Messi's 'winning spirit' surprising: Inter Miami's Mascherano

ATLANTA: Inter Miami coach Javier Mascherano admitted he is surprised at Lionel Messi's desire to win after the MLS side shocked Porto at the Club World Cup on Thursday.
Veteran playmaker Messi curled home a fine free-kick in a man-of-the-match performance at the Mercedes-Benz Stadium in Atlanta, the winning goal in Miami's 2-1 Group A victory over their Portuguese opponents.
Mascherano said his Argentine compatriot's competitive spirit at 37 was more surprising to him than the eight-time Ballon d'Or winner's quality.
"Beyond his goal... he's a player who shows us how to compete, his hunger, his desire to continue competing at whatever level it is," Mascherano told reporters.
"In a footballing sense, what else is there to say? He's the best player that has played this sport in its history, but what is surprising is his will to win.
"Today, even in the last minutes, tired, with a knock, he kept helping the team in any way he could, in attack, in defence, to get the result...
"We know having him gives us an advantage, but above all, through his contagious spirit, the winning spirit that he has."
Many expected Porto to beat Inter Miami but the American side recorded a first ever victory in a competitive match for an MLS team against European opposition and the first shock at the Club World Cup.
"I think that we understood that in football there are obviously hierarchies, and we were facing against a team at a high level, with international players," said Mascherano.
"But we were convinced that if we did what we had to do, if we had a plan, if we supported each other, if we were together, but above all, if we dared to play, we could compete."
Samu Aghehowa netted a first-half penalty for Porto but Telasco Segovia and Messi's strikes after the break earned Inter Miami victory which puts them level on four points with Palmeiras at the top of the group.
"What I told them (at half-time) was... to raise their spirits, because we had clearly showed we could compete, and that we had reached a moment where I didn't care about the result," added Mascherano.

Real Madrid confirm Mbappe's release from US hospital after stomach bug scare

MIAMI, June 20 — Real Madrid superstar Kylian Mbappe has been released from hospital in the United States after suffering a stomach bug, the Spanish giants said yesterday. Mbappe, who is in the USA at the Club World Cup, had what the club called 'an acute case of gastroenteritis' and was taken in for tests and treatment. 'Our player Kylian Mbappe was discharged from hospital this afternoon and has returned to the Real Madrid training camp,' Los Blancos said in a statement. 'Mbappe will continue with specific medical treatment and will gradually return to the team's activities,' they added. French striker Mbappe missed his team's Club World Cup opener against Al-Hilal on Wednesday, a 1-1 draw in Xabi Alonso's first game at the helm. Alonso said on Tuesday the 26-year-old forward had been 'feeling a little better' after illness in the run up to the match in Miami. Madrid B-team player Gonzalo Garcia, 21, started in Mbappe's stead and opened the scoring for Real Madrid against their Saudi Arabian opponents. Madrid's second match in Group H is on Sunday June 22 against Mexican side Pachuca in Charlotte. Mbappe finished as the European Golden Shoe winner in his first season at Real Madrid with 31 goals in La Liga, but Los Blancos finished the season without a major trophy. — AFP

Soccer-In-form Kolo Muani wants to stay at Juventus after Club World Cup

Kolo Muani, who arrived at the club from Paris Saint Germain on a short-term deal in January, scored two goals as Juventus hammered Al-Ain 5-0 on Wednesday, taking his tally to five goals in his last six matches for the Italian club. "Honestly, I feel very good here," the 26-year-old told Mediaset after the Group G match in Washington D.C. "I can play well and score goals. I am happy, I hope to stay." General manager Damien Comolli told reporters last week that Juventus had discussed another loan with PSG when negotiating an extension to Kolo Muani's existing deal for the Club World Cup. "I'm optimistic that we can come to an agreement with PSG regarding a loan for the entire 25-26 season," he said. "Paris Saint Germain have certainly not closed the door to a loan, and they know the player wants to stay with us." Juventus coach Igor Tudor's optimistic response to Wednesday's victory might have been tempered by the knowledge that the two best performers in the game are only at the club on deals which expire after the tournament. Portuguese winger Francisco Conceicao, who is on loan from Porto, also grabbed a brace of goals after terrorising the Al-Ain defence from both flanks at Audi Field. Tudor has used the 22-year-old sparingly since taking over from Thiago Motta in March, suggesting Juventus might not be ready to trigger the 30 million euros ($34.57 million) buyout clause in his contract and keep him in Turin. In the short term, however, Tudor has both players at his disposal for the Club World Cup, which continues for Juventus with games against Wydad Casablanca on Sunday and Manchester City next Thursday. Kolo Muani for one is certainly buying into the Croatian's programme. "He trusts me, he wants to attack and he wants to keep the defence strong," he told the post-match press conference. "I'm very happy to play with my teammates, we are very happy and we play very strong." ($1 = 0.8679 euros) (Reporting by Nick Mulvenney, editing by Peter Rutherford)

Premier League fines Man City £1m for repeated kick-off delays

LONDON, June 20 — Manchester City have been fined more than £1 million (RM5.73 million) by the Premier League over delayed kick-offs in nine matches last season. Premier League officials announced yesterday that Pep Guardiola's side had breached rules around kick-off and restart times between October and February. The longest delay was two minutes and 24 seconds before the resumption of the Manchester derby at Old Trafford in December. The Premier League said City had accepted the breaches and apologised for the incidents. The fines total £1.08 million ($1.45 million). 'Rules relating to kick-offs and restarts help ensure the organisation of the competition is set at the highest possible professional standard and provides certainty to fans and participating clubs,' a Premier League statement said. 'It also ensures the broadcast of every Premier League match is kept to schedule.' It is not the first time City have been in trouble for their tardy kick-offs. The club were fined more than £2 million last year for 22 breaches of the kick-off and restart rules. Guardiola's men finished third in the Premier League last season as their four-year reign as champions came to an end. City, who also suffered a shock FA Cup final defeat against Crystal Palace, are currently playing in the Club World Cup in the United States. — AFP
