Yushun Himba: Kamunyak Snatches the 2nd Jewel of the Fillies' Triple Crown
German jockey Andrasch Starke, who made his JRA G1 debut in 1997 captured his long-awaited first G1 victory in the 86th running of the Yushun Himba.

Fourth favorite Kamunyak used a powerful closing kick from behind to win the Yushun Himba (Japanese Oaks), the second jewel of the Fillies' Triple Crown, on Sunday, May 25.
It was her second graded and first G1 victory.
The great grandchild of 1995 Japanese Oaks victor Dance Partner, Kamunyak broke her maiden in her debut start (Chukyo, 2,000 meters) in August 2024.
After a fourth-place finish in the Elfin Stakes (Kyoto, Listed, 1,600 meters) in February, the Black Tide filly claimed the Flora Stakes (Tokyo, G2, 2,000 meters) on April 27, earning the ticket to her first Classics' challenge.
Trainer Yasuo Tomomichi pocketed his first Oaks victory and 23rd Japan Racing Association G1 title.
Jockey Andrasch Starke, who has been riding under a short-term license since March 9, landed his much-awaited JRA G1 title in his 25th challenge at that level — his first was in the 1997 Japan Cup (Caitano, fourth place).

At Tokyo Racecourse, breaking from stall No 15, Kamunyak was reserved in mid-division but dropped back a bit, turning the last corners before making a wide sweeping move into the straight.
The daughter of Black Tide began to uncoil an impressive run from there. She drew even with Arma Veloce (jockey Mirai Iwata's ride) 200 meters out. Then, with another gear, she dug in well in the last strides to notch the title. ( Watch the full race on the JRA's YouTube channel. )
"The pace was not so fast in the second half of the race and before the homestretch, I moved to the outside where she responded very well," Starke said after the 2,400-meter race. "She's an amazing horse — she just won four weeks ago.

Starke then spoke about his thrilling achievement on Sunday.

Looking to turn the tables this time, Oka Sho (Japanese 1000 Guineas) runner-up Arma Veloce broke smoothly from the innermost stall and sat on the rails in tandem with Oka Sho winner Embroidery (Christophe Lemaire) up to the final corner.
After launching her bid and splitting horses before the 200-meter pole to emerge as the leader, the 2024 Best Two-Year-Old Filly was soon caught by the eventual winner and rallied in the deep stretch. Arma Veloce put up a stubborn fight but surrendered the win at the wire by a head. And she was forced to settle for second place once again.
Tenth choice Tagano Abby (Yusuke Fujioka) was off slow and unhurried trailing in the far rear of the 18-horse field. While most of the runners fanned out at the last turn, the chestnut filly smoothly took an inner route in the stretch, launching the fastest drive over the last three furlongs (33.5 seconds). She ran strongly to place third, finishing 1¼ lengths behind the runner-up.
Paradis Reine (Yuji Tannai) was fourth, missing out on third place by a neck's length. Lynx Tip (Mirco Demuro) finished fifth.
After a good break, race favorite Embroidery was eased back to settle between horses in seventh to eighth from the front. But after hitting the straight in a good striking position, the Oka Sho victor came out of the uphill climb with nothing left and placed a disappointing ninth.
The Tokyo Yushun (Japanese Derby) is the JRA's next G1 race on June 1 at Tokyo Racecourse.

BARCELONA, Spain (AP) — England needed a second-half goal from Harry Kane to secure a 1-0 win over lowly Andorra and maintain a perfect record under Thomas Tuchel after three World Cup qualifiers on Saturday. BayStars' Shugo Maki Plays a Key Role for the Reigning Champs
Every championship team needs a player like Shugo Maki. The Yokohama DeNA BayStars infielder was a big contributor to his team's Japan Series triumph in 2024 and is chipping in again this year in a big way. After a bit of a slow start, the BayStars turned it up a notch in May and headed into June in second place in the Central League standings, just 2½ games behind the front-running Hanshin Tigers. (Check out the updated standings on the NPB website.) Maki has been on fire of late and as of June 2, led the league with a .305 batting average, was second in RBIs with 36 and was second in homers with 10. But it's not just his stats. Maki is a pure leader and you can tell by the way he interacts with his teammates that they look up to him. A three-time NPB All-Star and two-time Best Nine Award winner, Maki was selected in the second round of Japan's 2020 professional baseball draft. The BayStars had a brief power outage at the end of May when they were shut out in three straight games from May 25-28. During this stretch they lost 3-0 to the Hiroshima Carp before back-to-back 1-0 losses to Hanshin. They finally broke out of their slump on May 29 with a 5-1 win over Hanshin, a game in which Maki hit his eighth homer of the season. On the positive side, the team got some stellar pitching during these games. The next night, Anthony Kay gave up one run on five hits while striking out five over six innings to end up as the hard-luck loser against the Tigers. This season, Kay, Bauer and Andre Jackson have been three outstanding starters for Miura. Kay is 4-2 with 44 strikeouts and a 1.15 ERA, and Jackson is 5-1 with 50 strikeouts and a 1.27 ERA. Bauer, who deserves a better record, is 3-3 with 60 strikeouts and a 3.30 ERA. Kay and Jackson are first and third, respectively, among ERA leaders in the Central League as of June 2. The Eagles are in fifth place in the Pacific League with a 23-26-1 record, six games back of the front-running Hokkaido Nipponham Fighters. The acquisition of Voit should give them some much-needed pop in their lineup. In the COVID-19-shortened 2020 season, Voit led the American League in home runs (22). Voit spent the 2024 season in Mexico where he hit 23 homers and had 57 RBIs for Olmecas de Tabasco. At 34, his big league career is likely over but he could be a nice fit for the Eagles as they bid to stay in contention. Heading into June, Tsuyoshi Shinjo's team held a 2½-game lead over the Orix Buffaloes atop the Pacific League standings. Shinjo's team showed steady signs of progress last season. So it's not a total surprise that the Fighters are doing well. One of the team leaders is Dominican outfielder Franmil Reyes, who is off to a hot start. The fan favorite has a league-leading 28 RBIs and 11 homers on June 2. He is well on pace to match or surpass his 2024 totals of 25 homers and 65 RBIs. The standout former pro has been teaching kids in Indonesia how to play the game. Kudo recorded 224 wins as a pitcher for the Seibu Lions, Fukuoka Daiei Hawks, Yomiuri Giants and Yokohama BayStars in a stellar career that spanned almost three decades. He also managed the Hawks to five Japan Series titles between 2015 and 2020. Kudo mentored about 100 Indonesian junior high school students at a clinic in Jakarta in May. Soccer is the most popular sport in the Southeast Asian country, but Kudo is hoping baseball will catch on there. "I hope more Indonesian children play baseball," Kudo said in a recent interview with NHK. "I want people around the world to know how wonderful this sport can be." Raptors NBA draft: Why Frenchman Noa Essengue makes a whole lot of sense for Toronto
This is the eighth part in a series on prospects who could be drafted ninth by the Raptors on June 25. It's hard to imagine many NBA fans spent the winter wondering how Noa Essengue's season was going and what his skills might do to enhance the chances of a team here. Now they probably are. The 18-year-old Frenchman, still finishing his season with the EuroLeague team Ratiopharm Ulm in the top German league, has become one of the darlings of the mock drafts of late, leaping up to the top 10 echelon heading into this month's festivities. ARTICLE CONTINUES BELOW It's hardly a surprise. The six-foot-10, 200-pounder is a quick, rangy big man with three-point shooting ability and what appears to be a promising future as he matures. His youth might be the most intriguing aspect of his character. He's basically the same age as presumed No. 1 pick Cooper Flagg — Essengue's three days older than Flagg — and while his raw skills aren't at Flagg's level, there's plenty for NBA teams to work with. He's shooting 51.6 per cent from the field with Ulm and is as comfortable cutting off the ball to the basket as he is firing away from outside; a package that would seem to make him a perfect fit for the style of play currently in vogue in the NBA. Career-high 22 points and 14 rebounds for Noa Essengue exploded in Game 1 of the German playoff semis. Notwithstanding any other deals that might pop up around the draft and July's free agency period, Essengue wouldn't have to play right away in Toronto, wouldn't have any pressure to make a serious contribution even for the next two seasons or so and would give the Raptors' developmental program a raw piece to mould. He's also the kind of under-the-radar selection Toronto's known for gambling on and they've taken scouting trips to Europe a few times to check in on him. The entire league got an up-close look at him before the 2024-25 season when, as a 17-year-old, he hit three three-pointers and scored 20 points for Ulm in an exhibition game against the Portland Trailblazers last fall. He carves out great swaths of space in a couple of giant strides, while his length allows him to be disruptive in passing lanes all over the court. He'll have to grow into his body but at such a young age, that's entirely expectable. Essengue's flaws? They are not crushing and, again, not unexpected because of his youth. There may not be one single skill that stands out — he does an awful lot of things well, not one with eye-popping excellence — but there may be one that emerges as his career begins. High-intensity professional competition is much preferred to some antiseptic, one-against-nobody workout in a quiet gym. There are those who think the teenager's professional season in Germany is far preferred to playing in the American college program because of the experience it provides and the test it presents. 'He's been playing against men who want are playing for their careers,' one Eastern Conference scout said. 'Tell me that's not more revealing?'
