VVCE Open Day in Mysuru on May 11
Vidyavardhaka College of Engineering (VVCE), Mysuru, will organise 'Open Day–2025' at Sri H. Kempegowda Indoor Sports Complex on its campus on May 11 at 10:30 a.m. The event is open to all PU students and their families.
B. Sadashive Gowda, principal of VVCE, said the event will feature an exhibition of projects, career guidance sessions, and interaction with CET and industry experts. The primary objective is to help students explore different engineering domains, understand the kind of projects students develop at VVCE, and get guidance on career options and engineering branches.
Mr. Gowda emphasised that many students make minor but critical errors during CET document verification and option entry, which may lead to admission in unintended colleges and branches. He added that experts will guide students during the Open Day to address this issue.
The experts attending the event include Sundar K.S., associate vice-president of Infosys, Mysuru; Rahul Deshpande, co-founder and director of PravegaSemi, Bengaluru; and Uday Shankar, a CET official.
These guests will interact with students and parents, offering valuable insights into current industry expectations, CET counselling procedures, and how to avoid common mistakes during admissions.

Maharashtra's CAP admission process now has four rounds, new rules announced
In an overhaul of the centralised admission process (CAP) for professional courses, the Maharashtra Higher and Technical Education Department has announced that the number of CAP rounds will be increased from three to four starting from the upcoming academic session. The changes come ahead of the announcement of the common entrance test (CET) results, conducted by the state's CET cell for admissions to degree programs. Higher and Technical Education Minister Chandrakant Patil confirmed the development, stating that a formal government resolution (GR) will be issued soon. 'These reforms are similar to the changes made in the polytechnic admission process and are aimed at making the system more efficient and student-friendly,' Patil said. This decision is intended to improve flexibility and transparency in the admission process. The department has clarified that the revised rules will be implemented during the upcoming academic session. A highlight of the new structure is the auto-freezing of seats. If a candidate is allotted a college listed among their first three preferences in the second round or among the top six in the third round, the seat will be automatically frozen. Once frozen, the student must take admission to that institution and cannot participate in further rounds. Candidates will also have the chance to modify their preferences before each of the second, third, and fourth CAP rounds. This ensures that students are provided with flexibility while also maintaining fairness in seat allocation. The new policy also brings more transparency and merit-based selection into the management quota admissions. For the first time, colleges will be required to announce complete details of the available management quota seats on the official website. In terms of fees, institutions will be permitted to charge up to three times the regular tuition fee for management quota seats. For NRI quota seats, the fee can be as high as five times the standard rate. NRI candidates must submit a certificate from the income tax department, and their admission will be governed by the Foster Parent Act. The new rules also define a clear process for admission cancellations. Students wishing to cancel their admission must submit a request online. Once cancelled, the student forfeits any claim to that seat, which will then be made available in subsequent rounds. If the cancellation is completed before the specified deadline, a refund will be issued after deducting ₹1,000 from the total fee. No refunds will be granted for cancellations made after the deadline. Colleges are required to publish the list of eligible candidates, the merit list, and a detailed admission schedule on their official websites. Commenting on the reforms, Patil said, 'These changes are in line with those implemented in the polytechnic admission process and are aimed at enhancing efficiency and making the system more student-friendly.'

Cut-offs drop in 3rd list; CET results of BMS & BBA may cause seat shift
Mumbai: While some of the leading colleges have closed admissions for their popular courses, such as BA Psychology, after the second list, the cut-offs for other courses, even in other subject combinations for BA, have seen a drop in the third list — some are steep when compared to the first list. Many colleges said they did not get enough applications for BSc to even put out a third list. Even as the Mumbai University (MU) extended the deadline for degree college admissions till June 15 and CET results of BBA/BMS/BCA were out, colleges are now worried about horizontal mobility of students to other courses in the same college. At Jai Hind College, BA saw the sharpest fall, dropping from 92.17% from the first list to 80% in the third, but the psychology seats are already full after the second list. Overall, the third merit list reflected a moderate decline across most courses. BBI registered the largest drop among self-financed programmes, slipping by 3.5 points from 90% to 86.5%. Principal Vijay Dabholkar said their new courses in international accounting and actuarial science and quantitative finance were full. "Many students these days are following social media influencers who are promoting new-age, skill-oriented courses, and therefore there is a huge demand for them. Also, now that the CET results for BBA, BMS is out, many students will leave their existing seats to go for them," he said. Karuna Gokarn, principal, St Xavier's College, said they did not have a third list for most of their courses, except BA, for the subject combinations other than psychology. She said the situation in science is grim. It could not only be because of the new professional courses, but also due to undergraduate science courses in institutes such as IISER and IITs picking up and students preferring it over leading autonomous colleges. At Podar College, commerce programmes remained largely stable — BCom financial markets declined slightly from 94.5% to 92%, and BAF, which opened at a high 95.6%, closed at 93.4%. At Ruia College, third merit list for BA course closed at 84%. Most colleges are expecting cut-offs to improve in the fourth and fifth round. The university issued a fresh schedule on Thursday to include students who were left out from the previous process.
