Today's Alex Cullen tipped to land major TV gig after shock exit
It's been three months since it was announced that Today presenter Alex Cullen would be 'stepping down permanently' from his role on the Channel 9 breakfast show. The sports presenter, who joined the program in 2020, parted ways with the network after accepting a $50,000 gift from The Block billionaire Adrian Portelli.
While the father-of-three has been hosting corporate events and spending time with his family since leaving Today, it's rumoured that he may be making a return to TV very soon. According to news.com.au, Alex is a top contender to host a new show on Channel 7.

The publication claims that Seven is looking to launch an afternoon news program similar to The Daily Edition, which was hosted by Sally Obermeder and aired from 2013 to 2020. The network is reportedly concerned about the enormous success of Nine's game show Tipping Point, and hopes a 3pm to 5pm news show would assist the dwindling ratings of The Chase.
Alex is rumoured to screen-test with the network in the coming days, but he's not the only TV personality in the running. Nine's Belinda Russell, Seven news presenter Michael Usher, Weekend Sunrise host David Woiwod, and reporters Katrina Blowers and Blake Johnson are also reportedly being looked at.
Alex finished up with Nine in January after accepting a $50,000 gift from entrepreneur and billionaire Adrian Portelli, who became known as 'Mr Lambo' following his appearances on The Block.
Adrian pledged to give $50,000 to the first person who called him 'McLaren Man' on air in an attempt to change his nickname. He then posted a screenshot on Instagram of what appeared to be a bank transfer to an account with Alex's name after he took him up on the offer.
Alex was subsequently absent from screens for an entire week before it was announced that he would be leaving Today and the network.
'Nine has agreed with Today presenter and journalist, Alex Cullen, that he will finish with the network following a review into a recent incident,' a Nine spokesperson confirmed in a statement.
It was revealed in February that Danika Mason would be taking over Alex's role as sports presenter on Today.
Danika first joined Channel 9 in 2012 as an intern and has since been the network's NRL sideline sports reporter and Australian Open courtside reporter. She has also produced segments behind the scenes for Today sport and the Sunday Footy Show, and interviewed some of the biggest sporting legends in the world.

Nurses ‘secretly keep a bad baby name book' to make fun of parents' bizarre choices: ‘Unhinged'
Name and shame. NICU nurse Victoria has seen a lot in her career — including bad baby names. One night, when she was 'bored,' she posted a TikTok video asking others in her line of work to share the strangest monikers they'd ever heard. 'And I'm not talking, like, Naveah. I'm talking so unhinged it would send the Social Security office into a coma,' she captioned the video. The nurse knew of babies named Dracula, Messiah, Bronze and Gold. But other professionals chimed in with even wilder monikers. 'Some of the names people commented were borderline unbelievable,' Victoria admitted to TODAY. According to Victoria's comments section, there are babies named Arealtruemiracle — all one word — Sheep, Narwhal, Phelony and Blessica. Another nurse claimed to have had a child named Lucifer in her care at the same time a baby named Messiah was in the ward. There were also some interesting twin pairings. For example, Brock Lee and Callie Flower, Abracadabra and Alacazam, and Canon and Crystal Ball. Looking at triplets, one person claimed to know a threesome named Lincoln, Mercedes and Bentley. Meanwhile, another chimed in saying they knew of a new mom and dad who got very flavorful with their name choice — especially the ones who named their child Frijoles Guacamole. 'On my life not joking. We secretly keep a bad baby name book to remind us of all the crazy first and middle names,' the nurse, who met the child with the delicious name, declared. One can only hope most of these are jokes waiting to be used in a prank call. Unlike countries like Iceland, which requires names to be pre-approved or New Zealand, which bans names like 'Justice' and '4Real,' the United States is basically the Wild West of baby naming. However, some states have banned certain wonky monikers. cites 11 names that have been made illegal by the courts, including King, Queen, Jesus Christ, III and Santa Claus. Fortunately, for the children of America, these wild names are still rare. The classic Liam and Olivia were announced as the top baby names for 2024 — the sixth year in a row.

Willie Geist compares daughter leaving for college to driving car with 3 wheels
Willie Geist is excited for his daughter's latest milestone — despite the terror involved. The 50-year-old host of 'Sunday Today' took to a TODAY Father's Day celebration on June 13 to open up about the mixed emotions he's feeling as his 18-year-old daughter, Lucie Joy, graduates high school. And that, of course, means getting used to being a family of three at home, rather than a family of four. 'We just had a high school graduation a few days ago for Lucie Geist,' Geist said to a panel of Today colleagues that included Craig Melvin, Al Roker, Carson Daly and Peter Alexander. 'All the best stuff is still coming,' Geist added. Geist goes on to admit that he and his wife, Christina, have 'done the best we can' with their daughter and are thrilled for her as she embarks on this next chapter of her life. 'It's a strange mix of genuine excitement for her because you know what's ahead, and then moments where you're driving around and the bottom drops out of your stomach,' he explained. 'And you go, 'I can't believe that we've gotten her to this point,' he added. Of course, Lucie leaving the nest comes at a price for Geist — like driving a car with three wheels. 'We're a family of four. Somebody's taken a tire off the car and you've got to figure out how to drive the car on three wheels, you know?' he told his colleagues. Peter Alexander was quick to offer some perspective on how special of a time this can be for his second child, who will be getting much more attention once Lucie leaves. 'I don't know how he feels about that, but we're excited about it,' Geist joked of George. Willie and Christina Geist first met in 6th grade and have been married since 2003. Geist shared the couple's origin story in an Instagram tribute for his wife's 50th birthday. 'She was 11 when she caught my eye on the first day of Mr. Kaplan's 6th Grade homeroom class. A gawky boy in Jams and Chuck Taylors can dream… but not this big,' he wrote. Now more than two decades later, the couple share two kids — daughter Lucie, born in 2007, and son George, born in 2009. While talking about his daughter's recent graduation, Geist clarified that Lucie will be moving several hours away when she goes off to college. Some parents might use that as a reason to track their child's location remotely — but not Geist. In fact, Geist admitted that he and his wife will be doing away with location-tracking software — despite currently using it — once their daughter leaves. Geist argued that tracking his daughter's location would cause more trouble than reassurance. His comments came just a few days after he first opened up about his daughter graduating while co-hosting 'Today with Jenna & Friends' with Jenna Bush Hager. 'As any parent who has been through this — or maybe you're going through it right now — knows, the excitement at times becomes terror,' he said on June 10. Geist admitted that the week leading up to her graduation was so full of activities that her big milestone didn't hit him until he saw her walking across the stage. 'She was on stage speaking, which was an amazing thrill, and I think that's when it really hit me and Christina,' Geist shared. 'All of a sudden, she's ready to go,' he added. 'And you hope you've instilled in her all the values and the habits and the things she'll need to go out in the world.'
