Investigators narrow search for ex-soldier wanted in deaths of 3 young daughters in Washington state
LEAVENWORTH, Wash. (AP) — Authorities in Washington state are focusing their search for an ex-soldier wanted in the deaths of his three young daughters in an area south of where their bodies were discovered more than a week ago.
The Chelan County Sheriff's Office issued an alert Monday night for an area near Ingalls Creek and the Valleyhi community, a small neighborhood about 10 miles (16 kilometers) south of Leavenworth. The alert remained in effect Tuesday.
Authorities did not specify what prompted them to focus on that area, beyond saying 'he is believed to potentially be in this area.'
'Residents and visitors are urged to secure homes and vehicles, remain vigilant, and report any suspicious activity to 911,' the alert said. 'A heightened law enforcement presence will persist as a precautionary measure.'
Investigators have been looking for Travis Caleb Decker, 32, since the night of May 30, when he failed to return the girls to their mother's home in Wenatchee, about 100 miles (160 kilometers) east of Seattle, after a scheduled visit.
Three days later, a sheriff's deputy discovered the bodies of 9-year-old Paityn Decker, 8-year-old Evelyn Decker and 5-year-old Olivia Decker down an embankment at the Rock Island Campground west of Leavenworth.
The site is about 11 miles (18 kilometers) from the Pacific Crest Trail, which runs from the U.S.-Mexico border to the U.S.-Canada border, and it is connected to the newly focused search area by backcountry trails.
Decker was an infantryman in the U.S. Army from March 2013 to July 2021 and deployed to Afghanistan for four months in 2014. He has training in navigation, survival and other skills, authorities said. He once spent more than two months living in the backwoods off the grid.
Officials have searched hundreds of square miles, much of it mountainous and remote, by land, water and air.
Last September, his ex-wife, Whitney Decker, wrote in a petition to modify their parenting plan that his mental health issues had worsened and that he had become increasingly unstable, often living out of his truck. She sought to restrict him from having overnight visits with the girls until he found housing.
An autopsy on Friday determined the cause of death to be suffocation, the sheriff's office said. The girls had been bound with zip ties and had plastic bags placed over their heads.

Chaos erupts as ICE protesters prompt state of emergency in Spokane, Washington
Spokane, Washington has now been declared a state of emergency after protesters failed to cooperate with Mayor Lisa Brown's curfew that began at 9:30 p.m. Wednesday until 5 a.m. Brown issued the curfew amid ICE protests downtown from Boone Ave to Spokane Falls Blvd and Howard St to Division St, as well as Riverfront Park. The protests began after former Spokane City Councilman Ben Stuckart issued a call to action asking for support for the detainment of a Venezuelan man seeking asylum. "ACTION ALERT: Three weeks ago I became the legal guardian to a young man from Venezuela seeking asylum. He has turned in all paperwork and has a future court hearing. I went with him to ICE check in today. They detained him and are shipping him to Tacoma," his post read. "I am asking that if you care at all about these illegal detainers you meet me at 411 West Cataldo by 2pm. I am going to sit in front of the bus. Feel free to join me…….The Latino community needs the rest of our community now. Not tonight, not Saturday but right now!!!!" Stuckart became the legal guardian of the 21-year-old Venezuelan man 3 weeks ago. Spokane Police Department and the county sheriff's office are currently on the scene and are also calling the gathering unlawful. Spokane County Commissioner Josh Kerns issued a statement referencing the two active riots in the City of Spokane. "The unrest we have seen in the City of Spokane is unacceptable," said Commissioner Kerns. "I stand with the dedicated men and women of law enforcement who put themselves in harm's way to protect lives, businesses, and public safety." He continued, "Thank you to our police officers, deputies, and their families tonight. We support you and have your back". Commissioner Kerns also stated, "I strongly support every American's First Amendment right to speak freely and protest peacefully—but that right does not include violence, obstruction of law enforcement, destruction of property, or putting others at risk. We must uphold both our freedoms and our responsibility to exercise them lawfully." Brown also released a statement on the gathering. "I am aware of the situation unfolding outside of the Federal Immigration and Customs Enforcement office in Spokane. The City of Spokane respects and upholds everyone's First Amendment rights and right to be on public property. "The City of Spokane continues to uphold the Keep Washington Working Act. The Spokane Police Department will address violations of Spokane Municipal Code. "I encourage everyone to remain peaceful and safe, and my heart goes out to families being separated. Our unity is stronger than any attempt to divide us." Several protesters have been taken into custody on "failure to disperse" charge and SPD has deployed tear gas on the crowd.

Mattawa man drowns in irrigation canal
Jun. 11—MATTAWA — The body of a Mattawa man was discovered late Tuesday after he apparently drowned in an irrigation canal. The unidentified man, 30 years of age, was found in a canal near Road M Southwest and Road 24 Southwest, about 7 miles west of Mattawa, according to a release from the Grant County Sheriff's Office. Kyle Foreman, GCSO public information officer, said the man may have been working at the edge of the canal bank. His ATV was found on the canal road, still idling. The man was out on the job; his coworkers became concerned when he didn't return by about 2 p.m. Foreman said there was evidence he somehow ended up in the canal. "Maybe he slid or was on something that slid into the canal," Foreman said. An irrigation canal can look unthreatening, but it's a good idea to take precautions around them. "It can be misleading," he said. Depending on the demand for water, the current can be very swift, and the water is cold most of the irrigation season. Once someone ends up in a canal, it can be tough to get out because the banks are steep and can be slippery. In fact, it's a good idea to stay away from the bank altogether. "You can't take it for granted that the soil on the edges is stable enough to not cause you to fall in," Foreman said. Children should not be allowed to play along the canal bank, and pets should be kept away too, he said.
