Protest after ICE raids in Los Angeles
US Immigration and Customs Enforcement (Ice)agents on Friday carried out a series of immigration sweeps, including two Home Depots, that sparked a tense standoff.
Approximately 500 demonstrators walked through streets near the federal building, displaying pro-immigrant banners and flags, following a rally organised by the Coalition for Humane Immigrant Rights (CHIRLA) on Los Angeles Street.
LAPD declared the protest an unlawful assembly at 7 pm, instructing participants to leave or face arrest.
Over 40 people arrested
Immigrant advocates confirmed to CNN that authorities detained a minimum of 45 individuals without warrants at seven different sites. The arrests occurred at two Home Depot locations, a fashion district establishment and a doughnut shop, according to Angelica Salas, executive director for the Coalition of Humane Immigrant Rights, or CHIRLA, at an afternoon press conference denouncing the activity.
"If our constitutional rights are violated, if our due process is violated, then anybody's rights can be violated," said Salas. She added, "If you think you are protected because you're not a immigration, I'm here to tell you what's happening in our country is unprecedented."
When protests occurred?
The protest erupted following an immigration enforcement incident at a San Diego eatery. Similarly, demonstrations occurred in Minneapolis when federal agents wearing tactical equipment entered a Latino community.
The officials clarified that their presence was related to a criminal investigation rather than immigration enforcement matters.
During the demonstration, some participants defaced the federal building with graffiti, prompting law enforcement to respond with smoke bombs, Los Angeles Times reported.
Why protest erupted?
A large crowd gathered near the Los Angeles Federal Building at 4 pm to protest against the enforcement action, condemning the crackdown.
The demonstrators called for the freedom of Service Employees International Union California President David Huerta. According to the labour union's statement, Huerta sustained injuries and was taken into custody while recording documentation of the raid.
'Hard-working people are being treated like criminals': Huerta
Huerta, aged 58, received medical attention at a hospital before being moved to the Metropolitan Detention Centre in central L.A. According to a spokesperson from SEIU, he was still in custody at 5.30 pm.
'What happened to me is not about me; This is about something much bigger,' he said in a statement from the hospital. 'This is about how we as a community stand together and resist the injustice that's happening. Hard-working people, and members of our family and our community, are being treated like criminals. We all collectively have to object to this madness because this is not justice.'
Huerta arrested for interfering with agents: US attorney
In a post on X, US Attorney Bill Essayli stated that Huerta had intentionally prevented federal agents from accessing a worksite where they were serving a warrant by obstructing their vehicle on Friday morning.
According to Essayli, Huerta was taken into custody for allegedly interfering with federal officers and is scheduled for arraignment on Monday.
"Federal agents were executing a lawful judicial warrant at a LA worksite this morning when David Huerta deliberately obstructed their access by blocking their vehicle. He was arrested for interfering with federal officers and will face arraignment in federal court on Monday," he said.
"Let me be clear: I don't care who you are—if you impede federal agents, you will be arrested and prosecuted. No one has the right to assault, obstruct, or interfere with federal authorities carrying out their duties," he added.
Protest caught on camera
In Los Angeles, onlookers and news teams recorded footage showing federal agents escorting individuals across a Home Depot car park, whilst confrontations occurred at additional detention locations.
KTLA aired overhead shots depicting agents outside a fashion district apparel shop, guiding detainees towards two large white vans stationed in the parking area. The detained persons had their hands bound behind them. The agents conducted body searches before placing them in the vehicles. The officers wore protective gear displaying the letters FBI, ICE and HSI (Homeland Security Investigations).
Armed personnel utilised yellow police cordons to maintain distance between the public and the enforcement activities.
'Do not sign anything. Do not tell them where you are from': Protestors
Protesters assembled outside Ambiance Apparel's warehouse, offering legal guidance to those detained within. They positioned themselves atop a long bed truck in the street, causing traffic disruptions on the busy thoroughfare.
"You are not alone," one said into a megaphone drowning out the sounds of the crowd. "Do not sign anything. Do not tell them where you are from."
Eighteen-year-old Katina Garcia peered through the glass, searching for her undocumented father who had arrived for his regular workday that morning, Ls Angeles Times reported.
"We never thought it would happen to us," she said, "I'm in disbelief."
Following a two-hour period, numerous federal agents in riot equipment arrived at Ambiance Apparel to address the growing crowd of over 100 people outside.
Their convoy of armoured vehicles announced their presence with blaring sirens. "Pigs," someone called out during the chaotic situation. "Fascists," came another voice.
Authorities uses 'pepper spray, smoke bombs and flash bangs' to disperse crowd
ICE agents emerged and encircled the entrances that demonstrators attempted to obstruct.
Several protesters hurled items towards the armed officers whilst shouting and recording the incident. Officers deployed pepper spray to scatter the assembled crowd.
Officers who were stationed inside the establishment escorted approximately twelve people out and loaded them into waiting vehicles, while additional personnel in protective equipment cordoned off the surrounding area.
Overhead video captured by KABC-TV depicted officers deploying smoke bombs or flash bangs onto the roadway to clear the gathering, enabling their departure in SUVs, vans and military-style transport vehicles.
Will respond, investigate and protect- regardless of person's legal status': Los Angeles Police Department
The LAPD and LA County Sheriff's Department issued announcements acknowledging their awareness of Friday's immigration enforcement activities. Both organisations clarified their stance of non-participation in civil immigration enforcement and confirmed they would not investigate anyone's immigration status.
"We want our residents to know that when they call for help, the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department will respond, investigate and protect everyone — regardless of a person's legal status," the department said in a statement.
'Cruel and chaotic.' LA Mayor Bass, Governor Newsom slam ICE raids
Union del Barrio and the Community Self-Defense Coalition planned additional protests Friday evening in downtown LA against raids and deportations that are "terrorizing people."
'Continued chaotic federal sweeps, across California, to meet an arbitrary arrest quota are as reckless as they are cruel,' Newsom said. 'Donald Trump's chaos is eroding trust, tearing families apart, and undermining the workers and industries that power America's economy.'
LAPD reported their officers were called to assist with a "large, unruly group" in downtown LA, though they had not officially declared an unlawful assembly by Friday evening.

YouTuber Khaby Lame reportedly arrested by ICE over alleged ‘illegal alien' accusations, internet reacts

In a plot twist nobody had on their 2025 bingo card, Khaby Lame, the TikTok king and the famous YouTuber with over 160 million followers has allegedly been arrested in the United States and thrown into ICE custody. That's right. The silent reaction king, famous for mocking absurd 'life hacks,' has now become the centre of an online storm. But before anyone starts hyperventilating, let us break down the drama. 🚨BREAKING: President Trump's ICE just officially arrested far-left TikToker, Khaby Lame, whom I reported as an illegal to the official DHS website, he's currently being held at the Henderson Detention Center and is in ICE CUSTODY. Khaby Lame has been arrested and detained by ICE. He is likely to be deported but is rich enough to stay anywhere he wants. Khaby Lame's alleged arrest sends internet into meltdown The chaos erupted when Bo Loudon, a self-proclaimed conservative commentator (and self-declared bestie of Barron Trump… yes, that Barron), went full keyboard warrior mode and dropped what he called a 'scoop.' According to Loudon, Khaby was arrested after he personally flagged him for being an 'illegal alien' and overstaying his visa. Meet far-left TikTok star "Khaby Lame."He's an ILLEGAL ALIEN!I've been working with the patriots at President Trump's DHS to make this was just ARRESTED in Vegas and is in ICE CUSTODY!To verify, go to ICE's Locator, type the A-number, and Senegal as country. In a series of wild posts on X (formerly Twitter), Loudon claimed the TikToker had 'evaded taxes,' was 'living on an invalid visa,' and had finally been 'nabbed in Las Vegas.' He even provided what he claimed was Khaby's A-Number and a screenshot from the ICE detainee locator site. U.S. Immigration Authorities Arrest TikTok Star Khaby LameAccording to American media, TikTok star Khaby Lame, who has over 162 million followers, was arrested by the U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) due to an expired per the official Department of… But even the official ICE website came up empty. Still, the rumour mill did not stop churning. Reality check: Is it all just noise? Despite the viral drama and far-right celebration online, there is currently no official confirmation from ICE or Khaby's reps. What we do know is this: Khaby Lame was born in Senegal, raised in Italy since he was one year old, and only became an Italian citizen in 2022. He has mostly lived in Italy—so why he would suddenly get arrested in the US is raising more questions than answers. 🚨BREAKING: Far-left ILLEGAL ALIEN TikToker Khaby Lame was just ARRESTED and is now in ICE custody under President Trump.I discovered he was an illegal who overstayed an invalid VISA, evaded taxes, and I personally took action to have him one is above the law! Also, let's not forget that Khaby went from being a laid-off factory worker during the pandemic to becoming a global icon with collaborations alongside Will Smith and Tom Cruise. So, yes—he is kinda a big deal. The internet reacts: Chaos, memes, and confusion While some took the claims at face value and started a cancel-fest, many fans quickly came to his defence, calling the allegations xenophobic and baseless. 'Why would ICE even arrest someone who lives in Italy?' one user questioned. Another wrote, 'Sounds like someone's desperate for clout.' TikTok fame doesn't grant immunity—just ask Khaby Lame and his expired visa. So is Khaby Lame actually in detention or just the target of a social media smear campaign? Until we get that official statement, the internet remains shook, divided, and very, very confused.

‘A huge mistake': JD Vance addresses the Musk-Trump feud; urges reconciliation

Vice President JD Vance weighed in on the growing rift between Elon Musk and former President Donald Trump, calling the feud a 'huge mistake' on Musk's part and expressing hope for reconciliation. 'Elon is entitled to his opinion,' Vance said during an interview with comedian Theo Von, which was released on Saturday. He added that he hopes the billionaire Tesla CEO 'comes back into the fold'. Also Read: 'Does Musk have access to Epstein files?' Kash Patel reacts to Tesla CEO's 'crazy' Trump claim Vance's appearance on Von's popular podcast, This Past Weekend w/ Theo Von, was recorded on Thursday, just as tensions flared between Trump and Musk. The two figures had exchanged sharp remarks on social media over Musk's criticism of the Trump-backed One Big Beautiful Bill Act, deepening the public fallout. On the podcast episode, the VP said, 'I'm not saying he has to agree with the bill or agree with everything that I'm saying.' He continued, 'I just think it's a huge mistake for the world's wealthiest man — I think one of the most transformational entrepreneurs ever — to be at war with the world's most powerful man, who I think is doing more to save the country than anybody in my lifetime,' as reported by The New York Post. Vance added, 'I just think you've got to have some respect for him and say, 'yeah, we don't have to agree on every issue.' But is this war actually in the interest of the country? I don't think so.' I know the president was getting a little frustrated, feeling like some of the criticisms were unfair coming from Elon. But I think it has been very restrained, because the president doesn't think that he needs to be in a blood feud with Elon Musk. And I actually think that if Elon chilled out a little bit everything would be fine.' Despite Musk suggesting that Trump should be impeached and replaced by Vance, the vice president made his stance clear. He stood firmly by the President's side, expressing unwavering support for him in an X post late Thursday night, even as the clash between Musk and Trump escalated publicly. He wrote, 'President Trump has done more than any person in my lifetime to earn the trust of the movement he leads. I'm proud to stand beside him.'

Indian students made up one in four international students in US in 2024: ICE report

Indian students accounted for nearly 27% of all international students in the United States in 2024, according to the latest report by US Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE). The report, titled SEVIS by the Numbers 2024, shows that 4.2 lakh Indian students were actively enrolled in the US, marking an 11.8% increase from 2023. This growth helped push the total number of foreign students in the US to 15.8 lakh — a 5.3% rise over the previous year. As per a report by Lubna Kably in the Times of India, the data comes from the Student and Exchange Visitor Information System (SEVIS), a tool used by the US Department of Homeland Security to track foreign students. F-1 visas are issued for academic programs, while M-1 visas are used for vocational training. Asia remained the largest source region, with nearly 11 lakh students — making up 72% of the total foreign student population. India and China were the two top source countries. While Indian student numbers rose sharply, China saw a slight decline of 0.25%, with 3.2 lakh students in 2024. The ICE report highlights that more than 90% of foreign students — about 14.3 lakh — were enrolled in higher education degree programs. California and New York were the top destinations for international students, hosting 2.37 lakh and 1.72 lakh students respectively. (Join our ETNRI WhatsApp channel for all the latest updates) However, new data for the March 2024 to March 2025 period suggests a sharp reversal in trend. Chris R. Glass, a professor at Boston College, studied SEVIS data and reported an 11.3% drop in total active international student records. The number fell from 11.53 lakh in March 2024 to 10.22 lakh in March 2025. In contrast, Chinese student numbers rose slightly to 2.63 lakh, an increase of 3.28%. Glass said, 'The current year-over-year decline is a reflection of an enrollment cycle that began under the Biden administration, so the March 2025 numbers have yet to reflect any impacts of policies implemented under the second Trump administration.' Experts point to several reasons for the recent fall in Indian student numbers — including the arbitrary termination of F-1 visas and SEVIS records, legal uncertainties, delays in consular services due to planned social media scrutiny rules, doubts about the continuation of the STEM-OPT program, and widespread layoffs in the US job market. These factors could push student numbers further down in 2026. Despite recent declines, Indian students continue to lead in the Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) fields. In 2024, nearly 1.65 lakh international students received a two-year STEM OPT extension after graduation. Of these, 48% were Indian students and 20.4% were Chinese. About 1.94 lakh international students in 2024 had employment authorization and were working in the US under the OPT program, a 21.1% rise from 2023. These figures reflect both the growing interest of Indian students in the US and the challenges they now face amid changing visa policies and immigration uncertainties.
