Journalist Bazyani held in Al-Sulaymaniyah, rights center urges release
Shafaq News/ Authorities in Al-Sulaymaniyah, Kurdistan Region, arrested Kurdish journalist Bashdar Bazyani, the Metro Center for the defense of journalists' rights announced on Wednesday.
"This afternoon, journalist Bazyani was informed to visit the Sarchnar Police Station in Al-Sulaymaniyah, where he was interrogated and then transferred to the Criminal Court. A court order was issued for his detention until February 9,' the center stated.
Journalists Sardasht Hama Salih and Dana Salih went to the detention center to visit their detained colleague but were reportedly denied access.
The rights center called for the immediate release of Bazyani on bail, stressing the need to 'handle journalistic cases under the Press Law and avoid applying alternative laws to journalists concerning their media work and freedom of expression.'
In 2022, Al-Sulaymaniyah Investigation Court sentenced Bazyani to ten days in detention after two lawsuits were filed against him by the mayor of the province and an investor over his coverage of a corruption case involving the sale of public land.
A year later, Al-Sulaymaniyah Police raided Bazyani's home, detaining him for about 10 hours. The journalist confirmed undergoing prolonged interrogation over a lawsuit filed by Ali Babir, leader of the Kurdistan Islamic Justice Group, after he reported on corruption allegations involving the movement's political office leadership.
The journalist further revealed in 2024 that he had three outstanding arrest warrants and was being pursued by the police and courts 'without proper adherence to the Region's journalism laws.'

Shafaq News – Washington/ Tehran On Friday, US President Donald Trump reiterated that Iran's nuclear sites were not evacuated prior to the airstrikes, noting that the facilities were destroyed despite all the fake news about the achievements of US pilots. Trump stated that Iran is unlikely to restart its nuclear program in the near future, but warned that he would consider launching another strike if Tehran resumed uranium enrichment. He also vowed to respond to Iranian Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei's recent statement declaring an Iranian 'victory' in the conflict. Both Iran and Israel were exhausted and wanted to bring the confrontation to an end, the US president pointed out, adding that Iran is now seeking to open dialogue with Washington, without offering further details. Calling for renewed inspections, he emphasized that the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), or any trusted entity, should be allowed to examine Iranian nuclear sites. Iraq's elections: Al-Nasr Coalition pulls out, backs State Forces Bloc
Shafaq News – Baghdad Al-Nasr Coalition (The Victory), led by former Iraqi Prime Minister Haider al-Abadi, announced on Friday that it will not field its candidates in the upcoming parliamentary elections, opting instead to support the National State Forces Alliance. In a statement, the coalition affirmed its commitment to remaining part of the National State Forces Alliance. However, it said it would refrain from direct participation due to concerns over the integrity of the electoral environment. "Al-Nasr refuses to participate in elections dominated by political money and lacking firm enforcement of legal safeguards against manipulation, vote-buying, misuse of public funds, foreign financing, and exploitation of state resources," the statement read. The coalition argued that a political entity's credibility and ethical standing are defined by its conduct, not by its electoral size. 'True political weight comes from values, effectiveness, and national roles — not from flawed electoral metrics,' it added. Al-Nasr emphasized the need to reform the electoral process to ensure broader participation and the selection of competent leaders, urging a shift away from unethical influences that could distort election outcomes. 'A conscious, free, and fair vote is what produces leaders truly deserving of public office,' the statement said. The coalition also stressed the importance of preserving Iraq's democratic political order, warning against any attempts to undermine the system or promote instability. The parliamentary vote is set for November 11. Iraq's Independent High Electoral Commission has finalized registration for political entities and continues to update the voter database, which now includes roughly 30 million registered voters.
