Kenya police say MP killing appears 'targeted and premeditated'
NAIROBI, KENYA - The killing of a Kenyan member of parliament, Charles Ong'ondo Were, in the capital Nairobi, appeared to have been targeted, police said.
The MP was shot by a passenger on a motorbike late Wednesday as he was in a car on the major Ngong Road which runs through the capital, according to eyewitnesses cited in the police statement released hours afterwards.
"The nature of this crime appears to be both targeted and premeditated," National Police Service spokesperson Muchiri Nyaga said in the statement.
After the gunman fled on the motorbike, the driver of the vehicle rushed Were to Nairobi hospital where he was pronounced dead on arrival, Nyaga said.
Neither the driver nor a male passenger, also in the car at the time of the incident, were hurt during the attack, the statement said.
"At this stage, it is too early to provide further details," Nyaga added.
The police service "condemns this heinous and senseless crime and will spare no effort in investigating the matter," he said.
President William Ruto expressed condolences to Were's family and constituents in a post on X.
"We urge the police to conduct a thorough investigation into this incident. Those responsible must be held to account," he said.
The speaker of the National Assembly Moses Wetang'ula said the killing had "robbed the nation of a distinguished legislator".
He said in a Facebook post late Wednesday that Were was "a fearless advocate for his constituents, and a man deeply committed to the democratic ideals and service to the people he represented".
Were was a member of the Orange Democratic Movement, led by veteran politician Raila Odinga.
"We have lost a gallant son of the soil," Odinga said, reacting to the news of Were's death.
Odinga challenged the results of the 2022 election which he lost to Ruto, but has entered a political alliance with the president in recent months.
Were represented an area in Homa Bay county, a rural area in western Kenya.

CAPE TOWN - Parliament's Constitutional Review Committee has received more than 250 proposals to amend the Constitution. But it could take up to a year to decide how many of them are worthy of the attention of the committee which is currently still dealing with legal opinions on submissions made during the previous administration. Prior to that, the Constitution had not been amended since 2012 after an attempt to amend Section 25 to allow for land expropriation without compensation in 2021 flopped without the two thirds majority required by the National Assembly. Breytenbach says some submissions exceed 100 pages, and Parliament's administrative and legal staff will have to categorise the submissions depending on their substance. "It's not a must that the committee must find matters that must be brought to the National Assembly. If none of them are of any significant import, then we will again call for submissions." Breytenbach says it could take up to a year to grapple with these serious submissions. "Even that takes a long time because then you have to find the space for those people to come and present. You have to hear all the presentations. The pros and the cons." Among submissions received by the committee deal with the consequences for impeached individuals which Breytenbach says warrants Parliament's urgent attention.

Man sentenced to life imprisonment for murdering partner
A man was sentenced to life imprisonment after murdering his partner in early May 2025. The Free State High Court handed down the sentence to Abel Serame Mathige (39), who was found guilty of murdering his partner, 51-year-old Anna Motaung, after assaulting her. She later succumbed to her injuries at Boitumelo Regional Hospital. Police responded to a report about a patient who passed away following an alleged assault by their partner. Upon arrival, the police were escorted to the body of the deceased, identified as Motaung, who had been declared dead by the hospital. A 57-year-old man allegedly murdered her partner at an automotive dealership in Mthatha on Saturday, 31 May 2025. According to a police statement, the deceased went to the dealership, where her partner is an employee at. The two lovebirds got into a heated argument where the suspect allegedly assaulted the victim and took her to a hospital. Initially, the suspect said that thugs assaulted her lover near the dealership. The police statement mentioned, 'The suspect visited the victim in the hospital, bringing her refreshments. The victim subsequently became sick and ultimately died at approximately 13:55 that same day.' The postmortem results are said to reveal the cause of the victim's death. The police arrested the suspect on Friday, 6 June 2025. A manhunt has been launched after the dead bodies of a couple were discovered at a residence in Sekonye village, Limpopo. A worried family member went to the residence where her relative was after she could not reach him on his phone. Upon arriving, she discovered the lifeless body of her relative and his 34-year-old partner. Initial investigations reveal that both the victims had sustained gunshot wounds. Additionally, a firearm, believed to have been used in carrying out the murder, was found at the scene. 'The motive behind the tragedy remains unclear; however, domestic violence cannot be ruled out as a possible factor,' read the statement. A case of murder and an inquest has been opened while investigations continue. Kamogelo Baukudi: Breakthrough in kidnapping of Free State teen
A 42-year-old police sergeant has been taken in for questioning and detained in Bloemfontein, Free State, in connection with the kidnapping of 19-year-old Kamogelo Baukudi. The teenager was kidnapped on Thursday, 5 June and has not been seen since. South African Police Service (SAPS) spokesperson in the Free State, Brigadier Motantsi Makhele said the sergeant will appear in court soon in connection with the case. Free State police commissioner Lieutenant General Baile Motswenyane, has reiterated the SAPS's unwavering commitment to uncovering the full truth behind this heinous crime. Motswenyane said the investigation has now entered a crucial phase. 'The involvement of any SAPS member in criminal acts will not be tolerated. Culprits will be held accountable – even if they are within our own ranks,' Motswenyane said. The SAPS continues to appeal for public assistance.
