Holy Buddha relics arrive in Vietnam for UN Wesak celebrations

HO CHI MINH CITY: Vietnam welcomed Buddha's sacred relics - a national treasure of India - on Friday (May 2), marking the first time the venerated artifacts have been brought to and enshrined in the country.
The precious artifacts were accompanied by India's Minister of Parliamentary Affairs and Minority Affairs Kiren Rijiju.
The Vietnam Buddhist Sangha (VBS) hosted the reception ceremony at the Tan Son Nhat International Airport in HCM City on the day, attended by Most Venerable Thich Trí Quang, Supreme Patriarch of the VBS Patronage Council alongside Most Venerable Thich Thien Nhon, Vice Supreme Patriarch, President of the VBS Executive Council, Minister of Ethnic and Religious Affairs Dao Ngọc Dung, and Permanent Vice Chairman of the HCM City People's Committee Duong Ngoc Hảa.
Following the airport reception, the relics were transported to the Vietnam Buddhist Academy in HCM City, the main venue for the upcoming 20th UN Day of Wesak Celebrations. From May 3-8, they will be enshrined at Thanh Tam Pagoda in Binh Chanh District for public viewing and veneration.
The relics are scheduled to travel to several significant Buddhist sites across Vietnam, including Ba Den Mountain National Tourist Area in the southern province of Tay Ninh, Quan Su Pagoda in Hanoi – the headquarters of the VBS, and Tam Chuc Pagoda in the northern province of Ha Nam.
The UN Wesak 2025, themed 'Unity and Inclusivity for Human Dignity: Buddhist Insights for World Peace and Sustainable Development,' will take place from May 6 to 8. Some 1,200 delegates from 85 countries and territories, including dozens of heads of states, are expected to attend the event.
Vietnam has hosted the UN Wesak celebrations three times before: in Hanoi in 2008, Ninh Binh Province in 2014, and Hanam Province in 2019. — VNA/VNS/ANN

'Operations of units at the border have been conducted carefully, calmly and based on an understanding of the situation to prevent losses on all sides, but at the same time, are ready to defend the country's sovereignty to the fullest extent if the situation is called for.' Cambodia's government did not immediately respond to a request for comment on the Thai military statement yesterday. Although the two neighbours have a historic rivalry, their governments enjoy friendly ties, partly due to the close relationship between their influential former leaders, Thailand's Thaksin Shinawatra and Cambodia's Hun Sen, whose daughter and son respectively are now the prime ministers in their countries. After yesterday's security meeting, Thai armed forces chief Songwit Noonpackdee said the military supported the government's approach to settling the dispute peacefully. Defence Minister Phumtham Wechayachai said that in a meeting on Thursday with his Cambodian counterpart, Thia Saya, they discussed avoiding violence and proceeding with caution instead. Cambodian troops deploy 12,000 soldiers near Chong Bok border: Source
PHNOM PENH: Cambodia has mobilised 12,000 troops to reinforce its presence along the Thai-Cambodian border in the Chong Bok area of Ubon Ratchathani province, a source from local security agencies said on Friday (June 6). According to the source, military personnel and heavy weaponry have been continuously deployed since tensions escalated between Thai and Cambodian forces at Ta Moan Thom Temple, located near Surin's Phanom Dong Rak district, in February. Following the initial conflict, Cambodia increased its military presence in Chong Bok, stationing over 10,000 troops and reinforcing its arsenal. However, after clashes in the area that resulted in the death of a Cambodian soldier, an additional 3,000 troops were deployed, bringing the total number of Cambodian forces in Chong Bok to 12,000. These troops are now spread across strategic locations, including Hill 745, Hill 641, and the Mom Bei (Tri Muk Pavilion) area. Indonesia may install permanent stairlift at Borobudur Temple: Minister
JAKARTA: The Indonesian government is still finalising a plan to install a permanent stairlift at Borobudur Temple in Magelang, Central Java, to facilitate visitors with special needs to access the World Heritage Site, Culture Minister Fadli Zon said on Thursday (June 5). A stairlift is a device designed to bring people up and down a stairway. A temporary stairlift was installed ahead of French President Emmanuel Macron's visit on May 29, which caused a heated debate in Indonesia. 'It was just a trial, so actually it has been planned for quite some time,' Fadli said on Thursday, as quoted by Antara news agency. 'This is part of an adaptation for inclusivity especially for those who need it, the seniors. There are bhikkhu [monks], senior visitors or disabled people.' Fadli said the stairlift would be permanent, adding that the temporary stairlift would be dismantled and replaced with a better structure. 'We will communicate the needs with those who have the expertise to probably make a tailor-made stairlift,' he said. 'The stairlift will not be destructive because it [would] just [be] attached to the railings.' Previously, the government insisted the stairlift was installed based on a request from the French government so that Macron could ascend Borobudur more quickly and easily. Despite all the preparations, Macron opted to ascend Borobudur on foot, reported on May 29. 'Borobudur Temple is about as high as a 12-storey building and the French president had limited time in his state visit,' Presidential Communication Office head Hasan Nasbi said on May 26, ahead of Macron's visit. However, Hasan said there were then suggestions for the stairlift to be made permanent at the temple. 'Initially the stairlift was temporary but then there were suggestions from several groups, such as the Buddhist community and cultural observers, for the stairlift to be made permanent,' he said on May 28, as quoted by Hasan said the suggestion would make the temple from the 8th century more inclusive, adding that several other World Heritage Sites already provided access for visitors with special needs. 'There is a lift at the Acropolis in Athens as well as at several historical sites in Vietnam,' he said. However, Hasan said the final decision would lie with the related ministry, the Cultural Heritage Council and Borobudur Temple area management. Whether the stairlift would be temporary or permanent would be decided through an official meeting and after considerations by the stakeholders. The case became viral after a video was widely circulated on social media, such as Facebook and X, showing the installation of metal plates and wooden planks on Borobudur Temple's stairs to make way for the lift. Netizens highlighted the activities, saying the stairlift was installed to allow Prabowo to reach the summit, without realising that Prabowo was scheduled to accompany Macron in a visit to the world's largest Buddhist temple. Other netizens, however, welcomed the installation of such mobility facilities, saying other World Heritage Sites had already installed lifts, escalators or ramps to allow disabled people in wheelchairs to also visit and enjoy the sites as an inclusivity drive.
