Genting Berhad's (KLSE:GENTING) one-year decline in earnings translates into losses for shareholders
It's easy to match the overall market return by buying an index fund. While individual stocks can be big winners, plenty more fail to generate satisfactory returns. That downside risk was realized by Genting Berhad (KLSE:GENTING) shareholders over the last year, as the share price declined 34%. That falls noticeably short of the market decline of around 5.7%. Notably, shareholders had a tough run over the longer term, too, with a drop of 32% in the last three years. While the stock has risen 3.7% in the past week but long term shareholders are still in the red, let's see what the fundamentals can tell us. Trump has pledged to "unleash" American oil and gas and these 15 US stocks have developments that are poised to benefit. While markets are a powerful pricing mechanism, share prices reflect investor sentiment, not just underlying business performance. One imperfect but simple way to consider how the market perception of a company has shifted is to compare the change in the earnings per share (EPS) with the share price movement. Unfortunately Genting Berhad reported an EPS drop of 79% for the last year. The share price fall of 34% isn't as bad as the reduction in earnings per share. So the market may not be too worried about the EPS figure, at the moment -- or it may have expected earnings to drop faster. The graphic below depicts how EPS has changed over time (unveil the exact values by clicking on the image). We know that Genting Berhad has improved its bottom line over the last three years, but what does the future have in store? This free interactive report on Genting Berhad's balance sheet strength is a great place to start, if you want to investigate the stock further. While the broader market lost about 5.7% in the twelve months, Genting Berhad shareholders did even worse, losing 32% (even including dividends). Having said that, it's inevitable that some stocks will be oversold in a falling market. The key is to keep your eyes on the fundamental developments. Regrettably, last year's performance caps off a bad run, with the shareholders facing a total loss of 3% per year over five years. We realise that Baron Rothschild has said investors should "buy when there is blood on the streets", but we caution that investors should first be sure they are buying a high quality business. It's always interesting to track share price performance over the longer term. But to understand Genting Berhad better, we need to consider many other factors. To that end, you should be aware of the 2 warning signs we've spotted with Genting Berhad . But note: Genting Berhad may not be the best stock to buy. So take a peek at this free list of interesting companies with past earnings growth (and further growth forecast).
