Antrim ease relegation fears by hammering Laois

BBC News09-03-2025

Antrim took a potentially decisive step to retaining their Division 1B status in the Allianz Hurling League by hammering fellow strugglers Laois 4-22 to 0-21 at a sunny Corrigan Park. Defeat in their final game would have ensured the drop to Division Two for the Saffrons but instead Laois now need the unlikely prospect of two home wins over Carlow and Dublin to relegate Davy Fitzgerald's side. On the basis of Laois' performance in Belfast, that turn of events looks extremely unlikely. While it was a strong team performance by Antrim, James McNaughton's display stood out as he notched exactly half of their total by scoring 2-11.However, the Saffrons had stars all over the pitch with Eoghan Campbell impressing in his more advanced role as youngster Cormac McKeown, Gerard Walsh, Conor Johnston and Joe Maskey were among others to impress. Laois never looked like getting back into the contest but Antrim keeper Ryan Elliott still made three superb saves - including a late magnificent stop to turn a Mark Dowling piledriver over the bar. Antrim needed to make a fast start and that's exactly what happened as two Walsh points and a McNaughton brace moved them into a 0-6 to 0-1 lead before the Loughgiel man blasted in the first of his two goals. Laois briefly threatened to get back in touch as they cut the margin to 1-6 to 0-4 but the Saffrons regained control to move 2-12 to 0-7 up with Campbell's unselfish pass setting up Johnston to fire past Cathal McDunne. By half-time, Antrim's lead was 2-15 to 0-8 and while Laois were going to the benefit of a slight breeze in the second period, the game was already beyond them. After trailing by 13 at the break, Laois never got closer than nine in arrears in the second half. That was when Aaron Dunphy hit his eighth point in the 65th minute to cut Antrim's lead to 2-20 to 0-17 but the home side side finished with a flourish as McNaughton hit his second goal before Keelan Molloy added a further major.

Why it's time to reduce the size of Casement Park and finally get some shovels in the ground

Lee Costello At the weekend, Antrim's season officially came to a close following yet another humiliating defeat, this time at the hands of Wexford. This year, the Saffrons have suffered relegation to Division Four, a first round defeat in the Ulster Championship and a dismal Tailteann Cup where they were ripped apart by Westmeath, Limerick and finally the Model County.

Five-goal Wexford knock Antrim out of Tailteann Cup

Antrim's season ended in dismal fashion as they crashed out of the Tailteann Cup with a 5-23 to 2-21 defeat by Wexford in the preliminary quarter-finals. Having narrowly earned a spot in the prelims as the third best of the third-placed teams in the round-robin stage, Andy McEntee's side hoped to stage another stirring run through the knockout rounds after back-to-back semi-final appearances in 2023 and they were well beaten in Wexford Park as they were put to the sword by the Model County's full-forward line of Sean Nolan (2-3), Ben Brosnan (1-2) and Jack Higgins (0-3).Goals from Nolan and Brosnan, and a couple of Darragh Brooks two-pointers, helped Wexford establish a commanding 2-14 to 0-7 lead at the break. And John Hegarty's side pulled clear after the restart and led by 19 points when Nolan struck his second goal to put the Leinster county 3-20 to 0-10 up To Antrim's credit, they refused to give up. After Mark Rossiter raised the home side's fourth green flag, quickfire goals by Patrick Finnegan and Dominic McEnhill and three two-pointers helped them reduce the deficit to eight points. However, substitute Robbie Brooks added a fifth goal for Wexford to bring the curtain down on a disappointing year for Antrim, who were also relegated from Division who qualified for the quarter-finals by topping their group, are the sole Ulster representation left in this year's Tailteann Cup.

Antrim know that they are facing a major challenge to reach Croke Park in Tailteann Cup quest

If Antrim are to return to Croke Park, they will have to do it the hard way, beginning with Sunday's Tailteann Cup preliminary Quarter-Final trip to Wexford Park (1.00pm). Their eight-point win over London in Newry proved to be enough to claim one of the three places on offer for third-place finishers in the group phase, with Leitrim missing out at the expense of New York, who are parachuted in at this, the preliminary last-eight stage.
