Emerging Engineers Expo held at Western New England University
SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (WWLP) – Western New England University held an engineering expo Tuesday morning to showcase what the engineers of the future have to offer.
The Emerging Engineers Expo had everything from wet shoe dryers to medical technology solutions, all made by college students.
Freshmen and seniors presented solutions to a variety of issues we face. Judges from the industry and the university handed out awards for the best projects. Matthew Brennan and his team showed off a new way to transfer fluids in the medical field. The biomedical student described how it felt to be given this platform.
Brennan told 22News, 'There are some really impressive projects here from all the different disciplines, biomed, civil, mechanical. It's impressive to see the future of engineers, especially engineers who come from Western New England. I think everybody here has a lot to be proud of.'
Over 100 projects were displayed this morning, including 35 freshmen and 69 seniors. The director of experiential and entrepreneurial Learning said the event is a culmination of years of solving and creativity.
Brennan's medical device will hopefully be used to help a local anesthesiologist.

Corpse flower to be in bloom at Smith College
NORTHAMPTON, Mass. (WWLP) – It's called the corpse flower, and it's drawing in some attention at a local botanic garden. Right turns temporarily prohibited on Finn Street to King Street in Northampton The foul-smelling flower on the campus of Smith College in Northampton is said to be a sight to behold. This flower is part of the aroid family but is popularly known as the corpse flower, originating from Sumatra, Indonesia. These flowers can reach a height of up to 15 feet. 'Big big guy, so this is the largest free-standing flower in the world, and what we're looking at is the flowering phase of the life cycle of this plant,' said Jimmy Grogan, Conservatory Curator at the Botanic Garden at Smith College. As for the unique name, it comes from the 'rotting flesh' smell once the flower is set to bloom, and flies are its pollinators. Grogan told 22News that it isn't easy to take care of these flowers due to their irregular life cycle. The flower will begin to smell like a corpse as early as next week. Senator Markey announces plans to file amendment on AI regulation
BOSTON (WWLP) – State Senator Ed Markey (D-Mass.) has announced that he intends to file an amendment on AI regulation. Senator Markey said he plans to file an amendment to the Senate reconciliation bill to block Republicans' attempt to prevent states from regulating AI in the next ten years. Senators in both parties have expressed an interest in regulating artificial intelligence. Car dealership aids relief at Baystate Children's Hospital 'Despite the overwhelming opposition to their plan to block states from regulating artificial intelligence for the next decade, Republicans are refusing to back down on this irresponsible and short-sighted provision,' said Senator Markey. Last Tuesday, the senator delivered remarks on the Senate floor opposing the reconciliation bill passed in the House. He also took part in a virtual roundtable last week with advocates to discuss the ban's impact on communities throughout the United States. 'I plan to file an amendment to strip this dangerous provision from Republicans' 'Big Beautiful Bill,'' Markey said. 'Republicans should be prepared to vote on this outrageous policy and explain to their constituents why they are preventing their state leaders from responding to the harms caused by this new and evolving technology.' Holyoke Community College to offer free course in AI essentials
HOLYOKE, Mass. (WWLP) – Holyoke Community College (HCC) is offering a free 12-week training course this summer on artificial intelligence. The program, titled 'AI Essentials,' is being launched in partnership with the non-profit organization CanCode Communities. The class will run on Tuesdays and Thursdays from June 24 to September 11 from 5:45 p.m. to 8:45 p.m. These western Massachusetts cities awarded funding to boost protection against cyberattacks Participants will get the opportunity to learn about the practical applications of AI, such as prompt engineering, tokenization, model structures, ethics, and more. They will also learn to use leveraging tools, including Google AI Studio, n8n, and OpenWebUI, to delve further into how AI models are built and trained for real-world use. 'Along the way, participants will gain valuable professional development experience, enhancing their technical skills and problem-solving abilities,' said Arvard Lingham, HCC Executive Director of Community Education and Corporate Training. The class is free to eligible Massachusetts residents, with tuition assistance available for qualified residents age 18 and older. Limited seats are offered, and laptops and WiFi hotspots for Internet access will be provided for students who require them. This program is being funded by the Western Mass Alliance for Digital Equity.
