Chennai-Colombo flight ‘thoroughly searched' upon arrival for suspect linked to Pahalgam attack
A flight from Chennai that arrived in Colombo on Saturday (May 3, 2025) was subjected to a detailed security search, following information from Indian authorities that a suspect linked to the Pahalgam terror attack could be among the travellers, Sri Lanka police said.
All passengers, including transit passengers, were thoroughly screened, and no one with the identity provided by Indian authorities was found, a top Sri Lankan official told The Hindu.
In a statement issued on Saturday Sri Lankan Airlines, the island's national carrier, said flight UL 122, which arrived in Colombo from Chennai at 11:59 hours, was subjected to 'a comprehensive security search' upon arrival.
'This was carried out in coordination with local authorities following an alert from the Chennai Area Control Centre regarding a suspect wanted in India who was believed to be on board,' the statement said, adding that the aircraft was 'thoroughly inspected and subsequently cleared' for further operations.

Video shows man pinned down at Newark airport, Indian consulate in touch with US authorities
The Indian Consulate in New York said they have gotten in touch with authorities in the United States after videos purportedly showing 'an Indian student' being handcuffed and pinned to the floor at the Newark airport came to light on Sunday night. Posted on X by an Indian-American entrepreneur, Kunal Jain, the videos and photographs showed an unidentified young individual handcuffed and crying at the airport. Jain, who tagged the Indian Embassy in Washington DC and External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar in his series of posts, said he was speaking in 'Haryanvi language and accent' and was pleading that the authorities were bent upon declaring him mentally unfit. Taking cognisance of this, the Indian Consulate in New York said on Monday evening, 'We have come across social media posts claiming that an Indian national is facing difficulties at Newark Liberty International Airport. We are in touch with local authorities in this regard.' The Consulate remains committed to the welfare of Indian nationals, they said. According to Jain, who said he witnessed the event firsthand, the young man appeared to be in distress and was crying as the Port Authority Police officers restrained him. There is no confirmation if the said individual has left Newark or has arrived in India, as per those aware of the matter. Authorities are presently trying to ascertain the date and time of the video, and the identity of the said individual, they said. Calling it a human tragedy, Jain wrote on X, 'I witnessed a young Indian student being deported from Newark Airport last night — handcuffed, crying, treated like a criminal. Exotic wildlife seized from flier
MUMBAI: The Customs officials on Monday arrested a flier who arrived at Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport (CSMIA) and found several exotic wildlife species in his baggage. The flier, an Indian national, was arriving from Bangkok. Customs officers said they intercepted him based on profiling. Upon questioning, the passenger exhibited signs of nervousness. On examining his baggage, they found that he was carrying several wildlife species with him. The seized wildlife included Chaco golden knee tarantula (grammostola pulchripes), tarantula (brachypelma), leucistic sugar glider (Petaurus braviceps), fire‑tailed sunbird (aethopyga ignicauda), purple throated sunbird (leptocoma sperata), crested finchbill (spizixos canifrons), honey bear (Potos flavus) and two Brazilian cherry head tortoises (chelonoidis carbonarius). The passenger was placed under arrest as per the provisions of the Customs Act, 1962. Further investigation is going on, said the official.
