Azeem Rafiq has accused a leading British newspaper of attempting to 'downplay racism' by defending Gary Ballance and suggesting that the English-Zimbabwean former cricketer had been 'cancelled' in the racism scandal that had rocked English cricket recently.
Pakistan-born English cricketer Azeem Rafiq had in September 2020 publicly aired his grievances regarding racism and bullying in Yorkshire, the leading County club that he had played for in a professional career spanning two decades.

Ballance, who had played a handful of matches for his native country Zimbabwe after representing England in 23 Tests between 2014 and 2017, was among the players accused of racist behavior at Yorkshire with the southpaw later admitting to the offence at a hearing.
The 35-year-old, who had retired from all forms of the game in 2023, is currently serving as assistant coach to the Zimbabwe team that is facing England in a one-off Test at Trent Bridge, Nottingham that got underway on Thursday.
Rafiq slams 'pathetic attempt' to portray Ballance as 'cancelled'
And two days before the Test got underway, The Telegraph's Nick Hoult wrote an article on the former middle-order batter headlined " English cricket cancelled Gary Ballance, this is what happened next".
'Implicated heavily in the Azeem Rafiq racism scandal, Ballance arguably lost more than any of the accused in that whole saga.
'Having departed England to rebuild his shattered life he returns to Trent Bridge as Zimbabwe's assistant coach,' read the caption of the post on The Telegraph's X account that carried a link to the piece.
Rafiq, who had the entire nation's attention fixed on him at the height of the racism row with the matter even reaching the parliament, hit back at the newspaper for what he felt was an attempt to portray Ballance as the victim in the saga.
'Another pathetic attempt by Nick Hoult & Telegraph to downplay racism,' the Karachi-born former cricketer wrote on X quoting the original post by The Telegraph.

Will the Rs. 500 note go out of circulation in March 2026? What government said on viral claim

The Centre debunked claims that the ₹500 currency note will be discontinued by next year, trying to calm the panic among the people caused by the claim. The panic over the future of currency notes began recently when a video on YouTube went viral over the past few days, claiming that the ₹500 notes will be phased out starting March 2026. The 12-minute-long video, uploaded on a channel named Capital TV and gaining more than five lakh views since June 2, triggered confusion and panic among people. The union government responded to the claims through the Press Information Bureau (PIB) fact-check unit, saying the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) has not made any such announcement. The Indian government's official fact-checking agency also advised people not to fall victim to any kind of misinformation and always verify any claims made. " ₹500 notes have NOT been discontinued and remain legal tender. Always verify news from official sources before believing or sharing it," PIB's post on social media platform X reads. The ₹500 notes currently in circulation were introduced after the government announced demonetisation of the old ₹500 and ₹1000 notes in November 2016. The current note is 66mm x 150mm and comes in stone grey colour. The back of it has a picture of the Red Fort, complying with the theme of Indian heritage sites. The current ₹500 notes continue to have their amount written in 17 languages, like all the other notes in circulation. These languages include English, Hindi, Assamese, Bengali, Gujarati, Kannada, Kashmiri, Konkani, Malayalam, Marathi, Nepali, Odia, Punjabi, Sanskrit, Tamil, Telugu, and Urdu. Prime Minister Narendra Modi had demonetised the previous ₹500 notes, along with the ₹1000 notes, in a televised address on November 8, 2016. The government had billed it as a measure to fight corruption in the country and address the issue of counterfeit banknotes. The news notes came into circulation a couple of days later. The RBI had also introduced the new ₹2,000 currency note during the demonetisation exercise. However, those notes were withdrawn from circulation in May 2023. Despite being withdrawn, the ₹2000 notes remain legal tender.

Uzbekistan, Jordan Qualify For 2026 FIFA World Cup; China Eliminated

Three additional Asian teams have secured their spots for the 2026 FIFA World Cup following the latest round of qualifiers. Uzbekistan and Jordan will make their tournament debuts, while South Korea has extended its streak to 11 consecutive appearances. Conversely, China has been eliminated with one match remaining. Uzbekistan clinched its place with a goalless draw against the United Arab Emirates in Group A. This result was sufficient for the Central Asian team, featuring Manchester City defender Abdukodir Khusanov and Roma forward Eldor Shomurodov, to become the fifth team to qualify for the tournament, joining Japan, New Zealand, Iran, and Argentina. In the same group, Qatar, the host of the 2022 World Cup, narrowly defeated 10-man Iran 1-0. Both Qatar and the UAE will advance to the playoffs, where two additional World Cup spots will be contested, according to Xinhua. In Group B, Jordan made history by qualifying for its first World Cup with a 3-0 victory over Oman. South Korea, a regular participant on the world stage, secured a 2-0 away win against Iraq to maintain its perfect run since 1986. Iraq will join the playoffs, while the final playoff spot from the group will be decided between Oman and Palestine, who face off in the final round. China's slim hopes were extinguished in Group C after a 1-0 defeat to Indonesia in Jakarta. Ole Romeny converted a penalty just before halftime to secure the win and send Indonesia to the playoff round, while China was left to reflect on another unsuccessful campaign. Bahrain also exited contention following a 2-0 loss to Saudi Arabia. In another match, Australia claimed a 1-0 victory over Japan in Perth, positioning itself strongly to secure a direct berth from the group. The Socceroos lead Saudi Arabia by three points and have a +8 goal difference advantage heading into the final round. The 2026 FIFA World Cup will be hosted by Canada, Mexico, and the United States from June 11 to July 19, with 48 teams competing across 48 venues. (With IANS Inputs)
