Illinois man sentenced for shooting victim in face during dinner break, prosecutors say
The Brief
Ahmad Steele, 38, of DeKalb, was sentenced to 45 years in prison for shooting a man in the face during a dinner break outside their West Chicago workplace in 2021.
The victim survived after undergoing five surgeries but later died in 2023 from an unrelated illness, according to prosecutors.
Steele was convicted of attempted first-degree murder and aggravated battery with a firearm and must serve 85% of his sentence before being eligible for parole.
DEKALB, Ill. - A DeKalb man has been sentenced to 45 years in prison for shooting another man in the face during a dinner break outside their workplace in West Chicago, according to the DuPage County State's Attorney.
What we know
Ahmad Steele, 38, was sentenced Wednesday following his March 21 conviction on one count of attempted first-degree murder and one count of aggravated battery with a firearm, prosecutors said.
The jury deliberated for about two hours before returning the guilty verdict.
The backstory
The charges stem from a shooting on Jan. 28, 2021, outside Mapei Corporation on Industrial Drive.
West Chicago police responded around 7:50 p.m. to a report of a man with a facial injury and found the victim walking in the building's parking lot with an apparent gunshot wound to his face.
The man was taken to a nearby hospital, where he underwent five surgeries to reconstruct his jaw. He died in 2023 from an unrelated illness, prosecutors said.
An investigation revealed the victim had been sitting in his vehicle during a dinner break when a Chevrolet Blazer parked nearby. The driver—later identified as Steele—got out carrying a shotgun, approached the driver's side of the victim's car and fired into it, prosecutors said.
Steele returned to his vehicle but came back a second time, raised the shotgun again, and then left the scene.
Charges Filed
On Feb. 6, 2021, Naperville police spotted the Blazer driving on Route 59 and pulled it over. Steele was taken into custody for driving with a revoked license.
He was later charged with attempted murder and aggravated battery on Feb. 11, 2021. He has remained in custody without bond at the DuPage County Jail since then.
What they're saying
"On a cold January evening, for no apparent reason at all, Ahmad Steele approached a man unknown to him as he sat in his car on dinner break, and shot him in the face with a shotgun," DuPage County State's Attorney Robert Berlin said. "While the motive for this extremely violent, unprovoked attack may never be known, we do know the physical and emotional pain Mr. Steele inflicted on an innocent man forever changed his life. The randomness of this horrific act of violence shook an entire community to its core and we are all thankful that Mr. Steele will more than likely spend what amounts to the rest of his life behind bars, away from society, where he will be unable to harm anyone ever again. I thank Assistant State's Attorneys Nick Catizone, Heather Misura and Kelsey Kerr for their efforts in holding Mr. Steele responsible for his actions."
What's next
Steele must serve 85% of his sentence before he is eligible for parole, prosecutors said.

Essex Boys killer Michael Steele released from jail
A triple murderer infamous for killing the so-called Essex Boys has been released from jail. Michael Steele, now 82, was jailed for life alongside Jack Whomes at the Old Bailey in 1998 for the gangland murders of Tony Tucker, 38, Pat Tate, 37, and Craig Rolfe, 26. The three drug dealers were ambushed and shot dead with a pump action shotgun while in a Range Rover parked in Rettendon, Essex, three years earlier. Steele, who has always denied the murders, has now been released from prison following a decision by the Parole Board, the Ministry of Justice (MoJ) confirmed. "Our thoughts remain with the family and friends of Craig Rolfe, Tony Tucker and Pat Tate," a spokesperson for the MoJ told the BBC. "This decision was made by the independent Parole Board after a thorough risk assessment. "Michael Steele will be on licence for the rest of his life, with strict conditions and intensive probation supervision." Steele's release comes about four years after that of Whomes, previously of Brockford, near Stowmarket, Suffolk, who was released in 2021. The Parole Board first said that Steele would be released on licence in February after a panel ruled imprisonment "no longer necessary for the protection of the public". This was temporarily blocked when Justice Secretary Shabana Mahmood asked for his release to be reconsidered, saying the decision was "legally irrational". But after a "thorough" risk assessment the Parole Board, which had previously been worried about the chances of him reoffending, decided to go ahead with his release. "He faces an immediate return to prison if he breaks the rules," the MoJ warned. The Essex Boys killings, as they became known, were carried out on a snowy December morning on isolated farmland near Chelmsford. Farmer Peter Theobald and his friend Ken Jiggins found the Range Rover parked on a little-known track and suspected the occupants were poachers. But upon further inspection it became clear the trio had been subjected to a brutal killing - the severity of their injuries leaving them only identifiable by their fingerprints. During Steele's trial in 1998, the court heard how the three victims had been ambushed in a row about drugs. Then aged 55, and from Great Bentley, near Colchester, he was found guilty of murder as well as conspiring to import drugs into the UK. His minimum prison term was set at 23 years, which expired in 2019. The case has since been endlessly examined and reconstructed in TV dramas, films, documentaries and books, each exploring its links to other high-profile homicides and the 1990s rave scene. A Sky Documentaries series in 2023 interviewed detectives involved with the 1995 case who were critical of the original police investigation. Former Met Police detective David McKelvey claimed "credible lines of investigation were not followed" and that the assassination was related to an armed robbery, not drug dealing. Essex Police previously said the case was "exhaustively examined" and there was no fresh evidence to dispute the original verdicts. Follow Essex news on BBC Sounds, Facebook, Instagram and X. Four charged after 38 dogs, 7 ferrets found inside Bethel home filled with feces, urine
Four people have been charged in Clermont County after dozens of dogs and several ferrets were found living in "squalid" conditions in a house earlier in May. The Clermont County Dog Warden announced that four Bethel residents – Terri Sprague, Christopher Davis, Vicki Miller and Anthony Miller – are facing animal cruelty charges after 38 dogs and seven ferrets were seized and impounded from Sprague's Campbell Lane home on May 5. The warden launched an investigation on May 2 after Deputy Dog Warden Sarah Steele came into possession of a dog whose fur was stained with urine and heavily matted, according to a criminal complaint. The dog had been picked up as a stray by a local resident, who then posted about it on social media in an attempt to locate its owner. Davis, who is Sprague's son, responded to the post, identifying himself as the owner. Steele contacted Davis over the phone and coordinated a time for her to take the dog to his mother's house, where he also lived. Steele went to the house and met with Sprague, who court documents say had "feces on her clothing and reeked ofurine." She also told Steele that she had 11 other dogs inside the house. More: 'Beyond disturbing': 11 more people indicted in 'animal crush videos' case Chief Dog Warden Tim Pappas wrote in the complaint that officials were able to obtain a search warrant, which they served on May 5, based on Steele's observations and interaction with Sprague. While executing the search warrant, 34 dogs − mostly Chinese Crested but including a mix of breeds and ages − were found confined to a single room. Seven ferrets were found in a cage. Steele described the conditions as "the worst I've ever seen." More: Thousands of Ohioans are attacked by dogs each year. How to avoid bites, protect yourself 'The smell of feces and urine was overpowering," Steele said in the release. "The floor was covered inches deep in feces and the dogs were matted in feces and urine. None of the animals had fresh food or water. Their bowls were even filled with feces.' Additionally, according to the complaint, the ammonia level due to the urine was eye-watering and made it difficult to breathe. Garbage, rotting food with bugs and clothing stacked close to the ceiling were also seen in most areas of the house. Sprague, Vicki Miller and Anthony Miller were all present while the search warrant was being served. Four additional dogs were found in another room that was occupied by both Millers, who are married, according to the release. The Clermont County Animal Shelter took possession of the animals after they were recovered by the wardens. The defendants lost possession of the animals when they failed to post bond to cover the cost of their care at the shelter. The court set that bond at $29,250 per month. All but one dog has since been adopted or placed in foster care, the release said. Sprague and Vicki Miller were arraigned on May 28, the release said. Sprague is facing 41 counts of cruelty to a companion animal, a first-degree misdemeanor, with her trial date set for June 26. Vicki Miller is facing four counts of cruelty to a companion animal and 34 counts of complicity, and her trial date is set for June 12 Davis and Anthony Miller are slated to be arraigned in Clermont County Municipal Court on June 4, with Davis facing one count of cruelty to a companion animal and 34 counts of complicity. Miller faces four counts of cruelty to a companion animal and 34 counts of complicity. Former RNC chair says deporting illegal immigrant is just like Middle East insurgents kidnapping Americans
Former RNC Chair and MSNBC analyst Michael Steele compared the U.S. government deporting an illegal immigrant to El Salvador to despotic regimes kidnapping Americans or journalists while abroad on Tuesday. During an MSNBC segment, Steele argued that the U.S. deporting illegal immigrant Kilmar Abrego Garcia from Maryland to the "Terrorism Confinement Center" in El Salvador earlier this year is similar to radical Islamic terrorists capturing Americans in the Middle East, or Russian President Vladimir Putin kidnapping journalists. "How is this different from when Putin grabs a journalist or some, you know, rogue group in the Middle East grabs an American, and we're sitting here fighting to try to get them back," he asked. Gop Senator Says Trump Admin Deporting Kilmar Abrego Garcia Was A 'Screw Up' "Our own government did this," he continued. "Our own government snatched him up and put him in harm's way and now refuses to do what it must do and should do to get him back home." Steele made the comments to Rep. Glenn Ivey, D-Md., who recently traveled to meet with the deported immigrant but was denied access to the prisoner by local government officials. Read On The Fox News App Ivey agreed with the former RNC chair's assessment that the U.S. is acting like Putin or Islamic extremist groups, prompting Steele to double down. "We're doing the exact same thing here in the U.S. now, with our own government. We're petitioning our government to stop seizing people and grabbing them off the street and putting them in foreign prisons." "Yeah," Ivey replied. Cnn's Scott Jennings Says Left 'In Love With The Worst People' During Clash Over Deported Alleged Ms-13 Member Steele is the latest pundit to engage in the debate over Abrego Garcia between the Democratic Party and Republicans. Democratic figures, like Sen. Chris Van Hollen, D-Md., have claimed that Abrego Garcia has been unjustly deported to the mega prison. Van Hollen previously said that it was "absolutely unjust and illegal to have this Marylander detained one more day in a notorious prison in El Salvador." He also traveled to the country to meet with Abrego Garcia, a meeting that was heavily criticized by the Trump administration. Though some government officials acknowledged in court that Abrego Garcia's deportation to the Central American country was an administrative error, high-level Trump administration officials say the illegal immigrant was correctly removed and that he's a member of the MS-13 gang. Click Here For More Coverage Of Media And Culture Mentioning the detained migrant's 2022 arrest, Department of Homeland Security Assistant Press Secretary Tricia McLaughlin recently declared, "Kilmar Abrego Garcia is an MS-13 gang member, illegal alien from El Salvador, and suspected human trafficker. The facts reveal he was pulled over with eight individuals in a car on an admitted three-day journey from Texas to Maryland with no luggage." She continued, "The facts speak for themselves, and they reek of human trafficking. The media's sympathetic narrative about this criminal illegal gang member has completely fallen apart. We hear far too much about the gang members and criminals' false sob stories and not enough about their victims." Both a federal district court and the U.S. Supreme Court have ordered the Trump administration to "facilitate" Abrego Garcia's release and return to the U.S. for proper deportation proceedings. Attorney General Pam Bondi said that Abrego Garcia would not be allowed back into the U.S. unless El Salvador were to decide otherwise. "He is not coming back to our country," she said. In response to Steele's claims, White House spokesperson Abigail Jackson told Fox News Digital, "Michael Steele is suffering from a severe case of Trump Derangement Syndrome and should apologize to all the innocent people he just insulted by comparing them to a terrorist illegal immigrant, human-trafficker, and wife-beater who had no legal right to be in the United States."Original article source: Former RNC chair says deporting illegal immigrant is just like Middle East insurgents kidnapping Americans
