Theatre as Protest, Poetry, and Power: Inside XPRESSION 2025

A highlight of the day was the seminar by Prof Sanjoy Mukhopadhyay, titled 'Ritwik Ghatak: Cinema as Protest, Cinema as Poetry'. The session offered rich insights into Ghatak's life and work, illustrating how his films were both political and profoundly poetic.
The day concluded with Manto Ke Afsane, a Hindi production by Shapno Ekhon (New Delhi). The play wove together several of Saadat Hasan Manto's bold and deeply human short stories, using sharp monologues and excerpts from his own writings. It was raw, unapologetic, and deeply impactful.
'Every play at XPRESSION 2025 was chosen not just for its artistic value but to reflect the many faces of our society,' said Souravi Ray, spokesperson and actor, Shudrka Hyderabad Shilpitirtha Trust. 'From land rights to marginalised voices, from reinterpretations of classics to multilingual explorations, the festival proved that theatre remains one of the most powerful mediums to tell stories that truly matter,' she added.
The final day featured two major performances. The first was KOLAJ, a multilingual collage of six plays by Badal Sircar, performed in Hindi, Bengali, Telugu, and English. Directed by Swapan Mondal, the play brought together scenes from Uddyogporbo, Pagla Ghora, Michil, Bhoma, Khat Mat Kring, and Spartacus. Rather than replicate Sircar's original style, the team gave it a fresh, contemporary interpretation while preserving his fearless political voice.
This was followed by a thought-provoking conversation with renowned critic and editor Samik Bandyopadhyay, who reflected on Sircar's life, theatre philosophy, and lasting contribution to Indian drama.

When Rekha's new look made Jaya Bachchan cry at a famous Bollywood wedding, biographer reveals

Tired of too many ads? Remove Ads Rekha's Entrance That Stopped the Show The Mystery of the Sindoor and the Silent Interaction Jaya Bachchan's Quiet Reaction and Rekha's Clarification Unspoken Boundaries and a Final Goodbye on Screen The late 1970s and early 1980s marked an unforgettable phase in Hindi cinema—an age defined not only by timeless films and soulful music but also by high-voltage drama, iconic personalities, and moments that left a permanent imprint on the industry's collective memory. Among these legendary instances was the wedding of celebrated actors Rishi Kapoor and Neetu Singh, held on January 22, 1980. Their transition from on-screen romance to an off-screen union attracted a galaxy of stars to the grand event, held at RK Studios. While names like Amitabh Bachchan and Jaya Bachchan were part of the glittering guest list, it was Rekha's unanticipated arrival that completely shifted the 1980, Rekha was already an established and adored figure in Bollywood. But her appearance at the Kapoor wedding became the evening's focal point. Draped in an elegant white saree, a striking red bindi on her forehead, and sindoor prominently applied in the parting of her hair, Rekha walked in with immense poise. As soon as she stepped into the venue, cameras that were focused on the bride and groom instinctively turned toward her. She moved confidently to the centre of the reception area in the RK Studios garden. Her graceful demeanor and striking appearance stirred whispers among guests and photographers alike, who were taken aback by what many perceived to be bridal look led to intense speculation. Many wondered aloud whether she had secretly gotten married. Author Yasser Usman, in his biography Rekha: The Untold Story, documented this moment vividly, describing how her sindoor-streaked hairline dominated the whispers and murmurs that filled the chilly Mumbai night. The tension escalated when she approached Amitabh Bachchan, who was deep in conversation with director Manmohan Desai. Although their exchange was brief and seemingly innocuous, the moment was electrified by the weight of past rumours linking the two stars romantically. Despite the formality of their words, their proximity in such a charged environment made it one of the night's most talked-about the evening unfolded, what added further depth to the drama was Jaya Bachchan's subdued reaction. According to Stardust magazine, Jaya maintained her composure for most of the night but eventually lowered her head as tears welled up in her eyes—a moment of silent vulnerability amidst the grandeur. Later, Rekha addressed the speculation in an interview with Hindustan Times, stating that she had come directly from a film shoot and had forgotten to remove the sindoor and mangalsutra. She dismissed the buzz casually, remarking that the traditional adornments actually looked good on later, during a conversation on the Meri Saheli podcast, film expert Hanif Zaveri revealed a lesser-known follow-up. He stated that Jaya Bachchan had once invited Rekha for lunch, a meeting that Big B did not attend. The interaction was civil, but Jaya eventually made it clear where things stood, reportedly telling Rekha firmly that Amitabh belonged to her and always their film Silsila, which also starred Jaya, Rekha and Amitabh never appeared together in another movie. That film, and that night, became symbolic endpoints to one of Bollywood's most enigmatic chapters.

Aruna Irani reveals she battled breast cancer twice, refused chemo for work: ‘How would I shoot if I lose hair'

Veteran actor Aruna Irani recently opened up about a major health scare from the past. She revealed that she was diagnosed with breast cancer twice, both times choosing to battle the disease in private. Aruna said the first diagnosis came after she fell unwell while working, which later turned out to be cancer. Speaking to Lehren, Aruna recalled how she sensed something was wrong while on a shoot. "Aise hi ek din shooting kar rahi thi, pata nahi mujhe kaise pata laga par maine bola 'Mujhe kuch lag raha hai' (One day, I was shooting as usual. I don't know how, but I just felt something and said, 'I feel like something's wrong')," she said. Upon consulting a doctor, she was told the lump was minor. However, she insisted on having it removed immediately. Although doctors recommended chemotherapy, the actor declined, fearing it would affect her appearance and impact her acting career. "Then the doctor said you will have to take a pill, and I chose that as I was working. How would I shoot if I lose my hair?" she said. Aruna Irani's cancer returned in 2020, right before the COVID-19 pandemic. This time, she decided to follow the doctor's advice and undergo chemotherapy. 'Meri hi galti thi, as pehle maine chemotherapy nahi lee this (It was my fault because I did not opt for chemotherapy the first time). This time around, I took it,' she shared. She said that by then, chemotherapy had become more advanced. Although Aruna experienced some hair loss, it grew back with time. 'Still, you lose a bit of your hair, but woh jaldi aa bhi jaate hai (it grows back quickly)," she added. In addition to her battle with cancer, Aruna was diagnosed with diabetes at 60. At one point, doctors even told her that her kidneys had failed. Aruna Irani made her acting debut at a young age in the 1961 film Ganga Jumna. Later, she appeared in the 1962 film Anpadh. She has acted in more than 500 films in Hindi, Kannada, Marathi and Gujarati.
