Council controlled by Reform UK meets for first time
Newly elected councillors on a Reform-led council have come together for the first time at the authority's annual meeting.
Most of the 76 councillors attended the meeting at the Guildhall in Northampton to approve the new leader of West Northamptonshire Council, as well as appoint other positions and make committee arrangements.
Reform UK has political control of the council after winning 42 seats in the recent local elections.
Mark Arnull, the new leader of the council said: We will put local politics back in the control of the local people."
The new political make-up of West Northamptonshire Council is 42 Reform councillors, 17 Conservatives, nine Labour, six Liberal Democrats - and two Independent councillors.
The Tories had been in control of the council since the first elections for the authority in 2021, but lost 35 seats and with 17 seats make up the largest opposition group.
Dan Lister, the Conservatives group leader, told the meeting: "We will engage constructively when your initiatives show tangible benefit, but we will oppose any measures that risk fiscal imprudence, undermine essential services or favour short term gain over long term stability."
Labour came third in the election in May after dropping nine seats and holding nine.
Sally Keeble, the group leader, told the meeting Labour would not support the appointment of the leader, adding: "Normally with a party leader comes a party manifesto in this instance it has not been forthcoming.
"We the council members, the electorate and I suspect the officers have not seen the detail of how Reform intends to run West Northamptonshire what its policies are for the services that are so important to the wellbeing of everyone who lives here."
The Liberal Democrats gained two seats - increasing their councillors to six.
Group leader Jonathan Harris reminded councillors of their duty to uphold laws including the Equality Act 2010.
"This duty requires councils to eliminate discrimination, advance equality and foster good relations this is a legal requirement," he said.
"Weaponising difference, demonising diversity and scapegoating the other is deeply destructive and will be called out."
The appointment of Arnull as leader of the council was carried by 39 votes for and 31 abstaining.
"I do have a manifesto in the form of a contract with the people which is available on the Reform UK website," he told the meeting.
He said his party would "put local politics back in control of local people".
"My team will be very visible on the doorstep, we'll bring a new approach to politics that hasn't been seen round this area for a very long time.
"I look forward to delivering a formidable government."

US, China set for second day of trade talks in London
STORY: The U.S. and China are set for a second day of trade talks in London on Tuesday. A Washington team led by Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent is negotiating with a Chinese contingent helmed by Vice Premier He Lifeng. They are meeting at the ornate Lancaster House in the UK capital. Back in the U.S., Donald Trump said there were signs of progress: "We are doing well with China. China is not easy. I think we are doing very well. They are over there now, I'm only getting good reports.' The talks come amid mounting fears over what a trade war means for global growth. Figures out the day before showed Chinese exports to the U.S. slumping by more than a third in May. Besides tariffs, the key issues in London include China's curbs on exports of rare earths. Two more Welsh politicians defect to Nigel Farage's Reform UK
Reform leader Nigel Farage has used a keynote speech in Wales to announced that two more Welsh councillors have defected. Speaking in Port Talbot, he announced independent councillors Andrew Barry and David Hughes, both members of Merthyr Tydfil council, have joined Reform UK. They were welcomed to the stage during a speech that has given his first glimpses of policies ahead of the election. Mr Farage said the party would allow coal mining again in Wales and says its long term plan is to "reopen the Port Talbot steelworks". Cllr Barry, who has had the cabinet brief for finance, says he has seen "waste" in the system during his time. He said: "The people making the decisions on those hundreds of thousands of pounds are unelected members of the council. "I've come over to Reform because there's so much waste where money is being spent, we need to get into procurement to make sure money is being spent correctly". Its only representation in Wales at the moment is with councillors, but a YouGov/Barn Cymru poll which asked people their voting intention for the Welsh Parliament in May put Reform UK in second with 25% of the vote. They were only behind Plaid Cymru who were projected to get 30% of the vote and ahead of Labour's 18%. You can read that here. In an opinion piece for WalesOnline, the party leader has given his first glimpses of policies ahead of the election. Mr Farage has said the party would allow coal mining again in Wales and says its long term plan is to "reopen the Port Talbot steelworks". The steelworks, owned by Tata, have not closed but its remaining blast furnaces were closed in 2024, with work now ongoing to build an electric arc furnace which will recycle previously-used steel. Thousands of jobs are being lost as part of the change. The Indian-owned company said the blast furnaces were at the end of their operational lives and too expensive to replace. The Port Talbot steelworks were, the company said, losing £1m a day before the blast furnaces were turned off. Reform UK say it would "use Welsh Development Grants to support real industry. We'll redirect economic funding from consultants and NGOs to actual factory floors, machinery, and industrial jobs in places like Llanelli, Shotton, and Ebbw Vale". Nigel Farage has also said the party would also set up "regional technical colleges" for people to have a "path into proper trade". The party would also, it says, stop any building being used for asylum seeker accommodation, end funding to the Welsh Refugee Council and scrap the Welsh Government's "Nation of Sanctuary". It also vowed to set up an Elon Musk style department to cut costs. "A Reform UK Senedd will also save hundreds of millions each year by cutting bureaucracy, waste and bad management." "The establishment of Welsh DOGE will help us uncover where there is woke and wasteful spending and we will make sure those funds are redirected to frontline services," Mr Farage pledges.
