Sudden cancellation of Istinsakh private screening causes controversy
The screening of the much-anticipated Egyptian film Istinsakh, starring Sameh Hussein, was abruptly cancelled just moments before its private screening on Monday evening, causing controversy among the cinema industry and audiences.
The cancellation of the private screening at a cinema in one of the malls in the New Cairo area raised questions and speculations about the reasons behind the decision.
Many people in Egypt's film industry and social media users claimed that the Egyptian Censorship Authority intervened to block the screening "due to certain controversial scenes in the film."
Scriptwriter and head of the Egyptian Censorship Board Abdel Rahim Kamel stated that the delay "is purely administrative" and unrelated to the film's content.
He denied that the cancellation of the private screening was related to censorship issues, saying that the filmmakers had submitted a request for a screening permit and signed it with the Censorship Authority after official working hours.
Per his statement, this caused a one-day delay, and the Egyptian Censorship Board would grant the permit the following day.
It's worth adding that concerns linked to Censorship are additionally emphasized by the continuous postponements of the release of The Atheist (El-Molhid), initially slated for 2022.
The most recent postponement, in August 2024, stirred yet another controversy. The film has not been released since.
Prior to Kamel's statement, Sameh Hussein, who stars in the film, took to his Facebook page to apologize to fans and the guests who were planning to attend the private screening.
He stated that the postponement was due to circumstances beyond the control of the film's production team.
"To everyone coming to the private screening of Istinsakh today, I sincerely apologize. The screening was postponed due to reasons beyond our control. Thank you, and your understanding means a lot to me," he wrote.
Hussein garnered significant attention during Ramadan for his popular programme, Qatayef.
The programme offered educational content, focusing on human values and ethical concepts and delivering positive messages that promote self-awareness.
The programme's success helped elevate Hussein's public profile and even attracted President Abdel-Fattah El-Sisi's attention.
During the annual Iftar banquet hosted by the Armed Forces in mid-March, while calling for a convention to discuss the future of the film and TV industry in Egypt, El-Sisi praised the programme and Hussein and stressed the importance of constructive and beneficial media.
Istinsakh is a thriller that explores the complex relationship between humans and technology. The film focuses on the impact of artificial intelligence on people's daily lives, examining the challenges and consequences associated with the widespread use of this technology in various aspects of life.
The film has yet to be released across Egyptian cinemas on 9 April.

Egypt condemns Israel's decision to establish 22 settlements in West Bank
A Palestinian woman reacts in front of Israeli forces as Israeli machineries demolish a house, near Hebron in the Israeli-occupied West Bank November 25, 2020. REUTERS/Mussa Qawasma CAIRO – 30 May 2025: Egypt has issued a strong condemnation of the Israeli occupation's decision to establish 22 new settlements in the occupied West Bank. This move is seen by Cairo as a grave violation of international law and relevant United Nations resolutions, further undermining the prospects for a just and lasting peace. The Egyptian Ministry of Foreign Affairs stated that this decision represents a significant escalation and a blatant disregard for international legitimacy. It warned that such actions exacerbate tensions, fuel further violence, and undermine efforts to achieve a two-state solution, which Egypt firmly believes is the only viable path to resolving the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. Egypt reiterated its unwavering support for the legitimate rights of the Palestinian people, including their right to establish an independent and sovereign state on their national soil, with East Jerusalem as its capital. Cairo called on the international community, particularly the UN Security Council, to take immediate and decisive action to halt Israel's settlement expansion policies and to ensure the implementation of international resolutions aimed at achieving a just and comprehensive peace. The statement emphasized that the establishment and expansion of Israeli settlements in the occupied Palestinian territories are illegal under international law and constitute a major obstacle to any meaningful peace negotiations. Egypt called for an immediate cessation of all settlement activities and urged a return to direct negotiations between the Israeli and Palestinian sides to reach a final and comprehensive settlement based on internationally recognized parameters.

Al-Mashat Interview Panel for "Women Lead for Executives" Program at NTA
Israa Farhan Dr. Rania Al-Mashat, Minister of Planning, Economic Development, and International Cooperation, chaired one of the interview panels on Thursday for applicants to the 'Women Lead for Executives' program, organized by the National Training Academy (NTA) in partnership with the Ministry. This initiative is part of national efforts to qualify women for leadership roles and promote their economic, social, and political empowerment. Dr. Al-Mashat emphasized the importance of the 'Women Lead for Executives' program, which is one of the distinguished training programs provided by the NTA in cooperation with the Ministry of Planning, Economic Development, and International Cooperation. The program targets women in executive positions across various institutions, ranging in age from 22 to 50. She noted that with every round of interviews, she witnesses the advancement in the caliber of applicants and their eagerness to acquire the skills that will enable them to contribute to the prosperity and progress of our beloved nation. The Minister noted that Egyptian women have received significant attention under the leadership of H.E. President Abdel Fattah El-Sisi, President of the Republic. This has been reflected in the launch of the National Strategy for the Empowerment of Egyptian Women 2030 and the measures that have enabled women to hold leadership positions that were previously inaccessible. She added that empowering women economically, socially, and politically does not only benefit women themselves, but yields positive results across all aspects of life in Egypt. She further explained that women's empowerment is a key component of the state's efforts to invest in human capital and develop the skills of young men and women, enhancing their ability to assume leadership positions. The state is working to integrate gender equality and women's economic and social empowerment across all development plans. As such, women's empowerment has become a core component of the economic and social development plan, as well as various strategies and programs being implemented in cooperation with bilateral and multilateral development partners. Dr. Al-Mashat added: 'Empowering women economically, socially, and politically is a significant responsibility. Women are required to constantly prove their competence and capability to hold such positions. In addition, they bear a major responsibility in encouraging more women and girls to enter various fields of work, thereby increasing women's participation in the labor market.' Dr. Rasha Ragheb, Executive Director of the NTA, welcomed Dr. Rania Al-Mashat upon her arrival at the Academy headquarters in Giza Governorate. Dr. Al-Mashat and Dr. Ragheb toured the training sessions taking place under the Support for Improvement in Governance and Management (SIGMA) program. This program is part of the effective partnership between the NTA, the Ministry of Planning, Economic Development, and International Cooperation, the European Union, and the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD). The Minister took the opportunity to motivate the participants in the program, stressing the importance of the partnership between Egypt and the OECD.
