Glasgow's Paesano named among best pizzerias in Europe

Paesano Pizza made it onto the 50 Top Pizza guide's wider list of top European pizzerias for 2025, earning praise as an "excellent" spot. The guide, curated by Barbara Guerra, Luciano Pignataro and Albert Sapere, celebrates standout pizzerias across the continent, though Paesano did not break into the top 50. (Image: Newsquest) READ MORE: Much-loved pizza restaurant reveals opening date for third Glasgow venue In a statement, the curators said: "Because quality continues to grow nonstop, this year too we wanted to emphasise the growing value of the European evolution, by including the category 'excellent' to the guide. "About 150 pizzerias scattered around the Old Continent, where you can eat an excellent pizza, which are added to the 50 positions in the ranking.' Paesano currently operates three locations across Glasgow, with its newest restaurant opening earlier this year in Shawlands. When the Southside venue first opened, the Glasgow Times was granted an exclusive sneak peek inside the new spot. READ MORE: First look inside Glasgow's new Paesano Southside The newest branch of the authentic Neapolitan pizzeria chain officially opened on Pollokshaws Road on Wednesday, May 21, taking over the unit previously occupied by Di Maggio's. Paul Laing, general manager, told the Glasgow Times: "We're really excited. "We had a soft launch which went fantastically well, and from 11.30am on Wednesday, we're fully open to the public. "The response and anticipation in the local area have been great, to say the least. "Neighbours and other local businesses have all been incredibly supportive. "There's a real buzz around the area, and we're looking forward to getting started." Paul Laing (Image: Newsquest) Paesano, which first opened in 2015, has become a staple of Glasgow's dining scene, known for its wood-fired Neapolitan pizzas and minimalist menu of 10 core options and rotating specials. The pizzas are made with high-quality Italian ingredients and cooked in ovens crafted by artisans in Naples. The Shawlands branch marks the latest stage in a broader expansion plan. We previously reported that hospitality group DRG acquired the Paesano and Sugo brands in a deal reportedly worth eight figures, announcing intentions for major growth. READ MORE: Owners of Glasgow Paesano reveal ambitious plans for Shawlands opening (Image: Newsquest) Paul Laing believes the brand's reputation will help fuel its continued expansion. He said: "Paesano in Glasgow is synonymous with fantastic pizza, great quality, fresh ingredients. "We source only the best, we've got the best guys in the kitchen cooking the pizzas, so for me personally, it's a brand that doesn't have any limits. "You could take this to any city in the UK and I believe it would do really well."

Council decides on plans for flats in town near Glasgow

The application for a brownfield site at 82 to 84 Cross Arthurlie Street in Barrhead was submitted to East Renfrewshire Council by Glasgow-based developer AS Homes. The plans, which show a mixture of one and two-bedroom properties, have been given the green light subject to 17 conditions. READ NEXT: Greggs store closes temporarily - here's why One of the conditions is that all 12 flats must be for/occupied as social rented housing which is to be provided by a registered social landlord, in perpetuity. The vacant site, which is overgrown, extends from Cross Arthurlie Street on its east side to Henry Street on its west side. The buildings that were on site were approved to be demolished in 2007 and the site has been vacant/undeveloped since the buildings were demolished. As part of the decision, approval was also granted for a parking court containing ten spaces at the rear of the block, a bin store and cycle store as well as housing for a sprinkler storage tank and pump. Access to the parking court will be from Henry Street. Another condition of the approval is that parking courtyard shall not slope towards Henry Street unless drainage infrastructure is installed to prevent water issuing onto the public road. READ NEXT: Plans revealed for new takeaway near Glasgow One objection was received to the plans which raised concerns about neighbour notification not being carried out, overshadowing and the loss of light to a living room and a bathroom. The application's report of handling issued by East Renfrewshire Council stated: 'With regard to the objection that has been received the following comments are made. 'Notices to neighbours were not originally issued when the application was validated as a result of an administrative error. 'The notices to neighbours were subsequently issued dated April 22, 2025 and the requisite time period given for any representations to be submitted before determining the application.'
