
Hudson's Bay employees sparking interest from Holt Renfrew and other retailers
TORONTO — Big-name department and drug stores are circling the more than 9,300 Hudson's Bay and Saks Fifth Avenue Canada workers who will soon be out of a job.
Luxury retailer Holt Renfrew told The Canadian Press it's added dozens of former Bay and Saks staff to its store teams, 'with more still to come.'
'While our turnover rate is amongst the lowest it's been, we've been committed to helping our HBC and Saks colleagues with any opportunities we can provide,' spokesperson Adam Grachnik said in an email.
Meanwhile, talent acquisition staff at Shoppers Drug Mart and Rexall appear to be working social media channels, hoping to lure in Bay and Saks employees.
Canada's oldest company filed for creditor protection in March, and the company has been winding down. Following months of liquidation sales, all 96 of the Bay and its sister Saks stores will shutter at the end of May.
While some workers will presumably retire or abandon the retail world altogether, experts say others are likely to be scooped up by just about any retailer you can think of.
'Any of the great brands out there that are looking for good people are reaching out to them,' said Lanita Layton, a luxury and retail consultant who was once a vice-president at Holt Renfrew.
She imagines Bay and Saks workers would be a great get for La Maison Simons, which is due to hire hundreds of staff members when it opens two Toronto department stores later this year, but also thinks they could slide right in at home goods shops like Crate and Barrel or Williams Sonoma.
The workers are a fit for so many places because many have worked on commission, so they know how to sell, and they also have a deep knowledge of the Canadian marketplace and the products and customers that fill it.
Some may even have a 'hidden gem' — contact info for regular shoppers they would have served at the Bay's upscale Room business or the designer Saks department.
'Every retailer is looking to maintain and grow their customer base, so if they've got somebody they could potentially hire that has that already, that is really, really important,' Layton said.
Bringing experienced staff onto a new team is also a savings, said Lauren Burrows, a senior manager of retail strategy at Accenture, who imagines luxury businesses, small boutiques and grocers will vie for Bay workers.
She estimates it costs on average between $3,000 to $4,000 to recruit, interview and hire an employee, train them and then cope with their initial, lower productivity while they adjust to the quirks and cadences of the job.
Once they're in the job, retention becomes a key issue because retail roles are known for having higher than usual turnover, she said.
But Layton points out many Bay employees spent decades at the department store and worked in difficult-to-fill roles like visual merchandisers — highlighting trends, customer demographics and brand partnerships at the store.
Another treasure the Bay and Saks had were their beauty departments, which Holt Renfrew admitted it's already poached from.
Layton figured Sephora would do the same because it's been expanding and it's easy to transition workers from one beauty brand to another.
'If they're makeup artists in one, they could be a makeup artist in another without blinking,' Layton said.
'If they're switching from a Tom Ford counter to Lancôme or vice versa, it's just learning the nature of that brand, but that doesn't take anybody long when they're professionals in that area already.'
The leap may also be easy for some staff headed to Canadian Tire. The retailer is on track to purchase the Bay name, its stripes motif, its coat of arms and its brands for $30 million.
While the company did not comment on whether it was seeking Bay hires, Layton figures they'd be logical additions because they know the intricacies of the intellectual property Canadian Tire wants to acquire.
Bay staff would also be experts in product development, logistics, data analysis and inventory management, making them useful throughout the industry.
Because the retail world can be so 'complex' and Bay employees have run a company even in the face of upheaval, Burrows said any business undergoing transformation would want them.
'Having folks who have been through that and can really start day one, hit the ground running and add value right away... is amazing,' she said.

Government watchdog gives Manitoba minister title of ‘worst finance minister in the country': report
Manitoba Finance Minister Adrien Sala has received an overall F grade from the Canadian Taxpayers Federation on provincial spending, debt, debt interest and tax relief. (THE CANADIAN PRESS/John Woods) The Canadian Taxpayers Federation (CTF) has given Manitoba's finance minister the title of 'worst finance minister in the country,' according to a report on provincial government spending. The organization that is 'dedicated to lower taxes, less waste and accountable government' released its 2025 Finance Minister Report Card—ranking ministers based on provincial spending, debt, debt interest, and tax relief. The report compared provincial budgets from last year to this year and took into consideration other provincial fiscal announcements. Manitoba Finance Minister Adrien Sala received the lowest grade according to the report, an overall F, which he shares with Newfoundland and Labrador's Finance Minister Siobhan Coady. The report indicates that Coady also received the title of 'worst finance minister in the country.' Lowest grade for tax relief among provinces: report 'Unfortunately, Manitoba is not performing well financially compared to other finance ministers in the country,' said Gage Haubrich, CTF prairie director. 'Manitoba was one of the only provinces this year to actually hike taxes in its provincial budget, and it did in a sneaky, underhanded way, known as bracket creep,' he said. Haubrich said that Manitoba's government has stopped linking income tax brackets to inflation, which will cost Manitoba taxpayers $82 million this year, per the report. Manitoba received the lowest grade for tax relief among the provinces. 'So that means just by getting a cost-of-living raise, not actually making any more money, you can get bumped up into a higher tax bracket, and that increases your taxes,' said Haubrich. Gage Haubrich Canadian Taxpayers Federation prairie director Gage Haubrich said that the provincial government's decision to stop linking income tax brackets to inflation is 'a very sneaky tax hike.' (Zoom) He said the longer bracket creep sticks around, the more money taxpayers are going to pay from compounding inflation. 'It's a very sneaky tax hike,' Haubrich said. He added the last time Manitoba got rid of bracket creep was in 2017. The report says that the government 'introduced a small cut to the province's payroll tax and an increase to the homeowner's affordability tax credit' but adds that the cuts save taxpayers less than what the bracket creep will cost them. F grade for debt interest payments: report Manitoba also received an F grade for debt interest payments, along with Quebec and Newfoundland and Labrador. The report says that the Manitoba debt interest payment will be $2.3 billion this year, working out to be $1,554 per person, only behind Newfoundland and Labrador at $2,088 per person. The province also received a D grade for a spending increase, listed at approximately 7.1 per cent, and the same grade for debt, which is planned to increase to $1 billion compared to last year's budget, per the report. 'Manitoba is on solid financial footing,' says Sala In an emailed statement from Sala, he said, 'Our plan was recently given an A+ by S&P Global Ratings, which means independent experts believe Manitoba is managing its finances responsibly.' 'This lowers borrowing costs and creates more stability for Manitobans in uncertain times, with a greater capacity to invest in the things that matter, like health care, affordability and public safety.' Sala added that 'Manitoba is on solid financial footing.' The report says that Saskatchewan's finance minister is 'performing the best,' with an overall B+ grade. 'No finance minister in the country earned an A grade for their budget, because all finance ministers are continuing or planning to rack up debt and waste millions of taxpayer dollars on debt interest payments,' says the report.

BC Ferries picks Chinese shipyard to build four new boats coming in 2029

CEO Nicolas Jimenez says BC Ferries won't release the cost of the contract with China Merchants Industry Weihai Shipyards, adding his primary focus was getting the province a good deal. BC Ferries' head of fleet renewal Ed Hooper says no Canadian companies bid on the ships that will carry about 52 per cent more passengers and 24 per cent more vehicles than the ferries they are replacing. Jimenez says 60 per cent of the world's ships are built in China, and BC Ferries did due diligence to make sure it understood the 'technical and delivery and country risks associated with making this decision.' He says there currently no tariffs associated with the import of vessels of this type into Canada and tariff disputes didn't factor into the decision. BC Ferries says it will have its own team of experts on-site at the shipyard throughout construction to provide oversight and quality assurance. City, transit union reach tentative agreement
The city and ETS workers reached a tentative agreement on Monday following months of negotiations. ETS workers are represented by the Amalgamated Transit Union (ATU) Local 569. The ATU will hold a ratification vote with its members in the coming days. The City of Edmonton did not provide further details as the process is still ongoing. 'Both parties are pleased to have reached a tentative agreement that balances the needs of Edmonton transit workers while considering the sustainability of city finances,' said a statement issued by the city Tuesday. The city and the ATU began negotiations on Aug. 14, 2024, and have met for 17 bargaining and mediation sessions since then. The last contract ended on Dec. 30, 2023. The tentative agreement, which needs to be ratified by both parties before coming into effect, will cover a four-year term from Dec. 31, 2023 to Dec. 11, 2027.
