Peter Krykant: 'Beautiful, kind and courageous' drug policy campaigner found dead
A leading drug policy reform campaigner who championed safe consumption rooms has died at the age of 48.
Peter Krykant became a public figure in 2020 after setting up an unofficial facility in a minivan in response to Scotland's growing number of drug-related deaths.
The vehicle, which was later upgraded to a former ambulance, was taken around Glasgow in a bid to provide a clean space and support for addicts.
Mr Krykant, who was a recovering heroin addict and often spoke of his own battles with drugs, hoped the service would prevent overdoses and blood-borne viruses (BBV) among users.
The activist, who ran as an independent candidate in the 2021 Holyrood election, always called for dignity for those seeking help.
The Thistle - the UK's first safer drug consumption facility (SDCF) - opened in Glasgow in January.
Police Scotland said Mr Krykant's body was found by officers on Monday at a property in Graham Avenue, Larbert, following a report of concern for a person.
A force spokesperson added: "His next of kin has been informed. A post-mortem examination will be carried out in due course. The death is being treated as unexplained."
First Minister John Swinney said he was "shocked and saddened" to learn of Mr Krykant's death.
He added: "His powerful voice on drugs policy reform, in particular his tireless work to deliver safe consumption rooms, leaves an important legacy which will be remembered."

High-profile lawyer Aamer Anwar described Mr Krykant as "a one-man army, with a mission to save lives".
Mr Anwar represented Mr Krykant when he was arrested in 2020 in connection with the mobile overdose prevention centre. Charges were later dropped.
Mr Anwar said: "It was humbling to see him single-handedly fight to deliver the first safe consumption room for drugs in the UK.
"Since childhood he was driven by demons, but Peter was also a beautiful, kind and courageous man.
"He leaves behind his two boys whom he loved dearly and family and friends who will be utterly devastated.
"I hope with time they can find some comfort in that Peter will be at peace and his name will one day be remembered as a drugs campaigner decades ahead of his time."
Scottish Greens co-leader Patrick Harvie said his party was "deeply saddened" by the news.
He added: "Peter was a tireless campaigner for a fairer, more compassionate approach to handling drug misuse and addiction, and his campaigning has left such an important legacy in the UK's first safe consumption room in Glasgow.
"His advocacy for drug reform, and of course, his yellow van have no doubt saved countless lives in Scotland."

A violent carer who bit a chunk out of her friend's cheek in a 'brutal' nightclub attack, before kicking and spitting at a police officer during a separate incident, has been struck off after attempting to conceal her convictions. Danielle Gaffar, 24, from Dundee, was formerly close to victim Kyra-Louise Strachan, but the pair - both aged 18 at the time - fell out over her ex-boyfriend. In February 2019, Gaffar approached Ms Strachan while at Aura nightclub in Dundee and pounced on her from behind, causing the victim's head to be viciously slammed to the floor. She then felt teeth sinking into her cheek as Gaffar continued the attack, which left Ms Strachan requiring eight stitches and suffering permanent disfigurement. Gruesome images shared on social media after the attack showed part of Ms Strachan's cheek hanging off. Gaffar pleaded guilty and was led weeping to the cells after being handed a 16-month jail term at Dundee Sheriff Court, with Sheriff Tom Hughes rebuking the carer for her 'reprehensible' conduct. Despite the severity of her actions, Gaffer failed to disclose her conviction for the assault to both her employee and the Scottish Social Services Council (SSSC) when she registered to be a support worker in a care home last January, Edinburgh Live reported. Then six months later, Gaffer was again in trouble with the law when she became intoxicated while attending a house party and had to be prevented from driving away. In February 2019, Gaffar launched a vicious attack on Kyra-Louise Strachan while at Aura nightclub in Dundee, causing her victim to suffer permanent disfigurement Dundee Sheriff Court heard how after police were called, she kicked an officer on the head while being put in the back of a police van. Gaffar then later spat on the officer while being processed for failing to provide a breath test and being in control of an unregistered vehicle. She received a community payback order, including 186 hours of unpaid work and was banned from driving for 13 months. Despite this second conviction, Gaffar failed to tell the SSSC. In a decision issued yesterday, the regulator said Gaffar would be removed from the social care register. The SSSC said: 'You have been convicted of two violent criminal offences in the space of five years. This demonstrates a disregard for the law, lack of self-control and propensity to violence. 'Your actions resulted in physical, and likely emotional, harm to the victims.' It continued: 'The pattern of both violent and dishonest behaviour under consideration is indicative of an underlying values concern which is fundamentally incompatible with registration as a social service worker. 'You have failed to engage with the SSSC investigations into your fitness to practise, therefore your position is not known. 'Due to your lack of insight, remorse, and assurances in respect of future behaviour the SSSC cannot be assured that there is not an ongoing risk of repetition.' The report concluded: 'Your behaviour damages the reputation of the profession and needs to be marked as unacceptable.'

Tributes to a couple who died of 'carbon monoxide poisoning' while camping at their favourite place
The devastated parents of a couple who are believed to have died from carbon monoxide poisoning while camping have paid emotional tributes to the pair. Adele Tait, 47, and her partner Craig Will, 55, pitched their tent on the shores of Loch Awe in Argyll. Relatives grew concerned they had not heard from the couple and called the police to investigate. Officers made the tragic discovery last Saturday and have since said they are not treating the deaths as suspicious. It is understood the couple died from carbon monoxide poisoning from a camping stove. Their families have been left shattered by the news and Ms Tait's mother Anne said she was 'in pieces' at the deaths. She wrote on social media: 'I am devastated to be writing this, my eldest daughter Adele and her partner Craig have sadly passed away. 'The family are heartbroken at this time. You are my firstborn and the one that made me a mum. 'I am in pieces. Another part of my heart is in heaven.' In another emotional statement, she said you 'don't realise how much you miss the texts and messages at 6am until the person is no longer here'. Meanwhile, Mr Will's mother Sandra revealed her devastation at the loss. Paying tribute, she said: 'Craig and Adele you were our favourite 'hello' and our hardest 'goodbye'. 'In remembrance of your strength and resilience, your love for one another remains our greatest treasure. 'Our son had an incredible impact in his short time here. Though we part ways with tears, in our hearts you'll forever stay. Rest in peace dear Craig and Adele.' Other tributes have come in from those who knew the couple. One of Ms Tait's close friends said: 'Thank you for always being an amazing friend, always honest and caring.' Mr Will previously served in the Gordon Highlanders regiment, as well as the 1st Battalion of the Royal Regiment of Scotland. The couple are believed to have been living together in a cottage in the West Lothian village of Longridge. George McLaren, who described Mr Will and Ms Tait as his 'true friends', said they had died while on a camping trip in their 'favourite place' of the shores of Loch Awe. He added: 'I will miss them both more than they will ever know. 'My deepest heartfelt condolences go out to both families.' Other family members spoke of their shock at the deaths, and one said: 'I thank the universe every day for blessing us with someone like you Craig. 'We also lost his loving partner Adele, too. It brings us comfort knowing they're together in peace somewhere. 'We can see how much Craig and Adele were loved.' Others also told of how much they would miss the well-loved couple, and offered to help their grieving families in their time of need. A Police Scotland spokesman said: 'Around 4.25pm on June 7, a man and woman were found deceased within a tent on the east side of Loch Awe, Dalmally, Argyll and Bute. 'Their deaths are not being treated as suspicious. A report was submitted to the procurator fiscal.' Carbon monoxide is deadly but odourless, making it difficult to detect. Campers are warned never to take a gas stove, lantern or heater into a tent because of the dangers they can pose. Loch Awe is a popular destination for campers as it is Scotland's longest freshwater loch. Reports said the couple had not been in contact with loved ones since May 31. They were found in their tent the day after police received reports that they were missing, with officers alerted to concerns as to their welfare on June 6.
