Playing for legacy: Building brands through sports in KSA

Campaign ME05-05-2025

Sports have long been an integral part of Saudi Arabia's social and cultural fabric. From neighbourhood streets and schoolyards, where informal matches once fostered a spirit of camaraderie, the country's sporting landscape has evolved into a dynamic, structured ecosystem.
Fuelled by widespread public enthusiasm and a clear national vision for talent and infrastructure development, sports today are no longer a recreational afterthought – they are a central pillar of Vision 2030, uniting communities, shaping identity and signaling a confident path to the future.
In daily life across the Kingdom, sports pulse with meaning. They bring people together, energise public spaces and transform ordinary moments into celebrations of pride. From football and basketball to equestrian sports and racing, athletic experiences spark emotional connections that linger well beyond the final whistle.
Whether through casual neighbourhood games or international tournaments, the rhythm of sports has become deeply embedded in the nation's collective heartbeat.
Naturally, this rise in prominence has transformed the role of sports in marketing. No longer limited to logos and banners, sports have become a cultural catalyst – redefining how people relate to brands, how they express belonging and how lasting impressions are formed.
Building brands through sports
This shift demands a purposeful approach, one that emphasises authenticity, cultural relevance and sustained engagement as cornerstones of meaningful brand impact.
ROSHN Group recognised early on that sports could serve as a powerful bridge between our brand and the communities we serve. This conviction led us to invest not only in events, but in experiences that leave a mark.
From becoming the title partner of the ROSHN Saudi League – the Kingdom's premier football competition – to aligning with milestone moments such as Formula One in Jeddah, LIV Golf tournaments in KAEC and Riyadh, the Riyadh Marathon, coastal rowing events in Jeddah and inclusive sports initiatives supporting athletes with disabilities, our presence has been intentional.
We chose to be visible and engaged in places where passion lives – often before the global spotlight arrived – because we believed in their potential from the start. Today, that belief continues to reward us with long-term relevance and a brand identity rooted in the nation's energy.
Globally, sports have proven to be one of the most powerful platforms for audience engagement. Across markets, brands are turning to sports not just to amplify their visibility, but to shape public perception and inspire emotional loyalty.
In Saudi Arabia, the momentum around sports marketing is accelerating, with organisations increasingly recognising the scale, emotion and cultural significance sports can mobilise.
As spending on sports activations reaches new highs, marketers must approach the space with clarity and conviction. Visibility alone is no longer enough – what matters is how purposefully a brand aligns with audience values, how intuitively it understands the tempo of the sport and how effectively it delivers substance over spectacle.
Entering the sports space without a clear strategy is a fast track to irrelevance. One-off appearances fade quickly in an arena built on consistency, trust and emotional resonance. Every partnership must begin with a forward-looking plan rooted in a deep understanding of the sport, its culture and its audience.
This philosophy is evident in our ongoing partnership with the Saudi League, where our involvement extends far beyond matchdays. Throughout the season, we create tailored experiences designed to strengthen brand affinity, elevate community interaction and contribute to quality of life.
In Saudi Arabia, brand recognition is not taken for granted – it is earned. Audiences look beyond the surface and expect brands to deliver genuine value and purpose. It's no longer about placing a logo at a venue; it's about demonstrating why your presence matters.
During our partnership with LIV Golf, we curated a family-centred experience where children engaged with a custom putting course while parents explored our developments through immersive digital features.
It was the right time to translate brand identity into shared experience. Without meaningful interaction, even the strongest brand can fade into the background.
While global tournaments and star athletes dominate the headlines, long-term impact begins at the grass roots. Brands looking to contribute meaningfully must support the spaces where ambition takes root and talent is nurtured.
ROSHN Group focuses on everyday moments that shape tomorrow. We organise football and volleyball tournaments within our SEDRA community in Riyadh – not for the cameras, but for the people. These events may not make international headlines, but for the youth who participate, they offer recognition, encouragement and a sense of belonging.
As part of this community-driven approach, we also formed internal sports teams representing our major development projects.
These teams, made up of employees from across the company, began their journey on the very fields we've developed in SEDRA.
It's a simple yet powerful expression of how we live our values – from the inside out. This initiative fosters a culture of wellness, teamwork and authentic engagement, creating stronger connections between our people and the communities we serve.
Loyalty is built through presence, not promotion. And in Saudi Arabia's landscape today, sports are no longer moments – they are movements. For brands, sports offers a dynamic arena to earn trust, express relevance and leave a legacy.
ROSHN made the deliberate decision to engage with purpose and consistency. What emerged is a brand shaped not by advertising – but by experience.

Piastri on pole as McLaren lock out front row in Spain

Formula One leader Oscar Piastri seized pole position from teammate and title rival Lando Norris by a hefty margin as dominant McLaren locked out the front row in Spanish Grand Prix qualifying on Saturday. Red Bull's Max Verstappen, last year's winner, qualified third fastest in the same time as Mercedes' George Russell, who will start fourth because the reigning champion finished his lap first. Piastri had set a target time of one minute and 11.836 seconds in the top 10 shootout but Norris went 0.017 quicker thanks to an opportunistic aerodynamic tow, with McLaren still in a league of their own despite stricter front wing flex tests. Norris, winner in Monaco from pole last Sunday to close the gap at the top to three points, managed to improve further to 1:11.755 before Piastri clinched pole with a brilliant final lap of 1:11.546 - 0.209 seconds quicker around the Circuit de Catalunya. The pole was the Australian's fourth in nine races so far this season. "It wasn't the perfect lap but I think around here with the tyres going off so much through the lap it's very tough to do that," said Piastri, who said over the radio that Norris' slipstream was "cheeky". "I'm very happy with all the work we've put in." Norris said he had the pace but made a couple of small mistakes. "Just a couple of little mistakes. Turn One, where you don't want to make a mistake because it harms the tyres for the rest of the lap. A couple of little squiggles there. And Turn Four as well," he explained. "A good result for the team, a nice one-two and an interesting start for tomorrow," added the Briton, who started on pole last year but finished second. Seven-times world champion Lewis Hamilton, winner a record-equalling six times in Spain, qualified fifth for Ferrari and ahead of teammate Charles Leclerc for the second time this season. Mercedes rookie Kimi Antonelli was sixth fastest, with Leclerc seventh after doing only one flying lap because he had run out of tyres. "I think we were one of the only cars to have only four new sets of softs for the whole of qualifying. All the others around us had five new softs," said the Monegasque. "I sacrificed today, I hope it will pay off tomorrow. If it doesn't, it's my fault." Alpine's Pierre Gasly will start eighth and Isack Hadjar ninth for Racing Bulls. McLaren team boss Andrea Stella said the team had not been at all concerned by the flexi-wing saga, which rivals had hoped might slow the defending constructors' champions. "It entertained to have this kind of debate but our simulations said everything was very small. We weren't concerned from this point of view," the Italian told Sky Sports television. Spain's double world champion Fernando Alonso, yet to score a point this season, completed the top 10 for Aston Martin in front of his home crowd. Verstappen's team mate Yuki Tsunoda struggled again and qualified last with Alpine's Argentine rookie Franco Colapinto also on the back row after a problem pulling away from the pit lane exit at the end of the opening phase. Sauber's Brazilian rookie Gabriel Bortoleto did well to qualify 12th.

AI-powered cyber security for the region is a must for smooth digital transformation

The Middle East is undergoing one of the most ambitious digital transformations the world has seen. National strategies such as Saudi Vision 2030, the UAE's Digital Economy Strategy, and Qatar's Smart Nation framework are setting bold targets for a connected, intelligent future. These plans are already reshaping key sectors including energy, transport, healthcare, and manufacturing. Technologies like 5G, AI, and IoT are central to this shift, but their rapid adoption is bringing a critical challenge to the surface. With every new layer of connectivity comes a growing cybersecurity risk. The region now finds itself at a decisive moment: how can it scale digital innovation while ensuring the security and resilience of the networks that support it? Hyperconnectivity brings new levels of risk By the end of the decade, over one billion IoT devices are expected to be deployed across the GCC. While this will unlock new efficiencies and services, it will also multiply the points of vulnerability. Already, 15% of organisations in the region have experienced data breaches costing over $100,000. The threat landscape itself is evolving. Cybercriminals are using AI to generate new malware, automate large-scale attacks, and even create convincing deepfake phishing campaigns. These tactics can easily bypass legacy security systems. Despite this, the region is demonstrating encouraging levels of cloud readiness. Only 24% of regional businesses feel unprepared for cloud-related threats, compared to 34% globally. This reflects a growing understanding of the importance of building resilience into cloud-native systems. But as risks evolve, so must the defenses. Predictive threat detection and real-time response will be key to navigating what comes next. Intelligent networks and cyber resilience To secure the future, Middle Eastern enterprises must embrace networks capable of defending themselves. This means embedding intelligence, automation, and continuous verification directly into the fabric of network infrastructure. AI is already proving its value in 5G security. A strong example is the generative AI assistant within NetGuard Cybersecurity Dome, built on Microsoft Azure OpenAI GPT, which demonstrates how large language models can enhance threat detection and accelerate informed decision-making during cyber incidents. Yet identifying threats is only the first step. True cyber resilience demands more. It requires a shift to Zero Trust models, where every user, device, and application interaction is continuously authenticated to eliminate assumptions of trust. It also calls for automated incident response systems that can take decisive action in real time, dramatically reducing human error and accelerating resolution. Just as importantly, networks must harness real-time analytics to detect and mitigate vulnerabilities before they can be exploited. These intelligent capabilities are no longer theoretical, they are being deployed across the region today. With the right tools in place, telecom operators and enterprises are beginning to move from reactive defense to proactive protection, where threats are anticipated and neutralized before they cause harm. A commitment to secure transformation Governments across the GCC are taking serious steps to strengthen national cybersecurity posture. The UAE's Cybersecurity Strategy is embedding AI into the country's digital infrastructure. Saudi Arabia's National Cybersecurity Authority is developing frameworks for critical infrastructure protection. Qatar is fostering collaboration between public and private sectors to strengthen cloud resilience. Together, these efforts signal that the region is ready not just to adapt to cyber threats, but to lead in shaping global standards. To do so, the next phase of investment must focus on scalable cloud-native security, AI-powered threat detection, and unified threat response platforms. Building a secure hyperconnected future As digital transformation accelerates, Nokia continues to support the region's cybersecurity goals through innovations that are specifically designed for telecom and enterprise environments. Our AI-driven threat detection platforms are significantly reducing the time it takes to identify and neutralise threats. Advanced solutions such as NetGuard Cybersecurity Dome use generative AI to proactively hunt threats, while our endpoint detection tools monitor the telecom infrastructure in real time. Our collaboration with hyperscalers and cloud providers, such as Microsoft, is enabling integrated, real-time threat visibility across multi-cloud and telecom ecosystems. Trust through autonomous security The Middle East's digital ambitions are bold and achievable, but they rest on a single foundational requirement: trust. As digital economies depend on interconnected networks, intelligent, autonomous security is not a luxury. It is essential. At Nokia, security forms the foundation of our Sense, Think, and Act framework. Built into every network layer, from physical infrastructure to cloud-based applications, our solutions shift from reactive defense to proactive protection. Advanced threat detection, robust encryption, and rigorous authentication at each network layer enable secure, autonomous operations. By embedding AI-driven resilience directly into networks, communication service providers can move towards proactive, self-healing systems that are secure by design. For the GCC, this presents an opportunity to lead the way in establishing secure, scalable, and sustainable digital infrastructure.
