Arsenal 'yet to make a formal bid for Benjamin Sesko due to one stumbling block surrounding Leipzig striker - with Gunners looking at another alternative if things don't change'

The Benjamin Sesko sweepstakes during this summer transfer window have taken another twist, according to reports in Germany. The RB Leipzig striker has been a long-time Arsenal target, with the club having had offers rejected in May last year and the most recent January transfer window. The Gunners are keen to bolster their attacking options having finished second in the Premier League for a third-straight season. Sesko is their priority signing but however, according to German reporter Florian Plettenberg no bid has yet been submitted - and that is down to one key reason. Leipzig value Sesko between £68million and £85m - figures the north London outfit are reportedly unwilling to reach. He adds that Arsenal and Sesko's camp remain in contact, but personal terms between the two parties are not yet fully agreed. Furthermore, Plettenberg claims that the Mikel Arteta's side are succession planning and are still monitoring the situation with Sporting's wantaway striker Viktor Gyokeres. If Gyokeres can leave for his verbally agreed fee with the Portuguese club, believed to be between £51-59m, then the north London outfit will remain interested However, as reported by Mail Sport earlier this month, Sesko - who scored 21 goals and registered six assists in all competitions last season, including four in the Champions League - wants the move. Leipzig only finished seventh in the Bundesliga in 2024-25 and will not be able to offer their star striker Champions League football next season, while the Gunners will be playing in Europe's elite club competition. The in-demand 22-year-old Slovenian has already rejected a move to Saudi side Al-Hilal, such is his preference to join Arsenal.

Bernard Lacombe dead at 72: Legendary France striker who won Euro 1984 passes away as tributes flood in

Legendary former France international Bernard Lacombe has passed away at the age of 72. The prolific striker is perhaps best remembered as one of the victorious European Champions of 1984 alongside Michel Platini, and netted 12 times for Les Bleus in his 38 international appearances. One of those strikes remains a record-breaker today, after Lacombe scored within 30 seconds of the World Cup clash with Italy back in 1978, France's fastest at football's greatest competition. Beyond success on the international scene, Lacombe was known in the seventies and eighties as one of the most lethal forwards in France. In fact, he has the second-most goals of any player in Ligue 1 history, registering 255 strikes in 497 appearances across stints with Lyon, Saint-Etienne and Bordeaux. French giants Lyon, where he played 258 times, paid tribute to their former star and manager on social media in the wake of the tragic news. 'It is with immense sadness that we learned on Tuesday evening of the passing of Bernard Lacombe,' they wrote. 'All our thoughts are with his family and loved ones, as well as with the fans of Olympique Lyonnais and football. 'Rest in peace, Bernard.' After hanging up his boots, Lacombe went on to manage Lyon - where he came through the ranks having been born in the city - for four years between 1996 and 2000, winning the Intertoto Cup in 1997. He would also spend 20 years as a special advisor to owner Jean-Michel Aulas, and was reportedly crucial to the retention of a number of the club's Brazilian players, such as Juninho. French Football Federation president Philippe Diallo, added an emotive response to the news, saying: 'It is with deep sadness that I learned of the passing of Bernard Lacombe. Bernard Lacombe left an indelible mark on French football, as a player, coach, and manager. 'He was one of the greatest strikers in the history of French football. The second-highest scorer in Division 1, he made his mark on the glorious history of Lyon, Saint-Étienne, and Bordeaux. He also shone with the French national team. His goals helped establish Les Bleus on the international stage. 'Bernard Lacombe was a major contributor to the 1984 European Championship title. He performed some of France's greatest feats, including his goal in the opening seconds of the game against Italy at the 1978 World Cup. He was undoubtedly a source of inspiration for many strikers. 'After his remarkable playing career, Bernard Lacombe put his footballing knowledge to work for Olympique Lyonnais, his beloved club. 'With Jean-Michel Aulas, whom I am thinking of very much in these difficult moments, he formed a duo that transformed OL into a successful club. 'Deeply attached to his city, his club, and his friends, Bernard Lacombe will be deeply missed. 'The Federation will pay tribute to him. On behalf of all French football, I extend my most sincere condolences to his family and friends.' Bordeaux, for whom he featured 297 times and scored 137 goals, added on X: 'With immense sadness, Bernard Lacombe has just left us at the age of 72. 'Having played for [Bordeaux] between 1979 and 1987, this legendary striker left his mark on the club's history with his talent and generosity. 'The entire Marine et Blanc family mourns today a striker of rare elegance, one of the greatest players in the club's history. Thank you, Bernard.'

Roaring defiance, lads! England's Young Lions claw their way back from 5-1 down to earn stunning 5-5 DRAW with Germany at UEFA U19 Euros

There may be some question marks against the England's senior team presently, but the future looks promising for the future - with the heart shown by their Under 19s side. On Tuesday night, the Young Lions took on Germany U19s in their second Group B match of the ongoing UEFA U19 championship. England found themselves 4-1 down at half-time and the score only worsened after the interval as their long-standing rivals extended their lead to make it 5-1. However, a four-goal salvo in 11 minutes saw the Young Lions raw back into the match and staggeringly earn a 5-5 draw at the Stadionul Arcul de Triumf in Bucharest, Romania. The remarkable result is the highest scoreline in the tournament's history. Germany, who will be kicking themselves at dropping points from this position of strength, took the lead on seven minutes when Noah Darvic slotted home after being picked out by Said Al Mala. Al Mala then doubled their lead on 31 minutes but Will Antwi's side pulled one back four minutes later when Fulham midfielder Josh King who finished emphatically inside the penalty area. King's strike sprung Germany back into action though and as a deflected strike from Kjell Watjen and a header by Leopard Wurm saw them take a commanding 4-1 lead into the break. The Germans continued the second half as they ended the first, by scoring their fifth of the match when Al Mala added another just three minutes after half-time. However, Antwi's side regrouped and began their stunning comeback when Manchester United's Ethan Wheatley scored in the 52nd minute with an instinctive poacher's finish. Tottenham midfielder Reiss-Alexander Russell-Denny reduced the deficit to two goals just three minutes later, before Nottingham Forest's Zach Abbott scored the 2022 champions' fourth just after the hour mark. Crystal Palace's Jesse Derry - son of former Eagles captain Shaun - capitalised on an error from Germany goalkeeper Konstantin Heide to see England restore parity on 63 minutes. With momentum with England, there was even a chance for Caleb Kporha to snatch victory in stoppage time but he fired over. The result leaves Germany bottom of the group, while England are in second spot to set up a thrilling final-day scenario against the already-qualified Netherlands as they seek a spot in the semi-finals. England face the Dutch on Friday evening in Bucharest at 6pm (BST). There are eight teams taking part in the tournament, with the top two from two groups of four advancing to the semi-finals which take place on June 23. The final takes place at the Rapid-Giulesti Stadium in Bucharest on June 26.
