Google's Sundar Pichai takes a veiled dig at fellow Indian-American CEO Satya Nadella for his ‘dance' comment

Hindustan Times18-05-2025

Google CEO Sundar Pichai just took a veiled dig at his counterpart in Microsoft, Satya Nadella. During a podcast appearance with David Friedberg, Pichai opened up about the AI race, his major competitors, and then took a lighthearted dig at his fellow Indian-American executive Satya Nadella for his 2023 remarks on making Google 'dance'.
Gemini, formerly known as Bard, is a generative artificial intelligence chatbot developed by Google. It is one of several AI chatbots in a market where several companies are vying for the top spot.
Friedberg, an American entrepreneur, asked Google's Sundar Pichai on his views about competition on the All-In Podcast.
'Your competitors out there have active founders. OpenAI has Sam [Altman], xAI has Musk, Meta has Zuckerberg, and Microsoft has Satya [Nadella]. Are you willing to share your perspectives on those four competitors - both the companies and the leaders?' the CEO of Google was asked.
Pichai kept his answer diplomatic, praising his rivals. However, before wrapping up, he couldn't resist a dig at Satya Nadella.
'Obviously, by definition, it's a very impressive group. I think you're talking about some of the best companies, some of the best entrepreneurs. It shows how much progress we are going to see, because you're basically talking about many people who are working hard to drive that progress,' replied Sundar Pichai.
'Look, each of them, they're different people. I am fortunate to know all of them,' he added, before saying: 'I think maybe only one of them has invited me to a dance, not the others.'
His remark earned a puzzled look from podcast host Friedberg even as Pichai continued to talk about the time he spent discussing future technologies with Elon Musk.
Nadella, who, like Pichai, is an India-born techie who rose through the ranks to lead one of the world's largest tech companies, never actually asked his counterpart at Google to a dance. Pichai was likely referring to Nadella's 2023 remarks about making Google dance amid the AI race.
In 2023, Satya Nadella welcomed the announcement of AI-aided search engine Bing.
'Today's announcement is all about rethinking the largest software category there is: search,' Nadella said in an interview with The Verge.
'At the end of the day, [Google is] the 800-pound gorilla in this,' Nadella said. 'I hope that, with our innovation, they will definitely want to come out and show that they can dance. And I want people to know that we made them dance.'

Tanzania procures black gram seeds from UAS Dharwad for cultivation

Dharwad: In a significant development, the African nation of Tanzania procured 24 tonnes of black gram (udad) seeds from the University of Agricultural Sciences Dharwad (UASD) and placed an order for 50 tonnes for the next year. Dr TR Shashidhar, special officer, Seeds Unit, UASD, told TOI that the varsity's seed system has also attracted agricultural scientists from Malawi, Nepal, and other countries. "Due to good pre-monsoon rain, we started the sale of seeds earlier this year as compared to previous years. We exported our seeds to other districts and also to seed corporations of Maharashtra, Odisha, Goa, Punjab, Madhya Pradesh, Uttar Pradesh, Andhra Pradesh, and other states. We are providing breeder and foundation seeds to govt agencies so that they can produce seeds further. Sales of green gram and black gram increased this year. Last year, we had only 65 quintals of green gram due to a loss in production. Seeing the situation, we stocked 855 quintals of green gram and already sold 800 quintals this year. We also sold 550 quintals of black gram, 1,600 quintals of soybean including DSB 21 and DSB 34 varieties, and 35 quintals of onion," he explained. Regarding the lesser quantity of onion seeds, he said these seeds are very sensitive in nature and can't be conserved for longer or consumed like green gram and black gram. He also mentioned that the UASD is providing certified seeds to companies as per the recommendation of the department of agriculture and cooperation (DAC). "If more quantity of seeds is left with us, we supply to companies after DAC's indent is fulfilled. " Dr PL Patil, vice-chancellor, said the UASD, which developed over 300 new seed varieties in the past five decades, saw a 15% increase in seed production this year and continues to export to other Indian states and countries. Unique Dharwad model is the secret The university adopted the seed village concept, which is a unique seed system in the entire country, in the name of 'Participatory Seed Production Programme,' involving farmers, in 2005-06. The UASD has about 1,500 registered seed growers (farmers) involved in seed-oriented cultivation in Dharwad, Gadag, Bagalkot, Belagavi, Uttara Kannada, and other districts. The varsity provides breeder and foundation seeds to them and trains them on the procedure of cultivating seeds. Varsity experts also pay field visits and monitor the process. Growers get an additional price of 20% compared to the market price for their produce. Additionally, Union and state govts provide incentives to such farmers. Benefitted by these incentives, farmers are voluntarily involved in this seed production. This system is recognised as the 'Dharwad model' among all agriculture universities in the country.

New washer standards in works by BIS for root and tuber vegetables to boost export hygiene

New Delhi: The Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) is set to introduce new standards for washers used to clean root and tuber vegetables, which have a diverse demand across the country as well as globally, two people directly involved in the process said. These machines are crucial for food processing units and major exporters handling produce such as carrots, radish, beetroot, cassava and potatoes, among others. The upcoming standards aim to modernize the way these crops that are pulled from underground and often carry a heavy load of soil and contaminants are cleaned before they reach domestic and international markets. This comes in the backdrop of India pushing to diversify its agricultural and horticultural exports. 'BIS will mandate the use of food-grade, non-corrosive materials such as stainless steel for all parts that come into contact with the vegetables," said the first among the two people mentioned above. Also read: Cooking oil packs may be changed to cut shifty traders to size Also, washing efficiency is key to effectively remove soil and debris while ensuring the vegetables suffer minimal bruising, cuts or cracks, this person said. The new BIS standard includes clear test methods to check how well the machines wash, how much they can handle and how safe they are. Only machines that meet these standards will get certified, giving buyers more confidence and helping Indian exporters meet global food safety rules and cut down rejection at ports. Developed economies, including the US, Germany and the Netherlands, already rely on washers made entirely from stainless steel or food-grade polymers, minimizing corrosion and microbial risks. In line with BIS standards 'The move will mandate all such manufacturers to produce the machines in line with BIS standards and obtain certification to ensure better quality. Currently, the ISI mark is not mandatory for these machines, as there were no standards governing their design or performance until now," said the second person. Fresh potato exports continued to play a significant role in India's agricultural trade in calendar year 2024. The country exported 513,537 tonnes of fresh potatoes, registering a slight decline of 0.6% in volume from the previous year. However, the value of these exports surged to a record $110 million in 2024 from $94.5 million in 2023, registering an increase of 16.4%. This rise in value reflects a higher average export price, which grew by 17.1% year-on-year to around $214 per tonne. The major export destinations for potatoes are he UAE, Malaysia, Sri Lanka, Nepal and Bangladesh. 'At present, machines used to wash such fruits and vegetables are available in the domestic market for around ₹3-4 lakh, while advanced models are priced at about ₹5 lakh," a senior executive of a manufacturing firm told Mint requesting anonymity. With the new standards set to come into effect, the prices of these machines may rise by 10% to 15%, this executive said. 'In this segment, most of the players are MSMEs. These standards may put economic pressure on these manufacturers, but they are essential for keeping the industry on par with global players," said Vinod Kumar Abhash Kumar, trade expert and assistant professor, economics, Delhi University. 'As India moves ahead with free trade agreements with major developed economies such as the UK, US, and EU, aligning our manufacturing practices with international benchmarks will only strengthen our export competitiveness," Kumar said. According to the IMARC Group, India's vegetable washer equipment market was valued at $292.82 million in 2023 and is projected to reach $1.1 billion by 2033. Growth is being driven by increased health awareness, stricter food safety regulations and greater adoption of automated and smart washing solutions by both large and mid-sized processors. Better washing machines will create better export market opportunities for Indian fruits and vegetables. India's agricultural exports to the US were worth $2.53 billion in FY25, led by spices, cereal preparations, rice, fruit, vegetables, meat, dairy and poultry products.
