Victor Nunes and Muhidin Abubakar face off for UAE Warriors interim flyweight crown
After five years of waiting, Victor Nunes finally has the opportunity to win an MMA belt when he takes on Somali British fighter Muhidin Abubakar in the interim flyweight championship at the UAE Warriors 60 this weekend.
The Abu Dhabi promotion is staging their second back-to-back fight cards with Arabia versus Africa on Thursday and the international card on Friday, both at the Space 42 Arena in Abu Dhabi.
Nunes, 33 and who has lived in Abu Dhabi for the past seven years, arrives on the back of a 6-1 (win/loss) record in the promotion and 11-5 overall tally.
The Brazilian won his last three fights quite impressively, with a unanimous decision over Aaron Aby of Wales followed by two first round stoppages of Jordanian Nawras Abzakh and Genil Francisco of the Philippines.
'I'm very happy for this moment which I have been waiting for the last five years – to fight for a title in front of my family, friends and colleagues,' Nunes told The National at the pre-fight media day on Wednesday.
'I had a great camp for this fight and I'm more than ready to get this belt. Abu Dhabi is one of the best places to train and have a pre-fight camp in the best facilities and with so many of my colleagues around.'
With the title at stake, Nunes is confident ahead of the biggest fight night of his career.
'I have never been in a title fight, but I have been working hard to get there, and now that I have earned it, there's no stopping me from going on to get the belt,' he said.
'I don't know how tough my opponent is going to be. I can only know when I actually take him on. He has fought in many promotions and in different countries, but I have been working in all areas and more than ready for a win on the night.'
His opponent Abubakar's debut in Abu Dhabi ended in defeat to South African Luthando Biko back in September 2023.
That was his only loss, and he's since bounced back with six straight wins. The last two were in the UAE Warriors – a unanimous decision over South African Gift Walker and Chilean Alfredo Muaiad in round one.
Abubakar's overall record of 9-1 looks pretty good and the 26-year-old is equally confident of walking away with the interim championship.
'For me, it's another fight and another opponent. My preparations have been like any other, but I feel at the top of my game for a championship contest,' he said.
'I have proved that in my last two visits to Abu Dhabi. Obviously, I have earned this moment and I'm ready and confident to achieve what I have been working for.'
Aside from the main card, another interesting contest is the co-main event between Brazilian Vinicius Moreira and Canadian Tanner Boser in the 265lbs division that also includes ten other contests.
The interim title belt is a new addition to the promotion after existing belt holders moved on to bigger international events and institutions.
'The UFC is the biggest. They stand at the helm of the MMA world, and we have lost a few fighters to them,' Fouad Darwish, chief executive of Palms Sports, said.
'But I don't consider this loss. They have moved and we are very cognizant of where we stand. I'm not saying we compete with them.
'On the contrary, we like to be the funnel that sends fighters to them. It gives me pride and pleasure that many of our fighters are going there. So, we have lost people with titles.
'It was difficult for us to continue seeing titles being lost for those who would come and fight with us one or two fights and they leave. So, we had to create something that would create more time and give a twist for getting an undisputed belt.'
The action begins with the 13-fight Arabia versus Africa card, highlighted by the bantamweight contest between Abdul Hussein and Sami Yahia and the co-main fight of Islem Masraf and Diego Bandu.

At just 16, Anca Mateiu is chasing a dream few dare to imagine. Born in Romania and now rising through the ranks in UAE, her journey is driven by raw talent, relentless passion, and a fearless ambition to reach the very top of the golfing world. It all began when she was just three or four when her father placed a golf club, two sizes too big, into her tiny hands and encouraged her to give it a try. 'They were regular clubs, too big to handle, but I did my best to hit the ball. I felt a spark, and everything just took off from there,' she recalls. That first swing would mark the beginning of something special. 'At first, I played for my dad, because he was the one who got me into it,' she says. 'He was always there, patiently guiding me and making the game feel fun and exciting. I just wanted to make him proud. That meant everything to me.' That early start laid the foundation for everything Anca has achieved since. Today, she is the 2025 Ladies Club Champion at Emirates Golf Club and proudly represents the UAE National Team in prestigious events such as the Pan-Arab and GCC Golf Championships. 'Representing the UAE at those championships is something I'll never forget,' she says. 'Standing on the first tee in national colours gives you this rush. It makes all the training and hard work that we put in worth it.' Her journey also comes full circle with a victory close to home when she won the 2021 Romanian National Junior Girls Championship. It's a nod to her roots, and a powerful reminder of just how far she's come, both geographically and as an athlete. But it's her time in Dubai that has truly accelerated Anca's growth- both as a golfer and as a young woman with big dreams. Surrounded by world-class facilities, a vibrant golfing community, and elite competition, Anca has found the perfect environment to sharpen her skills and push her limits. The city's fast-paced energy mirrors her ambition, and it's here that her passion has evolved into purpose. 'It's been life-changing,' she says. 'Back in Romania, I didn't have access to the same level of facilities or playing opportunities and I was limited to a few months a year because of the weather. But here in Dubai, I can train year-round, compete regularly, and work with top coaches. It's completely changed how I see the game and what I believe I can achieve.' Anca trains across three premier courses — Emirates Golf Club (EGC), Jumeirah Golf Estates (JGE), and Dubai Hills — all while balancing a rigorous academic schedule at Kings' School Dubai. 'I won't lie, it's hard,' she admits. 'There are days I finish school, head straight to the course, practice until sunset, and then go home and catch up on homework. But it's worth it. You make time for what you love.' Though the demands are high, she remains grounded, a quality that mirrors her approach to the game itself. 'I try not to think too much on the course. I just take it one shot at a time and stay in the moment,' she explains. 'If I get ahead of myself, things don't happen the way I want them to. So I always focus on my routine and aim for the best possible outcome.' Mental composure is a key strength. In high-pressure situations, Anca has learned to trust her instincts and reset quickly. 'Even when things go wrong, a bad shot or a missed putt, I try not to get too emotional," she says. "Golf is like life: you can't control everything. But you can control how you respond. That's something I've really learned over time.' She credits her coaches, including Marion Duvernay, and the Emirates Golf Federation for helping her level up her game. Their support, along with that of her family, has given her the confidence to dream big. 'The EGF has backed me in ways I can't even explain,' she says. 'And General Abdullah Alhashmi has been incredible. I wouldn't be where I am without that kind of belief.' Looking ahead, Anca has her sights firmly set on the LET Access Tour - Europe's gateway to professional women's golf. 'I'd love to turn pro. It's been my dream for as long as I can remember,' she says. 'With the support from my coaches, the EGF, and my parents, I feel like I can really do this. I'm working towards being good enough, and hopefully, with a few invitations to play on the Access Tour, I'll get my chance.' College is still on the table, but Anca is clear-eyed about her priorities. 'If I'm not in college by 18, then I think that's the right time to really go for it,' she says. 'I know what I want. I want to play golf for the rest of my life.' And while her journey began in Romania, her present and likely her future lie in Dubai. 'More UAE right now,' she says when asked where her heart lies. 'It's hard to choose, but Dubai has given me so much. It feels like home.' To young girls across the Middle East looking to follow in her footsteps, Anca's message is practical but empowering. 'There's so much on offer in Dubai - amazing courses, top facilities. But you have to be serious. Put in the hours. Even if you improve one per cent every day, that adds up. Stay focused, and don't lose sight of why you started.' Just as important, she says, is the team around you. 'You need people who understand what you want from the game,' she says. 'Your family, your coaches - they're everything. When you lose or things don't go well, they're the ones who lift you back up. Without them, it's hard to keep going.' Department of Community Development launches Child Protection in Sport Policy
Abu Dhabi: The Department of Community Developmenthas introduced the Child Protection Policy in the Sports Entities with the aim of creating a safe and inclusive environment where children can thrive and enjoy sports free from harm. Developed in collaboration with the Abu Dhabi Early Childhood Authority (ECA), the Abu Dhabi Sports Council (ADSC), and the Family Care Authority (FCA), the policy aligns with Federal Law No (3) of 2016, known as Wadeema, and its executive regulations. The policy applies to all sports entities in Abu Dhabi, as well as to all workers and volunteers involved in sports activities outside educational institutions. To support the policy's implementation, the department will roll out a comprehensive awareness campaign. His Excellency Mohamed Helal Al Balooshi, Executive Director of the Community Engagement and Sports Sector at DCD, said: 'The Child Protection Policy in the Sports Entities reflects the department's commitment to promoting the welfare of children and ensuring their safety in all areas. It is an important step that promotes the healthy growth and development of children, in line with the vision of our leadership, which is keen to protect children and ensure their rights and safety. The policy focuses on enhancing awareness and community participation in protecting children by empowering sports entities, parents and workers in the sports sector to effectively assume their responsibilities. It also seeks to protect children participating in sports activities from any behaviour, conduct, or actions that violate their rights, harm their interests, or cause them physical or emotional harm. Additionally, the policy provides support for children in sports activities who may be at risk of abuse, neglect, or violence. The policy mandates that all employees in sports entities and facilities who interact directly with children must report any suspected or alleged cases of child abuse, neglect, or violence within the sports sector. It also outlines the roles and responsibilities of sports entities, professional athletes, volunteers, parents, and caregivers in addressing such cases. This approach aims to promote the wellbeing and safety of children in sports, foster positive behaviour, build healthy social relationships, uphold standards of sportsmanship, and create a safe and constructive environment for sports activities. The policy includes the development of legal frameworks to prevent anyone who poses a threat to children participating in sports activities, in addition to preventing them from joining any sports entity, work or other environment that allows them to deal with children. It also focuses on coordination with the competent authorities and concerned parties to ensure the protection of the rights of all children participating in sports activities. The Child Protection Policy in the Sports Entities prohibits all forms of child abuse, including physical, sexual, and psychological abuse, neglect, exploitation, bullying in any form, and any type of discrimination based on race, age, gender, nationality, religion, or developmental delays. The policy was developed through the collaborative efforts of DCD, ADSC, and FCA, along with various relevant partners in the health, society, sports and education sectors, including the ECA, the UAE Pro League, Abu Dhabi Department of Education and Knowledge (ADEK), the Ministry of Education, in addition to the Abu Dhabi Public Health Centre (ADPHC) and the Emirates Schools Establishment.
