City of Beckley to unveil historical marker as part of Founder's Day celebration
BECKLEY, WV (WVNS)- Each spring, Raleigh County residents have the opportunity to connect with Beckley's origins, which date all the way back to 1838. The annual Founder's Day event brings the past to life through historical re-enactors, traditional craft vendors, and guided tours of the historic Wildwood House.
This year's event will reveal a special connection between the city and the Civil War through a brand-new partnership between the City of Beckley and the Civil War Trails organization.'We are now officially on the Civil War Trail, and we're really excited about that,' said Parks and Recreation Director with the City of Beckley, Leslie Baker. 'We will be unveiling that and talking about the small part that Beckley had in the Civil War.'
Raleigh County Historical Society President, Rebecca Graham said the community's appreciation for seeing the history of their area brought to life is what keeps the event coming back year after year.
The Raleigh County Historical Society and City of Beckley Parks and Recreation Department will host this year's Founder's Day event on Saturday from 10:00 am to 2:00 pm at the historic Wildwood House Museum on South Kanawha Street across from the Memorial Baptist Church.

Researchers delve into history of Utah's ‘buffalo soldiers,' create trail recalling their presence
For perhaps the first time, Utah historians have organized much of the history surrounding the Black soldiers who served in Utah in the post-Civil War era to make sure it isn't forgotten. 'We didn't have any idea what we were getting ourselves into, and it's just mountains of information we've been able to bring to light because of this,' said Ian Wright, director of the Utah Cultural Site Stewardship Program, which is overseeing the effort. The research started in 2023 and the historians involved have created the Buffalo Soldier Heritage Trail linking several sites of note involving those first Black soldiers, known at the time as buffalo soldiers. Public events are set for Friday and Saturday at three of the sites, with signage geared to the general public to eventually be placed at the locations to promote interest in the history. 'A lot of folks know about the buffalo soldiers, but they don't usually connect them to Utah,' Wright said. Around a quarter of all African-American soldiers who served in the western United States in the period of westward U.S. settlement following the Civil War, though, came through the state, he said. As part of the initial public presentation of project findings, three simultaneous talks are scheduled for Friday at the Fort Douglas Military Museum in Salt Lake City, the Price Prehistoric Museum in Price and the Uintah County Heritage Museum in Vernal. On Saturday, driving tours will be held through three areas of note in the history of buffalo soldiers in Utah, starting in Salt Lake City, Price and Vernal. Participants must register online and organizers will send additional event details to those signing up to take part. Wright said some of the buffalo soldier history has been preserved in places like Carbon and Uintah counties and Fort Douglas, where some of the soldiers were stationed. 'But for the large part, it's kind of been overlooked a little bit here in Utah. One of our goals is to connect back into that larger story and bring this history to life, to help to safeguard that,' he said. 'The information's out there; it had just never kind of been pulled together in a way where people could see.' Two regiments of buffalo soldiers, the 24th Infantry at Fort Douglas and the 9th Calvary at Fort Duchesne, served in Utah, part of the U.S. military contingent assigned to the American West to protect settlers moving to the area. Wright said their presence was most pronounced in Utah from around 1878 to 1901. Well over 1,000 buffalo soldiers served in Utah, he estimates, with varied roles in Ford Douglas, Fort Duchesne, Carter Military Road, Gate and Nine Mile canyons, Moab, Helper, Price and Vernal, the key stops on the Buffalo Soldier Heritage Trail. While their official role was to protect settlers from attacks by the Native American population, the buffalo soldiers faced other challenges, notably discrimination from within the military ranks and from the communities they served. 'Not only is it a military story, it's an American story, it's a Western story, it's an African American story. It's just got so many neat nuances,' Wright said. Wright and his team, which operates under the umbrella of the Utah State Historic Preservation Office, have been working with the Sema Hadithi African American Heritage and Cultural Foundation, based in West Valley City. Reps from the University of Utah's American West Center, the U.S. Forest Service and the Bureau of Land Management have also helped. Much of the history they've organized and unearthed is available online and in an audiobook.

Secrets of a fortress: Inside Litchfield's GAR Hall
Jun. 5—, Minn. — Visitors to the Grand Army of the Republic Hall in this central Minnesota city are able to step back 140 years thanks to the decision of the Civil War veterans who built it. The deed for the property, turned over to what was then the village of Litchfield, spelled out that the building was to be preserved and used in a manner that maintained its original purpose — to honor Civil War veterans and preserve their history. "The building itself is the first GAR hall built in the state," Meeker County Museum Executive Director Danelle Erickson said in an interview for in 2022. Other Grand Army of the Republic posts formed in the state of Minnesota had gathered in homes or other available spaces. The Grand Army of the Republic was first organized by Union veterans of the Civil War in 1866 in Illinois. The states that the organization's purpose was to "maintain fellowship for the men who fought to preserve the Union and to help widows, orphans, and handicapped veterans." The Grand Army of the Republic conducted regular meetings and had thousands of posts throughout the United States, along with thousands and thousands of members, according to Erickson. There were close to 300 members of the Litchfield post throughout the years. The first Grand Army of the Republic post in Litchfield was formed in 1874 but died out with the death of the founder two years later. Another was formed in 1883, and many of the first meetings were in the county courthouse, according to another Members of Frank Daggett Post No. 35 decided in March 1885 that they needed their own building, and construction began in May of that year, using cream-colored brick from the local brickyard. The cornerstone was laid by Memorial Day, according to the online history. The building is described as "reminiscent of a small, medieval fortress" with features that include a central tower, turrets that project above the parapet wall and an inscribed stone with the raised letters "GAR" and the 1885 date. "It's very memorable from the outside, that fortress look. It just kind of shows a lot about the men that were here at the time," Erickson said in the 2022 interview. The bulk of the work was completed by October of 1885. One of the final things added was a "spectacular, 16-globe chandelier," according to another Today, the Meeker County Historical Society is the caretaker of the GAR Hall. The Meeker County Museum, built in 1961, is attached to the back of the building. Officially called "Meeker County Museum at the GAR Hall," it includes a pioneer cabin and exhibits that include artifacts relating to the history of the Dakota people, schools in Meeker County, Minnesotans serving in war, medicine and more. The two-story museum also houses a research library for genealogy enthusiasts. In the anteroom of the GAR Hall are Civil War artifacts, including cannons, literature and photos of important players in the war. The old wooden chairs upon which veterans sat during meetings are set up in the main hall as if ready for a meeting. The altar stands at the front of the room for use by a veteran leading the meeting. Photos of members line the walls, and the decor is original to the time. The Grand Army of the Republic Hall was added to the on May 21, 1975. The areas of significance for the designation are architecture and social/humanitarian. When Erickson became museum director, she learned that some local citizens were concerned the history of the GAR Hall was not being maintained in accordance with the deed. Historic documents, including the 1885 deed, were then reviewed to better understand the intentions of the original members who had deeded the building to the city. Erickson said the goal of all parties involved was the same — preserving the history but just with some "different views on how that was done." The result of their work was the creation of a handbook detailing the proper care and upkeep of the facility. The GAR Hall and museum, located at 308 N. Marshall Ave. in Litchfield, are open year-round for walk-in tours from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Tuesday through Friday and noon to 4 p.m. Saturdays. GAR Hall programming includes the second Thursday of every month, featuring various speakers throughout the year. "The Civil War, especially for American history, is pretty much one of the most written about book-wise," Erickson said in 2022. "Each year there are thousands of books, hundreds at least, on the Civil War. It's very much a topic that people are interested in, and continue to be interested in."
