Brad Fitter withdraws interest in coaching Kangaroos, leaving Cameron Smith as front-runner to replace Mal Meninga
Brad Fittler has withdrawn from the race to take over as Kangaroos coach, after opting to focus on his television commitments.
Fittler has told the ARL Commission he is no longer eyeing off the Australian Test job, after having been the initial favourite to replace Mal Meninga.
"There was an opportunity there, I'm very grateful for them thinking about me, but I think just in the situation I'm in at the moment, my commitments to Channel 9, I work for the NRL, I'm really enjoying that," Fittler told 2GB about his decision.
"When the role came about and I just started to think about it and start planning that this is maybe for someone else at the moment.
"It was an incredible opportunity, but I also didn't think I could do it justice. That's why I didn't want to commit to it.
"But what an incredible opportunity for someone. I think it's someone with a bit of time. They need to get hotels, grounds, training fields, equipment, everything — it's a big job ahead, but what an awesome experience it is going to be, three Tests over in England."
The former NSW mentor's decision leaves Cameron Smith as the front-runner for the role, having also emerged as a genuine contender.
Smith only retired from representative football eight years ago, but has coaching experience as Billy Slater's Queensland assistant in 2022 and 2023.
Kevin Walters is also considered an option, after briefly meeting with the NRL as they searched for the Perth Bears' first coach.
Walters is keen to get back into the coaching game, after being sacked by the Broncos at the end of last season.
Meninga was forced to end his nine-year tenure at the helm of the Kangaroos in early June, after taking on the head coach job at the Bears.
Appointing a new Kangaroos coach is a top priority for the ARLC, with an end-of-season Ashes tour of England looming.
A full-time Jillaroos coach must also be appointed, after Brad Donald's exit earlier this year.
His former assistant Jess Skinner took over on an interim basis for Australia's Test against England in Las Vegas in March, which the Jillaroos won 90-4.

'We're in quite a good position already having that guaranteed spot but she's back in now and she did super well in her spell,' Emma-Lee Browne said. 'She went out a very happy horse and they always do well when they go out happy.' Browne said Basilinna was likely to take the proven weight-for-age path to the $8m event but that would entail racing over shorter distances early in her campaign. She said the camp had not picked a first-up assignment for the rising five-year-old but the aim was to keep Basilinna happy during the long preparation. 'Last prep, she thrived through the whole thing so hopefully that will repeat it,' Browne said. 'We'll probably start her off a bit shorter this time. 'We started her off straight up at 2000m last time in but we'll start her in shorter races, just trying to keep her happy and hitting the line. 'They will probably be a bit short for her but she's probably at that level now where weight-for-age races will probably provide the path.' However, the Brownes have no control over their biggest wish for Melbourne Cup Day. 'The wet track really helped her as she does seem to find another gear on those wet tracks,' she said. 'We'll be hoping it rains in November.'

‘We can't ask you': Opposition questions Tourism's involvement in $60m NRL deal as Minister deflects topic
Tourism Minister Reece Whitby has refused to answer questions about the $60 million deal to base the NRL's next team in Perth, sparking Opposition claims tourism officials were cut out of it. Basil Zempilas used a Budget estimates hearing in Parliament on Tuesday to press the Minister on whether Tourism WA did its own cost-benefit analysis, but was told to ask Sport and Recreation Minister Rita Saffioti instead. 'Got an army of advisors from tourism (with you) and we can't ask you,' the Opposition Leader exclaimed. Three times, he was told to wait to ask Ms Saffioti. 'I'm happy to ask questions that relate to the tourism division and items that are directly related to a line item of the Budget,' Mr Whitby said. 'The process and the decision making around this issue sit very firmly in the sporting division.' The Perth Bears deal will cost $50.8 million in its first year, even before the team hits the field in the 2027 season. Asked whether Tourism WA provided a formal briefing before the deal was signed, Mr Whitby again deferred. 'I've got to take issue with you . . . I think you're drawing a pretty tenuous link,' Mr Whitby said. Ms Saffioti is due to front Budget estimates on Tuesday afternoon.

West Coast veteran Dom Sheed will forever be remembered for his 2018 grand final goal after announcing his retirement
West Coast veteran Dom Sheed, the man who broke the hearts of millions of Collingwood supporters in the 2018 AFL grand final, has announced his retirement. Sheed had nearly 2000 kicks across his 165 game career, but none more important than his last-gasp goal at the MCG which propelled the Eagles to a stunning five-point victory. His goal from the boundary, which put the Eagles in front having trailed by two points when he took the kick, was one of 32 disposals in arguably the best game of a career which stalled in recent seasons due to injuries. 'It has been an absolute privilege to represent the West Coast Eagles, and I will be forever grateful for the opportunity this great footy club gave a skinny kid from Kalgoorlie,' Sheed said. 'To play for the Club I grew up supporting has been a dream come true, but the relationships you build and memories you share from footy are what I will cherish most from my time in the game. 'There are so many people I would like to thank for helping me along the journey, first and foremost my amazing family. 'It hasn't always been easy. There's been plenty of ups and downs, and to finish up without being able to play alongside the boys this year due to injury has been tough. 'But my family have been there for me every step of the way, and I can't thank my parents and my wife Brooke enough. It leaves Liam Ryan, who delivered the ball to Sheed, as the only player who was part of that play still active on the Eagles' list. Sheed was taken at pick 11 in that year's draft and made his AFL debut as a sub in round one 2014.
