccer body's ruling council when the unexpected proposal was made by a delegate from Uruguay.

'This proposal was maybe even more surprising for me than you," Čeferin said at a news conference after UEFA's annual meeting in Belgrade, Serbia. 'I think it is a bad idea."
Adding 16 more teams to the 48-team lineup that will debut next year in North America appears to have support from FIFA President Gianni Infantino, who typically backs competition expansion as a way to raise money and drive development of the game globally.
Critics of the 64-team proposal have argued it will weaken the quality of play — in what would likely be a sprawling 128-game format — and devalue the qualifying program in most continents with extra entries on offer.
'It is not a good idea for the World Cup itself and it's not a good idea for our qualifiers as well,' Čeferin said.

UEFA has 16 entries in the 2026 World Cup which the United States will co-host with Canada and Mexico. It reset the European qualifying format with more groups, now 12, and many teams playing fewer games spread over just 10 weeks from September through November this year.
Čeferin also cast doubt on the origin of the idea from Uruguay, which is set to host one game in 2030 in what is already the most complex World Cup across three continents to celebrate the tournament's centenary.
UEFA members Spain and Portugal are co-hosting with Morocco, but agreed to let South American neighbors Argentina, Paraguay and Uruguay have one game each to mark the 100-year anniversary. The 1930 edition was hosted by Uruguay.
'It is strange that we did not know anything before this proposal at the FIFA council,' Čeferin said. 'I don't know where it came from."

Infantino made a keynote speech earlier Thursday to UEFA's 55 member federations though made no reference to a 64-team World Cup.
FIFA has given no details of how and when it will consider the proposal. FIFA has its annual congress of 211 member federations on May 15 in Paraguay capital Asuncion.

Mauricio Pochettino hits back at Christian Pulisic: 'I'm the head coach'

After Christian Pulisic spoke about why he chose not to play for the USMNT in the Gold Cup this summer, head coach Mauricio Pochettino was asked about those comments before the tournament opener against Trinidad and Tobago. It's safe to say Pochettino wanted to remind everyone he's in charge of the USMNT. Not Pulisic. Asked about Pulisic's comments to CBS Sports — he revealed he said he could play in the friendly games against Turkiye and Switzerland but not for the Gold Cup, but Pochettino decided not to call him up for the friendlies — this was the response Pochettino gave to reporters on Saturday. Pochettino: 'Players need to stick with our plan' 'With Christian, he explained that he wanted to be involved in the two games and, knowing that, I respect and understand him,' Pochettino said. 'I understand him, but I don't need him to understand our decisions. My position is that I am 53, with a lot of experience in football, and I was a player before I was a coach. If you want to understand this, it's really obvious. It's easy to understand that I wanted a roster to prepare in those two games because, for me, the Gold Cup is a very important competition. It's not a problem because you need to listen and communicate.' 'Players don't need to understand or not understand that,' Pochettino continued. 'Players need to listen and stick with our plan. They cannot dictate the plan because, if so, then we'd invert positions, no? It is obvious, and the most important thing is that we explain. We explained why we decided not to include him in the two friendlies. And then if you have some problems, it's not a problem if you understand or don't understand. 'I think it's so clear that we say that we want to start training with the same group for two friendly games. And it's up to us to assess, to analyze if you need rest or not. We have a group of professionals in performance, doctors, coaches, all in the federation, that can assess it. We assessed Sergino [Dest], we spoke with Sergino, and we decided not to include him in the Gold Cup and not in the two games... When I signed my contract with the federation, I am the head coach. I am not a mannequin.' What next for Pulisic, Pochettino? Pochettino also revealed he wanted the USMNT star to play in the Gold Cup this summer. Less than a year out from a home World Cup, this is far from ideal for the USMNT. Pochettino's best player is clearly not the flavor of the month and the USMNT head coach went on to challenge the winger to prove how good he is the next time he links up with the national team. 'The communication is good with him, just like with any other,' Pochettino said. 'I have the same communication with him as with others. I do not prioritize. You can see he's the best player and, yes, he's a good player, but he needs to perform. And I'm not going to treat him differently than, say, Diego [Luna]. If he performs well, then he's the best and he'll have a place with the national team. But it's not that players are here because they want to play, or want this or want that.' Pulisic has now put some serious pressure on himself and Pochettino is not a coach who focuses on individuals. He is all about the team. The way he has handled this situation with Pulisic proves that to every single one of his players.

FIFA's $2 Billion Soccer Extravaganza Kicks Off With a Whimper

Miami Gardens, Fla. The idea of inventing a brand new global soccer tournament and putting it in America was always going to be audacious. But in creating the Club World Cup, FIFA flexed every muscle. It rounded up 32 teams, 12 venues, and over $1 billion in prize money Against all odds, it even managed to draw 61,000 fans to its opening match on Saturday night—an unlikely matchup between a plodding Inter Miami side and the Egyptian club Al Ahly. The one thing that FIFA couldn't engineer was goals. As the tournament kicked off with the first of 63 matches, the grand spectacle conceived by FIFA President Gianni Infantino had to settle for a 0-0 draw. Not even Miami's Lionel Messi, one of the Club World Cup's star attractions, could break the tie. In fact, Messi was lucky not to lose. Though he forced a couple of spectacular saves from the goalkeeper, he was in the rare position of being an underdog. Al Ahly, one of the most decorated clubs in world soccer, had the better chances to win and even had a first half penalty saved. 'I'm disappointed with the result—we could have taken all three points,' Al Ahly forward Wessam Abou Ali said. 'We respect Inter Miami and their big-name players, but we could have finished the game in the first half by scoring three or four goals.' The more significant takeaway from the evening was the surprising show of force from the Al Ahly fans. FIFA had orchestrated things so that Inter Miami could play the opener in its home city in an effort to drive up attendance. But it was the Egyptian fans who took over Hard Rock Stadium, 6,500 miles from the Nile, with red Al Ahly shirts far outnumbering Miami's pink jerseys. 'It's like we were playing in Cairo,' Al Ahly manager Jose Riveiro said. The Egyptians players won't be the only ones to feel a taste of home away from home during this tournament. While plenty of venues have seen sluggish ticket sales, it's already clear that a handful of clubs will enjoy robust traveling support. In Miami, fans of Buenos Aires-based Boca Juniors were ready to flood Hard Rock Stadium for their Monday match against Portugal's Benfica. And in New York, a merry contingent of Brazilian Palmeiras fans signaled their arrival by pouring into Times Square on Saturday ahead of their opener against Porto. FIFA is hoping for plenty more to make the trip as the tournament progresses. Beyond the U.S., the biggest markets for ticket sales have been Argentina, Brazil, and Mexico, the organization said. But not even FIFA—or perhaps Al Ahly—could have anticipated so many Egyptian supporters suddenly materializing in South Florida. 'To be in the States and have it like you were playing at home,' Riveiro said, 'is something that can probably only happen here.' Write to Joshua Robinson at
