
Thales Alenia Space to lead ESAs SaveCrops4EU project
SaveCrops4EU digital twin component will be structured around three major scientific pillars.
Thales Alenia Space has signed a contract with the European Space Agency (ESA) to spearhead the SaveCrops4EU project, a key initiative under ESAs Digital Twin Earth programme. This pre-operational digital twin-component is designed to strengthen agricultures resilience to climate change and optimise resource management.
The SaveCrops4EU digital twin-component is built around three core scientific pillars. It utilises advanced satellite data and agronomic indicators for real-time crop monitoring, integrates Earth observation data with crop growth models to improve yield forecasting, and employs scenario testing to assess the impact of abiotic stresses such as drought and heat, along with management strategies like irrigation and fertilisation.
As the lead organisation, Thales Alenia Space will oversee the integration and architectural design of the digital twin, ensuring seamless incorporation of scientific models with Earth observation data. The modular framework of the system allows for broad applicability, supporting diverse agricultural use cases across different regions.
SaveCrops4EU aligns with Europes broader efforts to develop digital twins of Earth, including ESAs Digital Twin Earth (DTE) and the European Commission-funded Destination Earth (DestinE). These initiatives aim to create a comprehensive digital model of the planet to monitor environmental changes, anticipate extreme weather events and guide sustainable climate policies. The synergy between DTE and DestinE ensures that pre-operational digital twins, such as SaveCrops4EU, can transition into fully operational systems, maximising their impact.
To validate its effectiveness, SaveCrops4EU will be tested in four key locationsBelgium, Germany, Hungary and Spain. These real-world trials will evaluate the accuracy of the models, their ability to predict climate-related stress on agriculture, and their usefulness for decision-making in the agricultural sector. The project is also designed for interoperability with other digital twin components and will support future scalability by enabling the integration of additional models and crop types. By the end of 2026, it aims to deliver a pre-operational solution that fosters economically and environmentally sustainable farming in Europe.

To lead the SaveCrops4EU project, Thales Alenia Space has formed a European consortium, with each partner contributing specialized expertise in complementary fields. The consortium brings together the Luxembourg Institute of Science and Technology, the scientific lead, and the University of Valencia as remote sensing experts. It also includes Forschungszentrum Jülich, specialists in bioscience and geoscience simulation, the Walloon Agricultural Research Center, and CropOM, experts in agriculture.

Solar Orbiter spacecraft obtains first images of the sun's poles
11 June 2025 18:13 (REUTERS)The robotic Solar Orbiter spacecraft has obtained the first images ever taken of our sun's two poles as scientists seek a deeper understanding of Earth's host star, including its magnetic field, its 11-year cycle of activity and the solar European Space Agency on Wednesday released images taken in March using three of Solar Orbiter's onboard instruments. They show the sun's south pole from a distance of roughly 40 million miles (65 million km), obtained at a period of maximum solar activity. Images of the north pole are still being transmitted by the spacecraft back to Orbiter, developed by ESA in collaboration with the U.S. space agency NASA, was launched in 2020 from now, all the views of the sun have come from the same vantage point - looking face-on toward its equator from the plane on which Earth and most of the solar system's other planets orbit, called the ecliptic Orbiter used a slingshot flyby around Venus in February to get out of this plane to view the sun from up to 17 degrees below the solar equator. Future slingshot flybys will provide an even better view, at beyond 30 degrees."The best is still to come. What we have seen is just a first quick peek," said solar physicist Sami Solanki of the Max Planck Institute for Solar System Research in Germany, who heads the scientific team for the spacecraft's Polarimetric and Helioseismic Imager instrument."The spacecraft observed both poles, first the south pole, then the north pole," Solanki said. "The north pole's data will arrive in the coming weeks or months."Solar Orbiter is gathering data on phenomena including the sun's magnetic field, its activity cycle, and the solar wind, a relentless high-speed flow of charged particles emanating from the sun's outermost atmospheric layer that fills interplanetary space."We are not sure what we will find, and it is likely we will see things that we didn't know about before," said solar physicist Hamish Reid of University College London's Mullard Space Science Laboratory, UK co-principal investigator of Solar Orbiter's Extreme Ultraviolet Imager sun is a ball of hot electrically charged gas that, as it moves, generates a powerful magnetic field, which flips from south to north and back again every 11 years in what is called the solar magnetic field drives the formation of sunspots, cooler regions on the solar surface that appear as dark blotches. At the cycle's beginning, the sun has fewer sunspots. Their number increases as the cycle progresses, before starting all over again."What we have been missing to really understand this (solar cycle) is what is actually happening at the top and bottom of the sun," Reid sun's diameter is about 865,000 miles (1.4 million km), more than 100 times wider than Earth."Whilst the Earth has a clear north and south pole, the Solar Orbiter measurements show both north and south polarity magnetic fields are currently present at the south pole of the sun. This happens during the maximum in activity of the solar cycle, when the sun's magnetic field is about to flip. In the coming years, the sun will reach solar minimum, and we expect to see a more orderly magnetic field around the poles of the sun," Reid said."We see in the images and movies of the polar regions that the sun's magnetic field is chaotic at the poles at the (current) phase of the solar cycle - high solar activity, cycle maximum," Solanki sun is located about 93 million miles (149 million km) from our planet."The data that Solar Orbiter obtains during the coming years will help modelers in predicting the solar cycle. This is important for us on Earth because the sun's activity causes solar flares and coronal mass ejections which can result in radio communication blackouts, destabilise our power grids, but also drive the sensational auroras," Reid said."Solar Orbiter's new vantage point out of the ecliptic will also allow us to get a better picture of how the solar wind expands to form the heliosphere, a vast bubble around the sun and its planets," Reid added.A previous spacecraft, Ulysses, flew over the solar poles in the 1990s. "Ulysses, however, was blind in the sense that it did not carry any optical instruments - telescopes or cameras - and hence could only sense the solar wind passing the spacecraft directly, but could not image the sun," Solanki said.

Adopting sustainable farming practices to strengthen the beef sector in Botswana
The Nata-Gweta Block Beef Producers have been urged to invest in compliance, certification, and quality assurance frameworks that meet both regional and international standards. This would enable them to take advantage of the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA), which presents significant opportunities for Botswana's beef sector and the livelihoods it supports. Officiating at the Nata-Gweta Block Beef Producers Association (NGBBPA) Farmer Field Day in Zoroga Village on Saturday, 24 May, FAO Representative in Botswana, Carla Mucavi, emphasized the importance of preparing local farmers to meet these standards and fully benefit from a market of over 1.3 billion potential consumers. Mucavi noted that although agriculture currently contributes less than 2% to Botswana's GDP, it sustains over 80% of rural households and remains one of the nation's most culturally and economically significant sectors. 'The beef industry is not just about commerce; it is a symbol of national pride and rural resilience,' she said. She commended the NGBBPA for uniting communal and ranch-based farmers into a strategic alliance that advocates for improved market access, enhanced animal health services, sustainable rangeland management, and the revitalization of Botswana's cattle industry. Importantly, Mucavi challenged prevailing narratives about rural vulnerability. 'Farmers must not be viewed merely as victims of climate change, but as proactive agents of transformation,' she said. 'FAO remains steadfast in supporting Botswana's transition to climate-smart agriculture, strengthening early warning systems, and promoting sustainable land and water management.' She highlighted the worsening impacts of climate change in Botswana, including prolonged and more frequent droughts, erratic rainfall, and rising temperatures, all of which contribute to declining soil fertility, reduced water availability, and increased risks of crop failure and livestock losses. Beyond the climate conversation, Mucavi highlighted the urgent need to rebrand agriculture as an engine of youth empowerment and women's inclusion. 'Agriculture must be repositioned as a pathway to entrepreneurship and wealth creation, not a sector of last resort,' she asserted. She further added that young people and women bring digital skills, creativity, and bold thinking, appealing to stakeholders to create platforms, mentorship, access to land, finance, and training to help them realize their full potential. NGBBPA Chairperson Gosata Mosweu echoed her sentiments, sharing that the association had recently secured an 18-hectare farm to establish a livestock feed production and packaging facility as part of a broader value addition initiative. This, he noted, would reduce dependency on external feed sources and enhance local production capacity. The association is working closely with the Ministry of Lands and Agriculture and the Botswana University of Agriculture and Natural Resources (BUAN) to acquire skills in fodder production and innovative agricultural techniques. 'We are also building strong networks with crop producers in the region and commercial farmers in Pandamatenga to source raw materials,' said Mosweu. 'We welcome FAO's continued support as we strive to build resilience and sustainability within our block.' Representing the Ministry of Lands and Agriculture, Obert Mabuta, the District Agricultural Coordinator for the Tutume District, emphasized the importance of selective breeding for climate adaptation and productivity. He urged farmers to focus on livestock breeds that yield higher returns and can withstand the region's harsh conditions. He also stressed the need for sustainable pastoral practices. 'Yes, the rains have been good this year,' he said, 'but they also bring other challenges such as increased wildlife movement. We must remain vigilant develop firebreaks, raise community awareness, and prioritize environmental protection to safeguard food security.' Mabuta applauded the association for organizing networking platforms where farmers share knowledge and gain practical skills. 'These sessions are invaluable in building capacity and confidence among producers,' he concluded. The Nata-Gweta Block Beef Producers Association (NGBBPA), established in 2007, hosts its annual Farmer Field Day in Zoroga Village, Tutume District. The event brings together both communal and ranch-based farmers to promote improved market access, enhanced animal health services, sustainable rangeland management, and the revitalization of Botswana's cattle industry.
