Australian mushroom murder suspect not on trial for lying: defence
An Australian woman accused of killing three lunch guests with deadly mushrooms should not be judged guilty just because she lied after the meal, her defence lawyer said Wednesday.
Erin Patterson, 50, is charged with murdering her estranged husband's parents and aunt in July 2023 by spiking their beef Wellington lunch with death cap mushrooms.
She is also accused of attempting to murder a fourth guest -- her husband's uncle -- who survived the lunch after a long stay in hospital.
Patterson has steadfastly maintained her innocence during a seven-week-long trial that has made headlines from New York to New Delhi.
As the trial came to its closing stages on Wednesday, defence lawyer Colin Mandy sought to explain Patterson's behaviour in the days following the deadly feast.
Patterson told police investigating the deaths that she did not own a food dehydrator, which was allegedly used to prepare the death cap mushrooms.
Security footage showed Patterson dumping a dehydrator at a nearby rubbish facility, and forensic tests found trace amounts of death cap mushrooms on the appliance.
"No one knows what they would have done in a similar situation," Mandy told the trial.
"She is not on trial for being a liar."
Mandy said there was nothing unusual about Patterson's knowledge of death cap mushrooms.
She developed an interest in foraging for mushrooms during the pandemic lockdown in 2020, Mandy said, teaching herself which varieties were safe to eat.
It made "perfect sense" that Patterson would have become "aware of death cap mushrooms" during this period, Mandy said.
Patterson "loved" mushrooms, he added, because they were healthy and full of flavour.
This interest explained why Patterson visited a website listing locations of death cap mushrooms near where she lived, Mandy said.
Patterson originally invited her estranged husband Simon to join the family lunch at her secluded home in the farming village of Leongatha in Victoria state.
But he turned down the invitation on the eve of the meal, saying he felt uncomfortable going, the court heard earlier.
The pair were long estranged but still legally married.
Simon Patterson's parents Don and Gail, and his aunt Heather Wilkinson, attended the lunch.
All three were dead within days. Heather Wilkinson's husband Ian fell gravely ill but eventually recovered.

Terror as car ploughs into shopping centre
A stolen vehicle has driven through a Melbourne shopping centre as it tried avoid police. Ambulance and police are on the scene at the Northland Shopping Centre on Murray Road, Preston after the terrifying incident at 4pm on Wednesday. A woman named Tanya said she had been locked down in a Kmart on Wednesday afternoon. 'It sounded like gunshots, but it was a car,' she said. 'Some girls (in the store) saw it and they put the gates down straight away.' Tanya told 3AW Drive up to 70 people were barricaded into the store with her. Victoria Police said in a statement they attempted to block in the white LandCruiser, outside the shopping centre. 'The LandCruiser, with one male occupant on board, has taken evasive action to avoid the police and driven through the middle of the shopping centre,' police said in a statement. 'Thankfully, no one was struck by the car and there are no reported injuries.' 9News reported shoppers described 'hearing screams' as the vehicle drove 'at speed' through the shopping centre. The centre was evacuated and all shops were closed. One woman is being treated at the scene for shock, and no injuries have been reported at this stage. The vehicle left the shopping centre and was last seen travelling towards Wood Street, and currently remains outstanding. The incident marks the second time in nearly a month that Northland Shopping Centre has been forced into lockdown. Last month, a brawl involving the use of machetes resulted in the evacuation of the shopping centre and the passing of a sweeping anti-machete ban by the Victorian government. More to come

Netflix star hit with more charges
Celebrity croc wrangler Matt Wright has reportedly been hit with two more criminal charges following the helicopter crash that killed his friend and co-star Chris Wilson. The Outback Wrangler host was set to face trial in the Northern Territory Supreme Court next month charged with one count of attempting to pervert the course of justice. However, the charges are now set to be split into three components, a Director of Public Prosecutions spokesperson confirmed to NewsWire. The Crown filed an amended indictment and Crown case outline that contained three counts of perverting the course of justice, rather than just the one, the DPP said. The trial is set to start on July 28. Mr Wright's co-star Mr Wilson was killed in a helicopter crash while on a crocodile egg collecting expedition in the Northern Territory in February 2022. Pilot Sebastian Robinson was left a paraplegic. At the time of the crash, Mr Wilson was being hung from the helicopter by a sling. He left behind his wife Danielle and their two young sons. His criminal charges relate to his alleged actions after the fatal crash.

Teen's bravery hailed after alleged gang rape ordeal
A teenage girl has been praised for her strength in coming forward to police after allegedly being the victim of a six-hour gang rape by four young males. The youths, aged between 14 and 19, are accused of repeatedly raping the 17-year-old at several locations across southwestern Sydney in December 2024. Parts of the alleged gang rape were recorded on video. Their alleged actions, which came to light as police put the two eldest members of the group before the courts on Wednesday, sparked widespread condemnation. "This is an unimaginable ordeal for this young woman. The allegations are just abhorrent," Premier Chris Minns said. Sex Crimes Squad commander Jayne Doherty said the quartet's ages were concerning. "It beggars belief that, in this day and age, men would think to act this way towards a girl," she said. The two eldest teens, now aged 18 and 19, faced court for the first time on Wednesday after being arrested on Tuesday with help from riot squad officers. Police allege the incident was partially captured on video and shared among the teens. "They had no right to act like this towards a woman," Det Supt Doherty said. The girl was initially approached by a 16-year-old boy, unknown to her, at a shopping centre in Liverpool on a Sunday evening, police said. He followed her to her car and she reluctantly let him inside before he allegedly began sexually assaulting her. The boy asked to be driven to a park at a nearby suburb, which the victim agreed to, on the understanding he would get out of the car, police allege. At the park, two other males got into the car and allegedly also sexually assaulted her. A fourth male arrived in another car and the assaults continued as the girl was driven around for six hours, investigators allege. About 11.30pm, when the men left the alleged victim in her car, she contacted a friend who took her to a police station to report the incident. Detectives arrested a 16-year-old boy days after the rape and charged him with 19 sexual assault offences and five sexual touching offences. The 14-year-old was arrested shortly after in Miller and charged with 10 offences including seven aggravated sexual assault offences. Both were refused bail and appeared at a children's court in December. Six months of investigations led detectives to raid homes in Sadleir and Heckenberg on Tuesday, arresting two other teenagers. Adam Abdul Hamid, 19, was refused bail during a brief court appearance, with his lawyer telling reporters his client maintains his innocence. The 18-year-old, who cannot be identified because he was a juvenile in December, was refused bail ahead of an application on Tuesday. NSW Police footage of their arrests showed agitated family members of the alleged perpetrators shouting and swearing at officers. Det Supt Doherty hailed "the strength of the victim". "She was able to give a very detailed statement over a number of days, which gave us a number of opportunities to gather evidence," she said. "She's very distraught (now) ... fortunately, she's supported by family, who are very strong and supportive of her." Police Minister Yasmin Catley said she was horrified at the allegations and lauded the "tremendous work" of police in making arrests. Western Sydney University criminologist Selda Dagistanli said some young men were being emboldened to perpetrate sexual violence because of a rise in problematic social media content.
