Mumbai: DRI arrests Ghanaian smuggling cocaine worth Rs 6.7 crore in body
The directorate of revenue intelligence (DRI) officials recently arrested a Ghanaian national at the city airport smuggling cocaine worth 6.74 crore by concealing it inside his body in the form of capsules.
According to the DRI, based on an intelligence received that a Ghanaian national would be attempting to smuggle narcotics into India, agency officers, a few days ago, intercepted the foreigner passenger, who had arrived at Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International airport Mumbai from Liberia.
In inquiry, the suspect admitted to ingesting capsules containing cocaine to smuggle into India, following which he was admitted into a government hospital after duly securing permission from court.
The suspect passenger purged a total of 50 capsules containing 674 grams of cocaine, valued at Rs 6.74 crore in the illicit market, the central agency stated.
The recovered cocaine was seized under the NDPS Act, 1985, and the passenger was arrested under the provisions of the NDPS Act, 1985.

1 2 Jaipur: The state anti-corruption bureau (ACB) has sought governor Haribhau Badge's permission to prosecute Congress politician and former minister of cooperation Udailal Anjana in connection with alleged irregularities in the recruitment of managers for Gram Seva Cooperative Societies (GSS). The case centres on the appointment of over 1,100 individuals who, officials say, were hired in violation of prescribed norms during the 2022–23 recruitment process when Congress was in power. Many of those selected were reportedly unqualified. Sources said ACB has already received approval to investigate some officers from the cooperation department under provisions of the Prevention of Corruption Act. Anjana, a senior Congress functionary and former Lok Sabha MP, has been a prominent figure in state politics since the late 1980s. A three-time MLA from Nimbahera assembly seat, Anjana was also elected to Lok Sabha from the Chittorgarh seat after defeating former Union defence minister Jaswant Singh in the 1998 parliamentary elections. The case adds to Congress' recent troubles, following the former minister Mahesh Joshi's arrest by the Enforcement Directorate (ED) in April last year for his alleged involvement in the Rs 900-crore Jal Jeevan Mission scam. An ACB officer said on condition of anonymity that the previous govt decided to regularise appointments made before 2017. For recruitments made after that, the Cooperative Recruitment Board was tasked with the process. But according to officials, key checks were ignored. The cooperative dept later raised concerns about the process and requested detailed data of eligible candidates, leading to further scrutiny of appointments. After allegations emerged linking him to the recruitment scam, Anjana told TOI Sunday he had nothing to hide and was ready to face any inquiry. Accusing BJP govt of targeting him Anjana said the govt should first investigate its own cooperative minister — Gautam Kumar Dak — before probing others. "He (Dak) has been accused of shielding individuals involved in corruption worth crores by using his political influence," Anjana said. He also pointed to alleged irregularities in the distribution of tractors through the Rajkishan Custom Hiring Centre. The ACB has been investigating suspected irregularities in recruitment within the cooperative department for several months. In Feb 2025, the agency launched a probe into a suspected scam involving the unlawful regularisation of nearly 100 contractual employees in cooperative banks in rural parts of Jalore district. ACB teams reportedly seized documents indicating irregularities in the screening process conducted between 2021 and 2023.

Chandigarh: Senior IRS officer held in `45 lakh bribery case
Hours after their arrest, a Special CBI Court in Chandigarh on Sunday remanded IRS officer Amit Kumar Singal and his associate Harsh Kotak in 14-day judicial custody in a bribery case involving `45 lakh. A 2007-batch officer, Singal is currently posted as Additional Director General at the Directorate of Tax Payers Services. The CBI told the court that Singal and Kotak had allegedly demanded Rs 45 lakh from pizza chain owner and businessman Sanam Kapoor. While Kotak was arrested Saturday, Singal was taken into custody from his Delhi residence Sunday after the CBI obtained necessary authorisation. In its remand application, the CBI submitted that Singal acknowledged the `45 lakh bribe demand in a phone call with Kapoor and later accepted `25 lakh through Kotak. CBI said the bribe was sought in exchange for favourable treatment after Kapoor allegedly received a retaliatory tax notice in February 2025.

CBI arrests IRS officer, middleman for taking Rs 25L in bribe
1 2 3 Chandigarh: The CBI arrested a senior Indian Revenue Service (IRS) officer from Delhi and a middleman from Mohali for allegedly accepting a first instalment of a bribe of Rs 25 lakhs from the owner of a famous food chain for favouring him in taxation late on Saturday night. CBI sleuths conducted raids at the residences of the IRS officer in Mumbai, Mohali, and Delhi and claimed to have recovered cash and gold worth crores. The CBI produced both accused before the special CBI court, which sent them to judicial custody for 14 days. The accused are a 2007 batch IRS officer, Amit Kumar Singhal, a resident of Delhi, and Harsh Kotak, a resident of Mumbai. Amit Singhal is presently posted as additional director general, Directorate of Taxpayer Services, New Delhi. The complainant, Sanam Kapoor, owner of a food chain, alleged that the accused officer demanded Rs 45 lakhs for extending favourable treatment from the revenue/income tax department. The accused also allegedly threatened the complainant with legal action, the imposition of heavy penalties, and harassment in case of non-payment of bribe. Following his interrogation, IRS officer Amit Kumar was also taken into custody from Delhi. Later, the CBI team arrested Amit Singhal in Delhi.
