Six-Team Formats Set For Cricket At Los Angeles Olympics, But Unknowns Remain

In an announcement that was widely flagged, but will still disappoint some, cricket will feature six teams each in the men's and women's T20 competitions at the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics.
While other key details remain unknown, such as the qualifying system and venues, it does start to build momentum behind cricket's Olympic return after a 128-year absence from its sole appearance in 1900.
Eyebrows had been raised among administrators when it was mooted that cricket, deemed by some metrics as the world's second most popular sport, would get such a small allocation of teams.
It is considerably lower than rival global sports soccer, which will boast 16 women's teams and 12 men's teams in Los Angeles, and the 24 combined teams for basketball. 3x3, a truncated version of basketball, also will have 12 men's and 12 women's teams.
A total of 90 athlete quotas have been allocated for each gender in cricket, which means every team can name a 15-member squad. The small number of teams is due to a strict quota of athletes and keeping in line with the International Olympic Council's efforts in keeping costs down.
There are 12 Full Member cricket nations - who have status in five-day Test cricket and are granted more funding and power in cricket's tiered membership. It means some of cricket's best and most iconic nations will miss out on Olympic spots.
Cricket also boasts considerably more depth at the T20 level - a fast and furious game lasting around three hours - with 20 teams contesting last year's men's T20 World Cup, where notably rising cricket nation U.S. upset Pakistan in Dallas.

The U.S. as host nation are likely to get an automatic slot although possibly in just one gender.
There is still a lot to be sorted out. A qualification format has yet to be officially locked in, but it's been mooted that Olympic spots would be allocated to the top six in the International Cricket Council's men's and women's T20 rankings at a cut-off date.
That has angered some administrators. Zimbabwe Cricket chair Tavengwa Mukuhlani, who has been part of the ICC's Olympic working group since late 2020, believes T20 qualification tournaments - not rankings - should determine which countries make the cut for Los Angeles.
"If you look at the other major sports, the qualifying tournaments are so exciting and adds so much drama," he told me last year. "It's fairer, with every country having to fight for their place in the Olympics."
Venues have yet to be determined, with the cricket competitions possibly extending beyond Los Angeles.
The iconic Oakland Coliseum, the former long-time home of the Athletics and Raiders, is in the mix and will host nine Major League Cricket matches in June as the new home of San Francisco Unicorns, a franchise backed by Silicon Valley venture capitalists.

MLC's future at the Coliseum is unknown - it is currently a one-season arrangement - but hopes are high that it can be extended long-term and perhaps even be used as an Olympic venue.
"I certainly hope the Coliseum could be an Olympic venue," Unicorns co-owner Anand Rajaraman told me. "It is the best stadium in America for cricket. A lot of it depends on what the Olympic Committee want to do, but from a cricket point of view it is the best option."
As I reported previously, Seattle is also vying to be in the mix although have not yet developed cricket infrastructure. The east coast is a possibility too due to a more favorable time difference with the lucrative Indian market.
New York did stage eight T20 World Cup matches in June at its $30 million modular stadium in Long Island. The cricket ground was torn down immediately after the tournament, but billionaire Mukesh Ambani, the owner of MI New York in the MLC, reportedly has plans to build a world-class facility in the famous city.
Expansion is set for MLC with two teams to be added to the six-side tournament in 2027. Philadelphia, Atlanta and Chicago are on the shortlist with infrastructure a key staple and the successful cities could also be in the running to host Olympic matches.
The U.S national teams are expected to host numerous international nations during the home 2028 season ahead of the Olympics.

Manchester City left this key player out of the squad for the Club World Cup

As the club World Cup is approaching, the clubs are busy in making the squads that will help them go as higher as possible in the league. By Ravi Kumar Jha Published on June 12, 2025, 08:35 IST As the club World Cup is approaching, the clubs are busy in making the squads that will help them go as higher as possible in the league. Manchester City also made their squad and left out the star Jack Grealish from it. The midfielder and the club is set to part ways this summer transfer window. Both the parties are convinced that new place will be a better thing to explore himself. As the FIFA Club World Cup draws closer, clubs across the globe are finalizing their squads in hopes of achieving glory on the world stage. Premier League giants Manchester City have submitted their squad for the tournament — but one notable name is missing: Jack Grealish. The English midfielder has been left out of the Club World Cup squad, signaling the growing certainty of his departure from the Etihad this summer. Sources close to the club suggest that both Grealish and Manchester City have mutually agreed that a fresh start could be beneficial for the player. After joining City in 2021 for a British-record fee, Grealish showed flashes of brilliance but struggled to cement a regular starting spot under Pep Guardiola. Injuries and competition for places limited his impact, and now, the 28-year-old appears ready to explore new opportunities. Philadelphia Union players, World Cup host committee host clinic for young soccer players

As anticipation builds for World Cup in Philadelphia, Union players inspire young athletes at clinic As anticipation builds for World Cup in Philadelphia, Union players inspire young athletes at clinic As anticipation builds for World Cup in Philadelphia, Union players inspire young athletes at clinic It's been more than a decade since Philadelphia Union captain Alejandro Bedoya played in the World Cup in Brazil, but he'll never forget the feeling of that moment. "You really felt the magnitude of what a World Cup is," Bedoya, a midfielder, said. "People from all over the world are tuning in to watch this game, it was incredible." In less than 365 days, that unmatched excitement comes to the City of Brotherly Love. But first, the FIFA Club World Cup takes the field next week with eight matches at Lincoln Financial Field. To kick things off, the host committee hosted a youth soccer clinic for Big Brothers Big Sisters, giving Philly's future stars a chance to train with the pros. Bedoya and defender Neil Pierre led drills and even drafted a new teammate, 9-year-old Drew Johnson. "I'm going to pick Drew as my first pick, always … Whatever team he's on, I support," Pierre said. "It feels amazing just to know I got backup ... I'm just happy to be here," Johnson said. The drills are awesome, but the real score is that all of these kids will be entered into a drawing, and one lucky soccer player will win tickets to a match to see their favorite team this summer. "We have an opportunity to bring soccer to some of our youngest fans and passionate players, and we're excited to do that," Meg Kane, host city executive, said. Ibrahima Bah and Wassim Bouchenafa, both 16 and from Philly, have been playing since they could lace up cleats. Now, for the first time in their lifetime, the world's biggest tournament will be played in the U.S. and their hometown. "It's not really the main sport in the USA. But after the World Cup that's coming up, I think that's going to change," Bouchenafa said. "It'll put a light on it, and the younger kids will be like, hey, this does sell out football stadiums," Pierre said.

📸 Party time in Mexico, countdown to the World Cup begins

The best football year is about to arrive! The 2026 World Cup is just 365 days away from its opening phase, and Mexico did not let the occasion pass by, as it will become the only country to host three World Cups. This Wednesday, Clara Brugada, Head of Government of Mexico City, and Alessandro del Piero, former footballer, unveiled the countdown clock for the start of the World Cup. Advertisement Likewise, Samuel García, governor of Nuevo León, did the same in Monterrey, and Amaury Vergara, owner of Chivas, led the event in Guadalajara. Each of the 16 World Cup host cities will have one of these clocks, and they will be distinguished by the color of each host: green for Mexico, blue for the United States, and red for Canada. We are one year away from the start of a historic event, as this will be the first World Cup with 48 participating countries. For now, 13 teams have already qualified.
