[Listen] Tshwane SAPS academy rape: Police captain to apply for bail
A police captain accused of raping a trainee at the Tshwane SAPS academy is scheduled to make his second appearance at the Pretoria Central Magistrate's Court for a bail application today.
Pretoria Rekord reports that Independent Police Investigative Directorate (Ipid) spokesperson Lizzy Suping said the officer was arrested by the directorate last Wednesday.
She said the 20-year-old trainee was walking with her platoon members to their sleeping quarters when she was called to the captain's office, allegedly by him.
The door was then reportedly locked, by the police captain, and Suping said he blackmailed the trainee into sleeping with him.
'He told her that if she did not sleep with him, he would write a misconduct letter regarding an incident that allegedly happened in April, where the police captain was accusing the trainee of failing to salute him.'
Suping said the suspect remains in police custody until his court appearance.
No one is above the law – minister
Police Minister Senzo Mchunu strongly condemned the sexual assault, describing it as a gross violation of the rights that police are entrusted to protect.
'We welcome the swift removal and subsequent arrest of the instructor. This alleged act is not only criminal in nature, but it is a disgraceful abuse of authority and a gross violation of the trust placed in those who are meant to shape and guide the next generation of police officers. To prey on a young recruit who has chosen to serve our nation through the SAPS is both reprehensible and inexcusable,' he said.
The Family Violence, Child Protection and Sexual Offences Unit ensured that the victim received the necessary medical care and ongoing emotional and psychological support services.
Mchunu said such actions not only harm victims, but also undermine the work the police service collectively does.
'This incident stands in stark contrast to the values and ethics we expect of our officers. It undermines the integrity of the police service and the tireless work of the thousands of officers who serve with honour every day.
'Ipid has been tasked with the matter, and we urge them to leave no stone unturned in ensuring that justice is served. We call for swift internal processes to be followed. The perpetrator must be brought to book, and let it be a clear and resounding message – no one is above the law,' Mchunu said.

A man was sentenced to life imprisonment after murdering his partner in early May 2025. The Free State High Court handed down the sentence to Abel Serame Mathige (39), who was found guilty of murdering his partner, 51-year-old Anna Motaung, after assaulting her. She later succumbed to her injuries at Boitumelo Regional Hospital. Police responded to a report about a patient who passed away following an alleged assault by their partner. Upon arrival, the police were escorted to the body of the deceased, identified as Motaung, who had been declared dead by the hospital. A 57-year-old man allegedly murdered her partner at an automotive dealership in Mthatha on Saturday, 31 May 2025. According to a police statement, the deceased went to the dealership, where her partner is an employee at. The two lovebirds got into a heated argument where the suspect allegedly assaulted the victim and took her to a hospital. Initially, the suspect said that thugs assaulted her lover near the dealership. The police statement mentioned, 'The suspect visited the victim in the hospital, bringing her refreshments. The victim subsequently became sick and ultimately died at approximately 13:55 that same day.' The postmortem results are said to reveal the cause of the victim's death. The police arrested the suspect on Friday, 6 June 2025. A manhunt has been launched after the dead bodies of a couple were discovered at a residence in Sekonye village, Limpopo. A worried family member went to the residence where her relative was after she could not reach him on his phone. Upon arriving, she discovered the lifeless body of her relative and his 34-year-old partner. Initial investigations reveal that both the victims had sustained gunshot wounds. Additionally, a firearm, believed to have been used in carrying out the murder, was found at the scene. 'The motive behind the tragedy remains unclear; however, domestic violence cannot be ruled out as a possible factor,' read the statement. A case of murder and an inquest has been opened while investigations continue. Police officer arrested in connection with the kidnapping of 19-year-old Kamogelo Baukudi
A 42-year-old police sergeant has been detained following the kidnapping of Kamogelo Baukudi (pictured) last Thursday morning. The Free State police have confirmed that a police sergeant has been detained in connection with the disappearance of 19-year-old Kamogelo Baukudi. According to national police spokesperson Brigadier Athlenda Mathe, the SAPS had initially reported that people impersonating police had kidnapped the teenager on Thursday, 5 June. Mathe said after further investigation, Free State police uncovered that the white Toyota Hilux GD6 is SAPS property, and a 42-year-old policeman was subsequently arrested. "The SAPS had initially reported that fake cops had kidnapped Kamogelo Baukudi. Upon further investigation a Sergeant has been arrested. This is highly disappointing and unacceptable," Mathe stated.
