Sacked driver & friend held for elderly couple's murder in Rajendranagar
Hyderabad: Five days after an elderly couple was murdered in their home in Rajendranagar, their former driver and his friend were arrested on Tuesday for the crime.
The accused, ex-driver Mohammed Shakeel and his friend Mohammed Mujeebuddin, were caught based on CCTV footage, DCP (Rajendranagar) Ch Srinivas said.
Police said the motive was unclear, but suspected that the driver may have bore a grudge as he had been jobless since being sacked. Cops also did not rule out robbery, but the accused claimed to have taken only Rs 600 from the man's pocket.
The bodies of the couple – Shaik Abdullah Abdul Hamid (77), a retired assistant general manager of SBI, and his wife Ummatur Rafai Rizwana (70), a retired lecturer – were found by the watchman soon after two persons, one in burqa and another in a mask, left the duplex flat on June 5.
The couple lived on the fifth and sixth floors of the building, while the remaining portions have been rented out. They have four children, two residing in the US and two in London, police said.
Police found that Shakeel had worked for two years as a driver for Abdullah's family. About eight months ago, Shakeel was sacked by Abdullah as he was unhappy with his work.
Cops said that the person in the burqa was Shakeel and Mujeebuddin was the one with the mask. On June 5, the duo had gained entry by telling the watchman they had come for physiotherapy. They locked the door and then allegedly attacked the couple who were found with several stab wounds.

Dragged To Taluka Office On Stretcher Over Land Dispute, 90-year-old Woman Dies In Tamil Nadu
Last Updated: The woman's son alleged the deputy taluka officer rejected her patta application five times and demanded Rs 5 lakh per acre as bribe, despite all documents being in order A 90-year-old woman from Naranapuram, near Palladam in Tamil Nadu's Tiruppur district, died after being taken on a stretcher to the taluka office for a land transfer — a tragic end to her battle against alleged land grabbing and official apathy. The elderly woman, who was in frail health and undergoing treatment, had recently discovered that her 27-acre property in Madappur village had been usurped by others when she attempted to transfer the patta to her heirs. She had submitted an application to the taluk office seeking to reclaim the land. Despite her condition, on June 10, authorities insisted that the elderly woman, who was undergoing treatment for age-related health issues, appear in person. Her family was forced to bring her in an ambulance, lying on a stretcher. Her son, Shanmugasundaram, alleged that the deputy taluka officer had rejected her application five times and demanded a bribe of Rs 5 lakh per acre to transfer the patta, even though all the documents were in order. He also accused the official of colluding with those who had encroached on their land. The woman died without receiving timely medical care. Her family has blamed the revenue department for her death, citing negligence and harassment by officials.

Over ₹17k challans pending against Hyd police vehicles
At a time when citizens are turning traffic vigilantes, law keepers are found breaching regulations. As per a RTI filed by city-based traffic educator Lokendra Singh, a fleet of vehicles registered under the Director General of Police Telangana have accumulated 17,391 challans - some pending since 2017. Though the total challan amount stands at around Rs 68 lakh, the department might have to cough up a penalty of Rs 1.36 crore. This, as Section 210B of the MV Act, 2019, states that if an authority empowered to enforce the Motor Vehicles Act commits an offence, they are liable to a penalty twice the amount corresponding to that offence. These challans, issued to police vehicles with registration series TS 09 PA XXXX and TS 09 PC XXXX, are in use by senior police officials. Most of the violations are related to over-speeding. When TOI checked for details on the portal, it found that a majority of these police vehicles (Innova) had 10 to 15 challans each. City police issued more than 50 lakh challans in '24, collected over 46L Surprisingly, some vehicles had unpaid challans pending since 2018. For instance, one police vehicle TS 09 PA XX88 had 11 challans starting from Oct 2018 to April 2023. The total outstanding amount: 11,385 'Fines auto generated' "The majority of traffic fines against police vehicles are automatically generated by speed detection cameras that monitor vehicles exceeding speed limits. We will forward these fines to the respective officers and ask them to provide evidence justifying their speed violations," said Rahul Hegde BK, deputy commissioner of police (traffic), Hyderabad commissionerate and public information officer, traffic branch. He added: "The fines will be withdrawn if we find that the vehicles were responding to emergency situations, conducting patrol duties, or were involved in VIP escorts." Lokendra Singh, a volunteer with Hyderabad City Security Council said such traffic violations set a bad example for the public. "When they see police personnel flouting regulations, it diminishes their trust in the system and leads them to question the necessity of following rules. I have also noticed that many police vehicle drivers often do not use seat belts while driving," said Singh. Over 50 lakh challans Hyderabad city police issued as many as 56.3 lakh challans in 2024, with most violations involving riding without helmets and driving on the wrong side. The authorities collected 46.6 lakh against these challans - 82% of the total amount.
