
Tracing Jordan's Prehistoric past: Archaeological findings in Tafileh
AMMAN — Archaeological teams studied the area near Tafila and many Paleolithic localities were examined by members of different scholars. One of the areas was near Jurf ed-Darawish and the Wadi Juhayra/Qusayr, in the south.
'The site, which abuts a large basalt flow associated with Jabal Juhayra, was initially described as a dense lithic scatter covering an area of 20m x 40m on the north bank of the Wadi Qusayr, a small wadi that drains into the Wadi Juhayra,' said Mike Neeley from Montana State University.
Neeley added that surface artefacts included microliths, bladelet cores, and micro burins, all of which are consistent with a Late Epipaleolithic or Natufian occupation.
'Reassessment of the site size in 2006 identified surface materials scattered along an E-W axis paralleling the wadi with overall dimensions of roughly 100 m (E–W) x 50 m (N–S) for an area of 5,000 m2. One of the striking aspects of this site is its association with other Late Epipaleolithic sites along the wadi,' Neeley explained.
He added that survey along both sides of the wadi identified eight additional sites that contained Late Epipaleolithic material remains.
"This cluster of Late Epipaleolithic remains is somewhat unusual as sites from this time range are usually more widely scattered. In the case of the TBAS sites, the use and reuse of the area is probably the result of greater resource availability associated with paleo-environmental conditions very different from the present. "
'Following the survey, test excavations were undertaken in 2006 at TBAS 102 and 212 and the smaller of the two sites, TBAS 102 measured approximately 15 x 20 m. The excavations at TBAS 102 exposed an area of 4 m2 to an average depth of 35 cm below the modern surface,' Neeley underlined.
He said that this resulted in the recovery of more than 9000 pieces of chipped stone along with limited quantities of fauna.
"Furthermore, the small size of the lunates and the absence of Helwan retouch also square [or agree] with a Late Natufian temporal affiliation. Given the exploratory nature of the excavations, materials were removed in 10 cm levels and screened through a .33 cm mesh."
"This enabled the recovery of shell beads, microlithic tools, and small pieces of lithic debitage," Neeley elaborated, noting that these test units yielded a very high quantity of lithic materials (over 22,000 artefacts)."
In addition to the lithic materials, fauna, shell, and ground stone were recovered from the excavations. It is worth noting the excavation of a previous test unit in 2004 by a Japanese scholar Sumio Fujii focused on the southern edge of the site disturbed by modern digging.
Fuji described the presence of thick (ca. 30 cm) ashy deposit in this area along with fauna (primarily gazelle), microlithic artifacts and ground stone implements.
"Given the size of the site [his estimate was ca. 1,000 m2] and the abruptly backed lunates, he suggested that it functioned as a Late Natufian base camp," Neeley said, noting that the excavation in Unit 2 proceeded in four levels reaching a depth of 40 cm below the ground surface.
The excavations at TBAS 212 reinforce the importance of the wetland/marsh ecological base for Natufian settlement in west-central Jordan, the scholar said, adding that the site location near this resource in the Wadi Qusayr follows the pattern established for the Early Natufian in the Wadi Al Hasa to the north.
"The size and density of material at TBAS 212 indicate intensive and/or repeated settlement of the site during the Late Natufian. A lingering question from this work is the date of the occupation."
"The typological assignment to the Late Natufian seems secure, but how the cold, dry conditions of the Younger Dryas affected the occupants remains uncertain. Did occupation of the site cease with the onset of the Younger Dryas or did the wetland environment continue to be productive and serve as a refuge for these foraging populations ?" Neeley speculated.
TBAS 212 is a key component to understanding how these Late Natufian populations adapted to changing conditions and the site continues to have much potential for addressing these issues.
"To conclude, it is worth revisiting the initial impetus for this research—MacDonald's surveys in west-central Jordan. Without these broad, temporally inclusive survey projects, we would have had a much impoverished understanding of the Paleolithic archaeology of the region," Neeley underscored.

Ammonite structure discovered on eastern side of Amman Citadel
Remains of ' the Ammonite Palace' an Iron Age structure on Amman Citadel (Photo of Saeb Rawashdeh) AMMAN — While most visitors to the Amman Citadel head towards the well-known landmarks on the western side, such as the Temple of Hercules, the Jordan Archaeological Museum and the Umayyad Palace, few venture eastward. But that may soon change following a significant archaeological discovery. Professor Zeidan Kafafi, a prominent Jordanian archaeologist, revealed that a previously overlooked section of the Citadel has yielded evidence of an ancient Ammonite structure. "Nobody thinks to come to the eastern side of the Citadel because they don't know about the important archaeological sites located there," Kafafi said. The discovery was made inadvertently. A government plan to build a school on the eastern slope prompted preliminary excavations by a construction company. Work was immediately halted when workers recognised archaeological remains beneath the surface. "When the idea of building a school was dropped, the Greater Amman Municipality decided instead to develop a public park in the area," Kafafi added. What followed was a formal excavation initiated by Jordanian archaeologist Fawzi Zayadine, who invited an international team to investigate further. Their efforts uncovered remnants of an Ammonite structure, informally referred to as the 'Ammonite Palace'. Among the most intriguing finds were four double-faced stone heads and a mysterious glass ball, discovered within the ancient structure. The project is a joint venture of the Department of Antiquities of Jordan, the German Protestant Institute of Archaeology, German Archaeological Institute from Berlin and local experts like Professor Kafafi. Now in its second year, the excavation is being led by Professor Catharina Schmidt of the University of Münster, as part of the Amman Archaeological Project. The team is exploring layers dating back to the Iron Age, as well as the Roman-Byzantine period. Recent finds include fragments of ivory and alabaster, a partially burned object, and a sophisticated water channel system. "There is no spring on the Citadel, so water had to be collected and redirected into a cistern through these channels," Schmidt explained. However, the team has yet to locate the cistern itself. Excavators plan to continue their work by uncovering Roman-era housing layers and gradually digging deeper in hopes of reaching more Iron Age levels.

NCCD approves 65 new school textbooks as part of curriculum overhaul
The National Centre for Curriculum Development (NCCD) says on Sunday that it has approved 65 new school textbooks (Petra photo) AMMAN — The National Centre for Curriculum Development (NCCD) said on Sunday that it has approved 65 new school textbooks, including student books, workbooks, activity materials, and teacher guides, spanning various academic subjects from kindergarten through Year 12. In a statement, the Centre said the newly approved materials cover Arabic language, Islamic education, English language, science, mathematics, digital skills, and early childhood education. Among the most notable additions are the kindergarten resources, which include image cards, story collections, and practical guides for teachers to support early learning. The Islamic education curriculum has been expanded with new textbooks and teacher guides for Years 2, 5, and 8, as well as the Year 12 textbook for the academic stream's first semester, the statement said. The English language curriculum saw the release of student books, workbooks, and teacher guides for Years 2, 4, 10, and 12 (advanced level). Updated Arabic language teacher guides were also introduced for Years 4, 7, and 10. For Year 12 students, new science and mathematics materials were approved, including textbooks and experiment/activity books in chemistry, physics, biology, and earth and environmental sciences. Mathematics textbooks and workbooks for the first semester were also finalised, following earlier drafts published on the NCCD website, the statement said. The Centre said these curricular reforms were part of its ongoing efforts to modernise Jordan's national curriculum in line with international best practices and the evolving needs of the education sector, while adhering to the philosophical and legal foundations of Jordanian education. The reforms also aim to strengthen critical thinking, integrate linguistic and digital competencies, and uphold national and religious values. All new materials were developed in accordance with modern academic and pedagogical standards, drawing on input from specialised authoring and review committees. The NCCD also ensured that content accounts for students' diverse needs and individual learning differences.

Funded by the Royal Academy of Engineering-UK, the workshop was organised in collaboration with the University of Bradford, Applied Sciences Private University and Yarmouk University, according to a RSS statement. The event marked the completion of two main projects. The first project, Golden Thread to Sustainability, Inclusivity, Affordability and Futureproofing in Global South through Innovative Advancements in Net-Positive Housing (SIAH-NP), introduced a new model for housing in developing countries, focusing on sustainable, innovative, and affordable housing. The project views housing not just as shelter, but as a tool to promote sustainable development. It seeks to improve energy, water, and food systems, while also raising the quality of life in surrounding areas. SIAH-NP adopts a net positive approach, designing housing systems that create more environmental and socioeconomic value than they consume. This is achieved by integrating Modern Design Methods of Construction, circular economy principles, and smart decentralised systems. These components work together to minimise environmental impact and increase resilience to climate change. The second project, Community Mapping of the WEFE Nexus within Refugee Camps in Jordan (CoMAP), focuses on building community-based mapping frameworks for managing the water, energy, food, and ecosystems nexus in refugee camps, using Baqaa camp as a case study. It emphasises the role of community participation in mapping and decision-making for better resource planning and management. Despite earlier efforts in mapping, much of the existing data in refugee camps is either outdated or inconsistent. CoMAP highlights the need for updated, accurate geospatial data to support long-term planning. The workshop underlined the importance of these projects in improving refugee living conditions, promoting sustainability, and supporting social justice in refugee communities. It also emphasised their potential in helping policymakers, urban planners, and housing experts design practical solutions for the housing sector.
