Alpine's First Electric Sports Car Has Mid-Engine Proportions

Alpine's First Electric Sports Car Has Mid-Engine Proportions

Motor 15 days ago

You know times are changing when Alpine has not one, but two EVs in its lineup. Following the launch of the A290 hot hatch last year, Renault's performance arm introduced the
A390
this week as the brand's first SUV. Sorry, it's a
sport fastback
. Currently hidden under a cover, a third electric model is in the works for a 2026 release. It won't be an addition to the lineup but rather a replacement for the gasoline-powered A110.
Alpine will
stop taking orders
for the turbocharged sports coupe in early 2026, shifting its focus to the EV successor. Initially, the Dieppe-based niche brand partnered with Lotus in 2021 to co-develop a small electric performance car. Just two years later, however, the companies parted ways. Renault chose to pursue the project independently, funding the model's development without a partner.

While the upcoming electric A110 no longer features a 1.8-liter gasoline four-cylinder behind the seats, it still maintains the proportions of a mid-engine car. It retains Alpine's signature quad lights, though they've evolved from circular to hexagonal. The company previously explored electric sports cars with the
A110 E-ternity prototype
, unveiled in 2022. That model weighed 3,037 pounds (1,378 kilograms), making it 568 pounds (258 kg) heavier than its internal combustion counterpart.
On the subject of weight, Renault CEO Luca de Meo has stated the production A110 EV will be lighter than ICE models in its segment, not that many of those are still available anyway. Porsche is
discontinuing the 718 Boxster and Cayman
in October, with electric replacements planned for the 'medium term.' Although front-engined, we should mention the BMW Z4 M40i dies next year.
De Meo acknowledged that investing heavily in a niche product like the A110 EV was 'not rational,' but the project was approved nonetheless. To help offset development costs, Alpine will also use the bespoke platform for the upcoming A310, a larger and more practical derivative with rear seats.

The new Alpine and Porsche EVs will enter the rarefied electric sports car space, which already includes the
MG Cyberster
. Currently sold only as a convertible, the Cyberster will soon gain a coupe version with rear seats to beat the A310 to the market.
Alpine's portfolio will continue to grow with larger vehicles, at least one of which is expected to come to North America. Hopefully, the electric A110 will also receive a US visa. The ship has already sailed for the gas model, as production is set to end next year.

Pixel 10 Pro Pricing Will Define Android's Future

Update, Monday June 2, 2025: This article has been updated with details on the early launch date of the Pixel 10 and Pixel 10 Pro smartphones. Pixel 9 Pro XL As Google prepares to launch the Pixel 10 and Pixel 10 Pro, it will be focusing on the story it tells to consumers. However, a deeper story is being told by the Pixel 10 family, revealing the direction Google is driving the Android ecosystem. Update, Monday June 2, 2025. 2024 saw the Pixel 9 family launch earlier than expected. The range was announced on Aug 13, with the Pixel 9 and Pixel 9 Pro XL available on Aug 22 and the Pixel 9 Pro on Sept 4. Google could be set to launch the Pixel 10 family even earlier. Details on a potential date come from invites sent out by Google through its 'Pixel Superfans' program: '25 Superfans will get the chance to attend a 1h 30m event in London, SE1 1UN, on the 27th June at 2.30pm , where they will get hands-on with pre-release Pixel devices and features, get treated to themed goodies, and sit in on a one-off interview Q&A session with Googlers." While the specific devices are not mentioned, the Pixel 10 smartphones meet all the requirements and are on the horizon. There is, of course, no mention of any embargo around the event, but that has to be a consideration. Given the mention of pre-release hardware, this could be a very early tease of the handsets weeks before a larger media event. However, with the public release of the next version of Android 16 expected by the end of June, these pre-release units could easily be the early Pixel 10 devices running Android 16; a noteworthy event that could easily be the opening shot of an influencer-led campaign ahead of a July launch. Pixel 9 lifestyle image The Pixel 10 may be the keystone in the conversation. There is an expectation that the base model will retain the $799 price point that the Pixel 9 was on sale at. That's a price point where many of the so-called flagship killer smartphones sit; devices which promise an experience close to that of the more expensive and higher specced handsets, without the associated increase in price. Of course, some specifications will be trimmed back, but notably, Google is expected to keep using the Tensor G5 across the Pixel 10 family. There's no undercutting the formula with a derated processor. Google will also be hoping that its offer of seven years of Android updates and security patches will be accommodated by other manufacturers. It's becoming common to see six years announced with new handsets, so the support windows are moving in the right direction. What Google won't want to see is the loss of the flagship killer space. The Pixel 10 will balance the need for high specs to run generative AI and more complex programs, with a need to keep an affordable yet powerful phone available at the $799 price point. If the price of the Pixel 10 were to rise, that would risk the flagship killer's space. Unlike other Android manufacturers (perhaps excepting Samsung), Google has a totemic relationship with the consumers through the Pixel line-up. They are seen very much as "The Google Phone", and recognition from consumers is more towards the Google side of the street than the Android side. The moves that Google makes with the Pixel devices are seen as indicative of any phones that "run Google." The moves it makes with the Pixel tell the story not just of Pixel, but of Android. What stories are Google planning to tell with the Pixel 10 family, and how will that shape the respective markets when they are launched? The expected sticker price of $999 is an important one. Staying below a thousand dollars, while delivering a full-on flagship, is the role of the Pixel 10 Pro. Much as the Pixel 10 will be used to stop power creep from bleeding into price creep, Google will draw a line in the sand that no one will pass when selling premium devices. Google is expected to push the entry-level price of the Pixel 10 Pro XL up by $100 to $1199. I'm curious to see if this is a direct price increase or if it is accomplished by dropping the 128 GB storage option and starting at 256 GB. If this approach is taken, the price for the 256 GB model remains the same as the Pixel 10 Pro XL. We're here for the story, though, and the story is one that pushes the Pro XL higher up the pricing curve. It's giving tacit permission for manufacturers to create more separation and maximise the margins further up the portfolio. Curiously, the Pixel 10 Pro Fold is expected to see a price cut of $200, taking it down to $1599. That's still a hefty price for a phone, and I'm curious to see the offering that Google has and what compromises it has taken. It will be seen as an effort to bring down the expected price of a foldable, which will benefit many in the market. While the form factor has been around for some time, they still remain as smartphones for manufacturers to flex their innovation, rather than focus on mass market sales. There's no doubt that price plays a big part in that decision. Premium smartphones are expensive; adding in a "gee-whizz" feature such as a folding screen, and many will not want to take the risk. Bringing the price down reduces that risk by a small margin. The parts are still expensive, but the direction this market wants to go in is clear. No doubt the launch of the Pixel 10 family will touch Gogole's new hardware and lean heavily into Android 16 and the promise of the next-generation AI tools. However, the stroy underneath the story is just as interesting. Android is as much Google's as it is an Open Source project. It's the Pixel 10 that points out the direction that the Captain wants to take the ship. Jeremie Frimpong to Liverpool

Liverpool have signed Dutch attacking right-back Jeremie Frimpong from Bayer Leverkusen on a five-year deal. The Premier League champions activated his €35million (£29.6m; $40m) release clause, and the fee will be paid in three instalments over three years. As part of this summer's transfer coverage on The Athletic, in addition to breaking news, tactical analysis and in-depth reads, our Transfers TLDR series will bring you a quick guide to each of the key deals. Born in the Dutch city of Amsterdam in December 2000, Frimpong moved to England with his family at age seven. Within two years, he was scouted by Manchester City and Liverpool. Eventually signing for City, Frimpong went through their academy but with first-team opportunities limited, he moved to Celtic in summer 2019. That move paid off as he won a Scottish treble in his first season. More success would follow as a key player in Xabi Alonso's Bundesliga-winning Bayer Leverkusen side. Advertisement Frimpong was part of the Netherlands squad at the 2022 World Cup but had to wait until October 2023 for his first international appearance. Caoimhe O'Neill You will see versatility and speed. Expect to see defenders scrambling after him or trying to guess his next move, only to watch him dribble past in a flash. Frimpong is hungry to make things happen. He has tricks, flicks and plenty of end-product but we won't be watching a Trent Alexander-Arnold tribute act. The Dutchman will not be commanding from midfield and pinging passes out to the wingers from deep. When it comes to defending, expect fast recoveries. Caoimhe O'Neill Frimpong's arrival will require tweaks from head coach Arne Slot. Last season, Liverpool used Alexander-Arnold in build-up more regularly than as a marauding full-back, though he did invert into midfield. Frimpong is a direct threat who uses his pace and dribbling higher up the pitch. That could leave Liverpool vulnerable down their right flank. Instructing a midfielder to assist right-sided centre-back Ibrahima Konate is one solution to that. Frimpong could also be an alternate to Mohamed Salah on the right. He's got his blindspots defensively, but has the physical traits to adapt to the Premier League. Anantaajith Raghuraman Frimpong's fitness record is one of his biggest strengths. In the past three seasons, he has not missed a single match through injury. The only serious one he has had was a torn ligament in his right ankle in March 2022 that ruled him out for the rest of that season. Anantaajith Raghuraman Speed and joy seem to be two themes of Frimpong. Paul Harsley coached him at City's academy and described him as 'probably the fastest player' he has ever worked with. 'He was so versatile and if ever he was caught out of position, his speed would help him recover, and then flying forward he was also a massive asset,' Harsley told The Athletic. Caoimhe O'Neill Frimpong has joined Liverpool on a five-year contract after they met Leverkusen's £29.6million release clause. They will pay the fee in three instalments. That has a cash-flow impact at Anfield but doesn't materially change how the deal impacts their bottom line, either now or in the future. Liverpool's accounting period end is May 31, so none of this deal affects their 2024-25 figures. Assuming no change between now and the end of the deal, one month's worth of the fee will hit the club's 2030-31 accounts. Chris Weatherspoon Using estimated agent fees on the deal of 10 per cent, Frimpong's transfer fee will add £6.4million per season to Liverpool's amortisation costs to the end of 2029-30 (and then £0.5m the following year). Liverpool will also, obviously, foot the bill for Frimpong's wages. The size of that commitment is unknown but, as with any transfer, the total cost of this deal across its five-year term will go beyond that headline fee — estimated at £32.5m once agent fees are included. Advertisement For Leverkusen, the £29.6m fee is subject to a sell-on clause owed to Celtic. The Athletic reports that to be less than 30 per cent. As an example, were it 20 per cent of the proceeds above the £11.5m Leverkusen signed Frimpong for in January 2021, Celtic would receive £3.6m. Frimpong extended his initial four-and-a-half-year deal in October 2023, to the end of June 2028. His value in Leverkusen's books is below £3m so, even after deducting the money due to Celtic, based on our estimates, they should bank around £23m in profit. Chris Weatherspoon
